Underwhelming Mumsnetter Recommendations

What things have you bought that've been highly and enthusiastically recommended by MNers and then turned out to be a bit a lot shit?

I have loads 😩Here's just a selection:

  • Heated airier: Giant monstrosity, flimsy as fuck, no different from a radiator.
  • Wool duvet: No warmer than a feather one, flat, looks shit on the bed, feels austere and not very luxurious.
  • Oddballs pants: Really strange gusset that constantly rides up into my fanny causing repeated yeast infections.
  • Loveall fleece leggings: Went bobbly after two wears and one wash, make my legs look fat, warm-ish but nothing to write home about.
  • Estee Laude double wear foundation: Heavy and claggy.
  • Birkenstocks: Made me look like a matronly Danish exchange student en-route to a mountain yoga retreat. Fortunately, I only tried them on and didn't buy them.
  • Fjallraven Kranken backpack: See above, Danish exchange student energy. Again, tried and did not buy.

What are yours?

Aldi florentines - they are not even close to a real florentine. Too small, too crunchy, ingredients are wrong
Aldi Jo Malone “dupes” smell of nothing, not worth £3.99

That’ll be the scarf I mentioned upthread (negatively) I guess. Mine was rubbish - doubt it would have lasted this long.

My dog was buried in it. Just the right size to wrap round a deceased terrier. So maybe it wasn’t a bad buy after all

Oh I’m crying 😂. Which feel so inappropriate. May they rest in peace

I bought Zoflora but was unsure how to use it so it is still unopened.

What do you do with it?

I put it in my steam mop 😂😂🤦🏼‍♀️

My sisters a hairdresser and uses this on me and it's great- maybe depends on hair type though, I have fine straight hair but lots of it and it makes it look shiny and healthy.

it just made my hair feel heavy and greasy 😕

Mytholmroyd · 04/03/2024 14:12

Interesting how different people experience things differently!

I love Birkenstocks in the summer - they are such a relief for my feet after hot sweaty sandals and never give me blisters - I really like the big buckle ones. And I wear them as slippers for the support.

I have a colleague who wears bombshell dresses to work and she looks fab - just suit her body shape and style.

But yes I agree some things have been a huge disappointment.

Agh just realised I've been eyeing up a Panda mattress topper mainly from recommendations on here. Please no-one tell me they are shit!

Had one a year now. It's still fantastic! Also got the panda pillows which we love love love.

effoffwind · 04/03/2024 14:14

Korean wash cloths

Supposedly tonnes of dead skin would miraculously fall from my body leaving me refreshed , energised , looking younger with baby soft skin

Did it fuck
It was like scrubbing my arse with an Ikea dishcloth that was reduced to 10p

Total and utter waste of time and money

TM1979 · 04/03/2024 14:19

A Neom diffuser. Made our surfaces wet. Hated it although I wanted to love it.

Lemonlula · 04/03/2024 14:30

The make up, toiletries & hair suggestion are ones had most failures with. Supagas & converse did not feel more comfy than plimsols so stuck with some cheap ones. Hush & mint velvet seem expensive for the quality.

I like my turtle dove gloves & neck loop but for the price i'd prefer to choose the exact colours so will likely replace with some from small maker on Etsy etc.

Heated airer is great for me as no room for a tumble dryer but wish it had 4 instead of 3 layers and was bit narrower as its awkward to fit in spaces so agree tend to bash into it more often. It doesn't work that well if just hang everything over the bars, they need more strategic placing flat across bars if thicker like jumper/jeans and moving round occasionally.

I also have a plain bombshell dress I bought secondhand which is nice material, suits my figure and is a classic shape so I don't regret that, but I can only imagine Nigella wearing them regularly.

I did that and it promptly broke. Not definitely the cause but the warranty was voided because you aren't supposed to add anything except water and I could hardly have claimed not to have done when it reeked of fragrance.

Topseyt123 · 04/03/2024 14:33

Another hater of the heated airer. I bought the Lakeland Dry soon one after seeing people on here raving about it.

It was utter crap and was taken to the dump after about a year.

It's the sort of thing that sounds like it should be a good idea but in reality doesn't actually do the job. I also realised that if it costs 6p an hour to run as they claimed and I had to leave it on for 10 - 12 hours overnight then I might as well run the tumble dryer for a couple of hours. It actually did the job whereas the heated airer usually only dried the areas of clothing that were in contact with the bars.

I've never bought anything else on an MN recommendation.

Oh that's weird, I've been doing it for years with mine. Just a tiny bit though. No idea if there's any point as this thread calls them both useless 😬 smells nice though.

TwoTeas · 04/03/2024 14:41

I think the trouble with some of these recommendations is that smaller brands end up being a victim of their success, as well as rising costs. I had an early pair of Hush harems and was surprised by how flattering they were, thanks to the weight of the jersey and the cut. Bought a pair last year and had to send them back as they were nothing like my originals - smaller, thinner, narrower cut. Ditto Sweaty Betty leggings which used to be amazing, and are now much less so.

I have to disagree about the wool duvets, though. I love mine, and have slowly changed over the whole house to wool duvets; cool in the summer, warm in the winter, plus being flatter than a down duvet, they make our small bedroom look neater.

Limth · 04/03/2024 14:43

I really like Zoflora but my mum's been using it since the 1980s so I don't really see it as a MN recommendation.

I used it for all kinds of things - in homemade spray cleaner, for washing really stinky clothes, for cleaning the concrete back yard, to freshen up drains....

A Molke bra. I measured it carefully to ensure I ordered the right size. First time I wore it my right boob kept climbing out because it didn't want to be in it, then, when I tried to take it off, I got trapped and dh had to help me out of it. It was also ugly and just plain weird.

Birkenstock sandals which gave me plantar fascitis.

A Bosch washing machine which broke after 20 months.

Boden clothing - tops which were very oversized and surprisingly short, especially as I'm only 5'3".

EcstaticMarmalade · 04/03/2024 14:44

Saltwater sandals- ugly and uncomfortable. So uncomfortable.

Sususudio · 04/03/2024 14:46

Those Molke bras are terrifying ( sorry if anyone loves them but they are). Not that I have actually ordered them; just seen them online but they are incredibly weird.

Mazuslongtoenail · 04/03/2024 14:47

Also came on to say the bastarding turtle doves wrist warmers.

HearMeSnore · 04/03/2024 14:57

A weighted blanket. Recommended by many for sleep disturbance, which I was struggling with at the time.

Bought one (being careful to get the right one for my weight). Used it once, didn't really like the feel of it - it was a bit claustrophobic but I persevered and kept it on me until I fell asleep...and woke up an hour later feeling like I was being crushed to death. Can't bear the thing.

On the plus side, it made me wonder if my existing feather duvet might actually be a bit heavy for me. I bought a cheap Argos fibre-fill duvet that's warm but super light. Now I sleep like a narcoleptic sloth after a heavy meal.

nonevernotever · 04/03/2024 14:58

I love the heated airer (invaluable in a flat without a tumble dryer, turtle dove wristwarmers/fingerless gloves (indeed I'm wearing one of my pairs now) and Sinophant leggings, but like pp I succumbed to the Zoflora hype and it's sitting unloved at the back of the cupboard under the sink.

EndlesslyDistracted · 04/03/2024 14:59

Yeah, I hated my Molke bra, not sure what I was thinking. It was uncomfortable, felt lopsided because of the cross over front and had to be wrestled on and off, it was nowhere near stretchy enough. I sold it.

nonevernotever · 04/03/2024 14:59

Oh and I also love my wool duvets.

I have to admit that's something that never tempted me, they look awful and I get a hot flush just looking at them, there's so much fabric!

lookwhatyoudidthere · 04/03/2024 15:02

If you want to feast your eyes on a real pile of high street toss recommendations, check out the 'bridesmaid dress needed' threads. Flowery, polyester fucking midi nightmares, pages upon pages of the bastards - with everyone agreeing how gorgeous they all are. 🤮

Previousreligion · 04/03/2024 15:03

I tried Superga because I think they look really nice. They don't fit my feet at all sadly.

Other than that, I haven't really followed any Mumsnet recommendations. I read a post about "Essential purchases for newborns" and disagreed with so much of it that I think it made me realise how individual these things are! I also hate most of the suggestions people give when people ask for clothing advice!

People on Mumsnet seem to dislike Hobbs but I really like a lot of their stuff.
