Why are modern dinner plates so fucking massive???

They're HUGE. We're replacing our 1980s dinner set...it's time ... Too many broken, cracked/chipped now.

Looking at new sets..oh my god they're HUGE. Our dinner plates are 24.5cm including rim. Now they're all 27cm+??

Anyone know where you can get a sensible sized dinner plate these days?

We use pasta bowls from the White Company. Perfect size!

EveSix · 24/02/2024 13:17

I ended up buying some lovely salad plates on eBay, a much more modest 23 cm diameter which means it's easier to stick to sensible portion-sizes.

I have vintage Royal Dolton. Complete none China dinner service and it’s about 40+ years old. I have to source replacements from eBay.

I have measured the dinner plates and they’re 27cm so given the age of my set, large dinner plates are not a new phenomena.

@wubwubwub if you are on facebook, join a page called "rate my roast"!!! I think those people in that group are the reason for massive dinner plates!! seriously though, have you thought of just buying breakfast plates which are a much better size. incidentally, my current dishwasher is a bosch and I am finally able to put all dinner plate in a row and get them washed!!

Never heard of breakfast plates? Have discovered salad plates though... Which seem to be half way between side and dinner... Sort of!

Ikea

I'm looking for new crockery at the moment as I'm thinking of replacing my thick, heavy Wilko ones that are getting tired and scratched but will not die, and which have annoying bowls that wobble alarmingly when stacked. But what's irking me at the moment is less the diameter (though I'm limited on that by my cupboard size) and more these serving-tray style designs that are everywhere, which these ones look to probably be. I can't remember if it was Tesco or Sainsbury's I looked in but all their plates were this weird high-walled thing.

My dinner plates are 27cm but the ancient plates at the bottom of the pile (just a couple of old Pyrex ones, I think, but they’d be 1960s or early ’70s at the latest) are the same size. I think the set my mmm once thought of as her best china (early ’70s Wedgwood Midwinter) may be a centimetre smaller. It may be that I’ve missed plate inflation because mine are a design that’s been produced for decades (Iittala Teema) so changing the sizes would be too much hassle.

See also: wine glasses. I was looking for small ones last year and had no success at all.

Quizine · 24/02/2024 14:06

Ah the wine glasses.... I had to adjust the shelves in the kitchen cupboard to accommodate the long stems. But I like using long stemmed wineglasses, even though I don't drink myself!

I have wine glasses with short stubby stems. Think they were Jamie Oliver ones from quite a few years ago

Mustreadabook · 24/02/2024 14:30

I found dinner plates small enough for the dishwasher at waitrose/john lewis

SheepAndSword · 24/02/2024 14:32

I bought some new ones and was horrified that they only fit into the microwave at a tilt. Which won't do at all.

Hence trudging to the shops again for some smaller ones.

artant · 24/02/2024 14:37

I have some reasonably sized and very sturdy wineglasses from La Rochère. They’re not exactly fine glassware but that means we don’t break them.

AinsleyHayes · 24/02/2024 14:40

Highly recommend La Rochère for sensibly sized, chic wine glasses without super-long stems. We have the bee ones.

AinsleyHayes · 24/02/2024 14:44

@artant jinx! You have excellent taste Wink

EconomyClassRockstar · 24/02/2024 14:47

I bought some lovely quite flat dinner bowls from HomeSense and use those instead.

RandomMess · 24/02/2024 14:49

I have the super thin tempered glass ones from ikea were 50p each, ditched my Denby for them.

redboots765 · 24/02/2024 14:54

I have a huge collection of 1940's woods wear plates. The dinner plate is 25cm, but the raised rim is huge. The actual bit for food is like a modern side plate.
That's why they were all so slim back then.

alwaysmovingforwards · 24/02/2024 14:58

Yup noticed the same.
I guess it goes along way to help explaining why every other person waddling down the high street is so fat though.

Korkie · 24/02/2024 14:59

When I was a kid, you used to be able to buy what was called breakfast plates.
Size wise they were in between a side plate and a dinner plate.
My mum still has some and they're the perfect size.
I've tried and failed to find some anywhere.

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 24/02/2024 15:01

Salad plates are better. Also ikeas cheap 75p plates are a lot smaller!

Enigma52 · 24/02/2024 15:17

Agree!! Nothing fits in the bloody dishwasher!!

Nannyfannybanny · 24/02/2024 15:24

Ah the relief! I was ripped on here (Mumsnet,) for giving my actual portion sizes. I was called a liar, and so on. My last kitchen was country, butler sink, range. New dining table here. Wanted dinner service in dirty pink. Everywhere was white or grey. Habitat had a blue set similar to the IKEA one shown on here. Almost settled for that. They found the dirty pink in Asda. I can barely lift the plates from the wall cupboard,so I actually use the side plates.

LIZS · 24/02/2024 15:27

And we wonder why there is an obesity crisis in UK. We have a John Lewis set with large dinner plates which are 28.5 cm but I often use the 23cm side plate instead.
