Why are modern dinner plates so fucking massive???

They're HUGE. We're replacing our 1980s dinner set...it's time ... Too many broken, cracked/chipped now.

Looking at new sets..oh my god they're HUGE. Our dinner plates are 24.5cm including rim. Now they're all 27cm+??

Anyone know where you can get a sensible sized dinner plate these days?

I can't fit tall glasses on my top rack if I move the rack up. I prefer to have smaller dinner plates instead and then everything can fit in

Same here. Mugs of all sizes do still fit but we like to have the option to put pint glasses, small pans etc up there too so we mainly use smaller plates (the traditional Denby 9" ones).

I wasn’t trying to issue a diktat saying people must raise their upper rack, l was merely trying to help those such as @Hoglet70 saying plates were too large for the lower one.

You're not wrong they can be massive these days. We've got a Denby set and often use the side plates for a reasonable mid week meal. Or the bowls for anything with rice, pasta etc.

But I do love the big plates when it comes to Sunday Roast. You can get a really good portion on there without it brimming up to the sides. There's nothing more off-putting than a plate of food where you can barely see the actual plate!

I agree and I can't find any shorter wine glasses now, they all seem to have thin, long stems. I used to use IKEA wine glasses with a shorter thicker stem.

It’s because portions are generally much bigger.

You’ve only got to look in old cookery books to see what was considered a ‘normal’ size of e.g. a cake or pudding for 4. I use an old GH recipe for lemon meringue pie but to me it’s hardly worth bothering making the whole thing from scratch for a relatively small pie. We’re not porkers but I do always double it - I rarely make it but dh likes seconds, and/or some left for the next day.

Excellent recipe though - uses both yolks and whites of the eggs, and the juice and zest of the lemons.

I have wine glasses with short stubby stems. Think they were Jamie Oliver ones. Have lasted years as they are quite robust

It's the broad and deep cereal bowls that shock me most. I can fit 3x as much cereal! I'm struggling to find a normal set.

Perhaps people are using them for other things?
I have the opposite issue I'm struggling to find big bowls for oats! They just expand so much if I use a normal size it spills over

Teenage DS is eating far too much cereal atm due to ridiculously big IKEA bowls. I've just ordered some smaller Corelle ones, so I'll get rid of the IKEA ones when they arrive...

I don't like lots of things that I think are too big 😄 - mugs, sofas, cars.

AbstemiousBreakfast · 15/06/2024 11:17

All of the Corelle white frost appreciators - where do you buy these? I've bought some new from eBay, but they were relatively expensive.

I've got 3 different kinds of bowls so far, my family seem to need a lot of small bowls 😀. I think I'd like side plates and small diner plates next.
