Why are modern dinner plates so fucking massive???

They're HUGE. We're replacing our 1980s dinner set...it's time ... Too many broken, cracked/chipped now.

Looking at new sets..oh my god they're HUGE. Our dinner plates are 24.5cm including rim. Now they're all 27cm+??

Anyone know where you can get a sensible sized dinner plate these days?

@artant jinx! You have excellent taste Wink

You too! And a love of practicality as I think they may last forever!

My dinner plates are 27cm but the ancient plates at the bottom of the pile (just a couple of old Pyrex ones, I think, but they’d be 1960s or early ’70s at the latest) are the same size. I think the set my mmm once thought of as her best china (early ’70s Wedgwood Midwinter) may be a centimetre smaller. It may be that I’ve missed plate inflation because mine are a design that’s been produced for decades (Iittala Teema) so changing the sizes would be too much hassle.

They were possibly serving plates at that size in the 60s

I recently bought a set of Eternal Beau plates from a charity shop because I was fed up of eating from the side plates of my modern set.

I have the super thin tempered glass ones from ikea were 50p each, ditched my Denby for them.

How do you find them? I have been considering these and am also coming from Denby. Are they reasonably tough?

edited to add - have they scratched or stained?

Teentaxidriver · 24/02/2024 15:55

We had a dinner service set from Neptune. Ended up ditching the dinner plates because they were massive and using the side plates as dinner plates.

ShowDuck · 24/02/2024 15:58

To fit massive salads on obvs!

I have wine glasses with short stubby stems. Think they were Jamie Oliver ones from quite a few years ago

I found charity shops best for the older and smaller wine glasses.

SheepAndSword · 24/02/2024 16:01

@ShowDuck 😆

SmartiesParty · 24/02/2024 16:40

I've just had a look and my cheapy ikea ones are 25cm

RandomMess · 24/02/2024 16:41

@AinsleyHayes love love love them.

House of careless teens. 9 years on hardly any chips or notable scratches. Food stays piping hot, light, don't take up much room in the crockery jar.

Do not regret switching at all. Just wish IKEA had increased the range further.

I have plain white Corelle plates and bowls.

They are made of white glass.

They are very lightweight, take up a small amount of room and don't break! They are also dishwasher proof, oven proof, microwave proof and freezer proof.

They are not the most beautiful but are fabulous for everyday use by the clumsy.

Blanketpolicy · 24/02/2024 17:11

Denby have small, medium and large plates so you can choose the size you prefer, or have both. Their coupe plates are very nice, but heavy with a curved rim and can be a tight fit in the dishwasher.

DillDanding · 24/02/2024 17:27

I was about to say our plates aren’t big, but looked them up and they’re 27cm. They don’t seem big, just standard. But we never fill the plate, just the middle.

Sumthingsweet · 24/02/2024 17:48

Ha ha so true only recently been looking for some all either square like a tray or massive

StaringAtTheWater · 24/02/2024 17:51

Following this, as I'd like some plates which fit properly in the dishwasher!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 24/02/2024 17:55

Plates have got bigger.

Dishwashers and microwaves have got smaller (in the inside)

Last time I went to buy a dishwasher I took one of our mid sized plates to make sure that at least they fit - and quite a few had top shelves too low to make room for the plates underneath.

angela1952 · 24/02/2024 18:11

I agree with the OP, some dinner plates are just too big, some of them are even too big (or deep) for a dishwasher.
I'm looking for pasta plates that aren't just the standard bowl shape as these don't stack well and I keep them on an open shelf.

I quite like the pasta bowl from these though the dinner plate is still big (26.5) and there is a salad plate:

There's also a range of John Lewis crockery which has a a 23cm plate and really nice pasta bowls:

Other than these, if you look at the catering crockery sites you can find plates in far more sizes, just google search "plate" plus the size you want.

Azul 16 Piece Dinner Set

This dinner set comprises 16 pieces from the stunning Azul tableware range.  4 dinner plates, 4 salad plates, 4 pasta bowls and 4 cereal bowls.  The Azul stoneware is made in Portugal using the finest clay and finished with a beautiful reactive glaze....

See also: wine glasses. I was looking for small ones last year and had no success at all.

Yes, I've been looking for ages for something that will fit the top rack of my dishwasher. IKEA have discontinued the ones we had for years that weren't too tall. Most glasses are very tall with skinny stems now.

BonjourCrisette · 24/02/2024 18:31

I have Cornish Blue china and they sell 24.5cm plates. They appear to call them lunch plates, but I use them every day for dinner.

BobbleHatDay · 24/02/2024 18:39

Another vote for Corelle - super lightweight which I love!

Top shelves will adjust height usually

dementedpixie · 24/02/2024 18:58

But if I adjust my top basket upwards to fit in the plates then it's harder to fit glasses in the top basket as I also have a cutlery rack. 25cm seems the best size for our dishwasher

@AinsleyHayes let's face it they are inexpensive if you decide you loathe them!

They haven't stained at all either. I have a large stock as they take up such little space in the drawer.
