Underwhelming Mumsnetter Recommendations

What things have you bought that've been highly and enthusiastically recommended by MNers and then turned out to be a bit a lot shit?

I have loads 😩Here's just a selection:

  • Heated airier: Giant monstrosity, flimsy as fuck, no different from a radiator.
  • Wool duvet: No warmer than a feather one, flat, looks shit on the bed, feels austere and not very luxurious.
  • Oddballs pants: Really strange gusset that constantly rides up into my fanny causing repeated yeast infections.
  • Loveall fleece leggings: Went bobbly after two wears and one wash, make my legs look fat, warm-ish but nothing to write home about.
  • Estee Laude double wear foundation: Heavy and claggy.
  • Birkenstocks: Made me look like a matronly Danish exchange student en-route to a mountain yoga retreat. Fortunately, I only tried them on and didn't buy them.
  • Fjallraven Kranken backpack: See above, Danish exchange student energy. Again, tried and did not buy.

What are yours?

Anything boden - Kids tv presenter attire.
Eufy hoover - high maintenence nuisance that likes to drive near dirt
Fjallraven backpack - agree! hard and uncomfortable, felt like I stole it off a child
Dior glow - 3 times the price of anything similar and wose than them all.
veja trainers - never understood the hype. For years I thought they were a supermarket brand

😂😂I actually thought Veja were an ASDA brand when they first came out. And the bloody price of them. Just why?!

That Milkshake leave in conditioner spray. It is absolute crap.

it's horrible my friend recommended it to me I bet she's a mumsnetter and caved to peer pressure 😃

A steam cleaner. No, condensation does not clean your floors like bleach does.

People bleach their floors? Did not know that was a thing.
Anyway, many years ago I tried a MN ‘tip’ of cleaning limescale from the toilet by pouring a bottle of cheap coke down it. As any idiot could have guessed it did nothing but dye the limescale brown.

Going back a bit but Waitrose Bottom Butter, or whatever it was called. Everyone raved about it and said it gave them glowing skin. Just gave me acne and made me look like I'd washed my face with vaseline.

I fell for the babyliss big hair brush thing and it really damaged my hair.

Me too, I lost a lot of hair using it as it pulled so much!

Willmafrockfit · 04/03/2024 11:09

coconut oil for dry skin, just rock hard

You have to dig it out and it warms up in your hands, lovely stuff!

myphoneisbroken · 04/03/2024 11:13

@friendlyflicka I'll take your breezy manner and raise you a tinkly laugh.

AnnaMagnani · 04/03/2024 11:14

Veja trainers- gave me a bunion.

Zoflora- it smells absolutely vile, what is it even for?

ChristianHornersGlisteningFinger · 04/03/2024 11:14

I’m amused at how long you have continued buying recommended products when so many have turned out to be crap!

What is it they say about “a triumph of hope over experience”? 😀

Or do you also have a separate list of other recommended things that you bought and which did fun out to be great?

Would be interesting to know the fail rate of Mumsnet recommendations vs recommendations from other sources.

I was distinctly underwhelmed by a bloody socktopus.

3luckystars · 04/03/2024 11:15

I bought Zoflora but was unsure how to use it so it is still unopened.

What do you do with it?

Crabble · 04/03/2024 11:17

On a thread about Botox, someone recommended “frownies” as an alternative.

If you have never heard of frownies, they are little squares of kraft paper you stick to your forehead overnight so you can look like a dickhead in front of your husband, field constant questions from young children about why you’ve got paper on your face, and look absolutely no different afterwards.

a mere £8 for the privilege

Same and when I asked The reply was always EVERYTHING. It still sits unopened on a shelf.

cheapskatemum · 04/03/2024 11:20

Hush as a brand. First item I bought looked like a cross between my school uniform blouse and a utilitarian overall. It cost a fortune & was made of polyester. I sent it straight back. Second item showed I'd learnt from previous mistake: it was at least made of cotton. It's a bit shapeless though & the only time I've worn it was one very hot day when I had to go to London and had a huge bruise on my upper arm. The very thin cotton material, wide, long sleeves rolled up to above my elbows, so I was relatively cool and didn't have to keep explaining how I got the bruise.

zoflora is a disinfectant some people throw it about like holywater ! I remember my Gran used it to clean her flats landing and front stairs.

Giggorata · 04/03/2024 10:06

“did you mean to be so rude?” Is rarely the crushing retort that is imagined.

I prefer the certainty of making it a statement, rather than a question or just telling them to fuck themselves, depending on how much you care about offending them, or how horrible they have been.

Edited

I love that we're all talking about products and this is your 'recommendation'. Very out of the box 😂

I can't imagine saying this in real life, not one I'd use unless talking to a child!

I know, right?! I'm an idiot.

I think that because the products have all been quite different from each other, then I haven't really clicked that the shit recommendations might be analogous. I mean, if MN recommend a terrible pair of under-crackers then you can't assume that the hair dryer recommendation will also be terrible, right?!

In December last year - when I bought Lovall fleece leggings - I genuinely vowed to never buy anything recommended on MN again.

Those Sinophant leggings, there was a whole thread about them the other day! But I mean for £8 what was I expecting, but the way they were spoken about I thought they’d be great.

dementedpixie · 04/03/2024 11:34

I have used zoflora in the fabric softener bit of my machine for smelly gym wear. Also used it diluted when the kids threw up over my carpet and it stopped the carpet smelling really bad.

Don't really use it for anything else.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 04/03/2024 11:34

Lakeland heated airer.

Just crap. And launches an attack when you do anything such as trying to use it.

Hate it.

That was probably me 🤣 they work brilliantly for me. Wear them overnight. Been married nearly 35 years, don’t mind that I look like a dickhead.
How long did you use them? Take about a month to start working. I’m 59 no 11s at all 🤷‍♀️(which I had when I was 40, pre-frownies)

I take MN recommendations with a pinch of salt and almost never buy clothes online, but I do remember trying on a pair of Onitsuka Tiger trainers after S&B said they were the bees knees. Yes they looked good, but the soles were apparently made of cast iron. Most uncomfortable trainers ever.

Jins · 04/03/2024 11:49

That Uniqlo bag…..sorry to fans but it doesn’t hold as much as people claim and it’s not easy to wear over coats etc. I sent mine back the same day.
Some random Birkenstock copies that apparently wore in instantly. They were too big, not very comfortable and had white soles with black leather. Awful
Anyone remember the MN scarf? Big square of lightweight polycotton with tassels. Instant regret on that one.
Henry Hoovers. My carpets have never been so dirty.

On the plus side though I’m enormously grateful for the Lumea recommendations

DrJoanAllenby · 04/03/2024 11:50

Oh yea that awful cheapo half crescent bag from Uniqlo!

What a hideous bag.
