What things have you bought that've been highly and enthusiastically recommended by MNers and then turned out to be a bit a lot shit?

I have loads 😩Here's just a selection:

  • Heated airier: Giant monstrosity, flimsy as fuck, no different from a radiator.
  • Wool duvet: No warmer than a feather one, flat, looks shit on the bed, feels austere and not very luxurious.
  • Oddballs pants: Really strange gusset that constantly rides up into my fanny causing repeated yeast infections.
  • Loveall fleece leggings: Went bobbly after two wears and one wash, make my legs look fat, warm-ish but nothing to write home about.
  • Estee Laude double wear foundation: Heavy and claggy.
  • Birkenstocks: Made me look like a matronly Danish exchange student en-route to a mountain yoga retreat. Fortunately, I only tried them on and didn't buy them.
  • Fjallraven Kranken backpack: See above, Danish exchange student energy. Again, tried and did not buy.

What are yours?

Yes to the Lovall leggings, mine have gone in the bin after about 6 wears.... they're horrible quality and bobbled after the 1st wear.

Charlotte Tilbury make up. What an absolute waste of money - Rimmel quality in high end packaging, I bought a complete kit and even my then teenage DD's refused to use it. I swear that there was a bot on here at one stage as time and time again it was recommended. I'm still cross about it!

MarvellousMidgeMaisel · 04/03/2024 20:28

Nail stickers have completely buggered my nails

YogaLite · 04/03/2024 20:29

@Raccaccoonie tricky one on Panda toppers, could be v individual. I was considering it but a friend had bought one and returned it after one night saying it made them boiling hot. But another poster seems to be happy..

So i am now using a spare duvet as a topper instead...

Mookie81 · 04/03/2024 20:33

Vejas are vile. They're such a grubby colour.
They remind me of the skanky trainers in the PE box you used to raid if you forgot your kit!

I don't really go out and buy stuff based on MN recommendations. I'm particularly suspicious of the following: Toast, Uniqlo, airfryers, White Fox, curly girl method. Pretty sure also that marketing content which MN receives money for is placed across the Talk pages by paid posters.

I do a modified curly girl method

First pic is a "good" hair day when I was using frizz ease
Second pic is now

I do think it works but not the full CG method for everyone and it's a lot of trial and error. My hairdresser recommends shampoo, a silicone free conditioner and a gel and that's it

I also do modified curly girl. The directions to look at the Facebook group and start analysing products were just exhausting. And co-washing - just no.

I use sulfate and silicone free shampoo, conditioner and gel. From a brand for curly hair so I didn't have to think too hard.

EndlesslyDistracted · 04/03/2024 21:24

Modified curly girl here too, sulfate/silicone free shampoo and conditioner, a bit of curl cream and gel and wrap tightly in a microfibre turban.

A steam cleaner

A whole thread of people waxing lyrical about the amazing dirt removal
I think it's for people who have quarry tiled floors or whatever not suitable for me cheapo laminate. You can even use it on cupboards they said. I didn't think to wonder why on earth you would want to
It now sits unloved in the utility room cupboard taking up space.

You have to dig it out and it warms up in your hands, lovely stuff!

😀I love coconut oil too!

I bought a steam cleaner to deal with the aftermath of puppy house training on my quarry tiles. It was only afterwards that I read steam cleaning can actually seal in the smell of urine. Hmm

Is she a ghost? She sounds like a ghost.

No definitely real - taught my daughter! 😂

Mytholmroyd · 04/03/2024 22:19

A heated blanket it is! @SoOutingWhoCares

PinkyPinkyPinky · 04/03/2024 23:29

Lulu lemon. The thick, tight polyester leggings made me feel like I was in some kind of punitive “restrainer”.

tbf, I only like cotton leggings though!

PinkyPinkyPinky · 04/03/2024 23:30

Oh I forgot, a weighted blankets. It didn’t help me sleep at all, and just felt a bit weird.

PinkyPinkyPinky · 04/03/2024 23:30

I like this thread!

saraclara · 04/03/2024 23:31

I can't believe that loads of us were posting all upset because our Oodies weren't being delivered on time.

I've worn mine twice, and put away, the size of the bloody thing takes up half my cupboard space.

That's the one thing that I've bought because of this place, and I really don't get what the fuss was about. Incredibly bulky and I couldn't do the simplest of things while wearing it.

See I LOVE my weighted blanket! I do have a condition that often causes muscle pain though and find the weigh and compression eases the pain somewhat so I may be biased!

PinkyPinkyPinky · 04/03/2024 23:43

I have muscle pain too @MrsWidgerysLodger but didn’t find it helpful. However, I know some people do find them helpful and swear by them. They are a bit like marmite (I love love marmite).

I have an AI illness and I find a weighted blanket helps. But the ones for adults are far too heavy. And microfibre. I found a children’s weighted blanket which is much lighter in 100% cotton.

Funny thread.
I've had a heated rack for over 20 years, before I even came onto mn, and it's still going strong, used daily. I fear the later models are more flimsy, but my one is superb.

I still have an unopened pack of zoflora lurking at the back of the cupboard under the kitchen sink I think.

purple5ky · 05/03/2024 01:00

These Sorel out n about trainer boot things 🙈 absolutely the weirdest footwear I have ever bought.
Toe box is weird. High top part makes a crunchy/rustling noise when walking..

I have small feet anyway so most trainers look cute but these things made me look like I had infants shoes on 😂
Sent them back & ordered half size bigger. Same thing, looked stupid. Really baffled me,
Shown my bf he pissed himself laughing, said they are horrible & I'm not wearing them anywhere with him or I'm walking behind him if I do lol. Then he said the 2 stripes looked like fake Adidas then I realised he was right they are horrible. Returned 2nd pair cringing 🤣 waited an age for refunds.

My most expensive let down was a Bugaboo Cameleon, I couldn't believe how flimsy it was and people raved about them. I got it second hand and sold it on so didn't lose too much money on it fortunately.
forgotten about the green. Korean towels! They worked if you soaked in the bath for half an hour before using. But then they shrank to the size of a postage stamp.
I also bought a Babyliss big hair and it was rubbish, just gave me frizz not shiny waves.

I have had some good recommendations from MN. M&S 5 pocket jeggings were amazing back in the day. Superdrug hot cloth cleanser (Liz Earle dupe). Brazilian keratin kits from EBay.

That Milkshake leave in conditioner spray. It is absolute crap.

Same.
A tenner to have hair that looks like I haven't bothered to wash it 😒

Ilovetea33 · 05/03/2024 03:07

Fjällräven is Swedish, not Danish.

BlueMonday1977 · 05/03/2024 08:39

Wait I know.

the mumsnet chicken that apparently lasts a family a whole week.
