Why are modern dinner plates so fucking massive???

wubwubwub · 24/02/2024 09:09

They're HUGE. We're replacing our 1980s dinner set...it's time ... Too many broken, cracked/chipped now.

Looking at new sets..oh my god they're HUGE. Our dinner plates are 24.5cm including rim. Now they're all 27cm+??

Anyone know where you can get a sensible sized dinner plate these days?

I use pasta bowls as my main dinner plate now

Same

shallowpiece · 24/02/2024 19:42

We had same issue. I went round a few charity shoes with a measuring tape and got a nice everyday set that are plenty big enough for normal portions and under 25cm to fit in our small dishwasher.

DeanElderberry · 24/02/2024 19:56

I've just measured my plates - all willow pattern, some fairly new, some older from charity shops, all Staffordshire.

Dinner plates 25 cm, breakfast plates 20cm, side plates under 17cm. or 10", 8" and 7". Quite big enough.

Like a PP, I have everything in Denby Greenwich, and I've had a lot of it well over 30 years. The plates are 26.5 cm so they haven't got any bigger. They've two slices of side plate too. We use them day in day out and they're very sturdy! I recently got their Ramen noodles bowls and we use them for so many meals!

I replaced some dinner plates because a few were chipped/showing wear and tear, and after reading a tip on here I got them with my Tesco Clubcard points!

Try your local antique auction house. Full dinner services & teasets are ridiculously cheap as they’re “ out of fashion”. It’s the 50s/60s tat that’s selling for stupid prices these days as it’s “ trendy”

DilemmaDelilah · 24/02/2024 20:13

@wubwubwub I have a full set of 1960s Woods Ware Clovelly for sale on Ebay at the moment it you're interested 😁. We bought some in an antiques warehouse, and then collected loads more odd bits until we had enough for 40 people at our wedding. Just selling off the excess at the moment. It's been on there for ages 😞. There are dinner plates, breakfast plates, tea plates, all sorts! The dinner plates aren't huge at all. In fact sometimes not big enough!

artant · 24/02/2024 20:21

wubwubwub · 24/02/2024 15:50

They were possibly serving plates at that size in the 60s

Having checked, mine are 26 rather than 27cm but they just seem plate sized to me! (Any bigger would be too big though, that’s definitely true.) The Pyrex the same size may have been serving plates but the Midwinter ones were definitely dinner plates but those were, I think, ’70s rather than ’60s. My medium sized plates (21cm, I think) are the same size as our old Denby medium size ones (never got round to getting rid of those so they’re still piled up under the current lot in the cupboard).

artant · 24/02/2024 20:24

That Denby Greenwich is a gorgeous colour. Our old Denby stuff had to go because it was so depressingly beige.

I recently bought a set of Eternal Beau plates from a charity shop because I was fed up of eating from the side plates of my modern set.

Oh ..no.. can't be doing with non round plates #FussPot

I really don't like using square plates 😄. A Premier Inn that we stayed at recently had square mugs, the horror.

Elephantswillnever · 24/02/2024 22:22

If you are not bothered about fancy, I buy asda essentials and the plates are much smaller than average ( much better for portion control and fit nicely in the dishwasher)

dementedpixie · 24/02/2024 22:22

I like our square plates and the bowls that came with the set are really useful for pasta and soup and cereal too

goody2shooz · 24/02/2024 22:30

@wubwubwub vintage is your answer. Charity shops usually have loads!

I love the colour so much that I got specially fired tiles in my kitchen to match!

We have Denby Metz which is a gorgeous bright blue with touches of Greenwich, so you can mix in the odd item in full Greenwich, I love the colours

I bought Dunelm's Chartwell china, after taking a side plate & dinner plate from our old set to check the size & make sure it would fit in the dishwasher - they were the same as my old china from the Pier. Just measured the dinnerplates & they're 27cm.

The only thing that annoys me is the straight-sided cereal bowls don't sit in the dishwasher as well as the conical old ones - they don't stack at an angle. Other than that, Chartwell is perfect & just what we were looking for: rimmed plates, not coupe; a subtle & attractive pattern (no loud colours, no words but not plain & institutional); lightweight & with enough different shapes of china & matching items. The only thing I wish they'd produce is a big serving dish, but with just two of us, the open soup bowls do for small serving dishes.

We've got the Dunelm Chartwell too, and I agree with you about the u-shaped cereal bowls. They are a nuisance and don't stack properly. Most dinner sets are the same these days, and it is really irritating. I don't want the Leaning Tower of Bowls in the cupboard!

Longdarkcloud · 25/02/2024 02:06

For anyone with the time and inclination a visit to your local auction house may be useful. They often have boxes of crockery etc from hose clearances. In the past we got full sets cheap and also some lovely glasses. You don’t have to attend the auction, just leave a bid. If you enjoy fossicking it provides a couple of hours entertainment as well.
Have the plates got much heavier or is it my aging wrists because I find it too uncomfortable to lift more than a couple now.

BogRollBOGOF · 25/02/2024 03:09

We have Denby. I also have my old 1980s student plates. The external rim is the same size as my dinner plates, but the internal rim is the same size as the smaller plates. I select which ones I use to manage portion size.

Over-sized plates do encourage larger portions.

I was stunned when I realised that I could fit a whole tin of food into a "little" plastic IKEA children's bowl!

echt · 25/02/2024 03:19

After my late husband had heart bypass surgery, the rehab nurses said to look out pre-60s op(shop) dinner plates as they would hold the proper portion size.

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 25/02/2024 03:23

Its not just dinner plates, a recent set I bought has massive plates and even more massive bowls, which I only use as fruit bowls. Recently cutlery I bought has giant spoons, they're uncomfortably big. That'll teach me to buy online.

Erdinger · 25/02/2024 06:21

Try ikea , they should have a few in the 24 cm range . I bought a few years ago to help with portion control and it does help. Most are just ridiculously oversized tbh.

Zoomzoomzoomweregoingtothemoon · 25/02/2024 06:49

We have these but they are massive and we rarely use them as struggle to fit in dishwasher. Day to day we use the pasta bowls from the same set. The cereal bowls are a pain to stack in the dishwasher though.https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-anyday-two-tone-stoneware-dinner-plates-set-of-4-26cm/grey/p3911941

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 25/02/2024 06:57

We use these 22cm plates (which are supposed to be buffet plates) as the dinner plates are about 27cm and too big for us.

They also do proper small tea plates which can be hard to find.

It's not just dinner plates that have grown.

I am happy with these and have been using them for a few years without issue and they look fine, but quite a few people seem to complain that they get marked really easily by cutlery, so may not suit.

I got these recently. Anyone eating here comments on them being small but they are ideal for us. There are 6 of each item and a salad bowl. They sit so much better in the dishwasher than the last set.
