Why are modern dinner plates so fucking massive???

wubwubwub · 24/02/2024 09:09

They're HUGE. We're replacing our 1980s dinner set...it's time ... Too many broken, cracked/chipped now.

Looking at new sets..oh my god they're HUGE. Our dinner plates are 24.5cm including rim. Now they're all 27cm+??

Anyone know where you can get a sensible sized dinner plate these days?

I think it started in the 1980s with the trend for "nouvelle cuisine" which was all about small quantities of food artistically presented on an acre of white china plate.

I’m surprised it took this long for the correct and non-PC answer to appear, haha @LuluBlakey1

ThanksItHasPockets · 24/02/2024 10:13

I had this problem with my Denby. I have concluded that the answer is to get 'coupe' rather than 'halo' plates. I have a nice set from John Lewis.

I think our Royal Doulton dinner plates are technically sold as side plates 😄.

wubwubwub · 24/02/2024 10:17

Would you be able to measure the plate? Like, is the rim taking up a lot of the 27cm?

I have same problem with place mats. All huge don’t fit our small table.

PaperDoIIs · 24/02/2024 10:35

Ikea seem to have various sizes. Most sets are 26cm , but individual ones come in 25 and even 24cm . Have a look on their website.

Not what you're asking, but you can actually adjust the height of your shelf in the dishwasher to accommodate bigger plates. Google it and you'll see how to do it x

Yes we did that after we bought these giant plates.

@wubwubwub if you are on facebook, join a page called "rate my roast"!!! I think those people in that group are the reason for massive dinner plates!! seriously though, have you thought of just buying breakfast plates which are a much better size. incidentally, my current dishwasher is a bosch and I am finally able to put all dinner plate in a row and get them washed!!

ColourByNumbers88 · 24/02/2024 10:51

It's ridiculous, doesn't help the obesity issue.

Cornishware do different plate diameters. Pricy but they sometimes do seconds sales.

I replaced my wedding set after 30 years and have really struggled to get something that is good quality and doesn't look as though it was made for giants. I've ended up buying old stuff from charity shops - the kind of sets people were given for wedding presents and just kept in a glass cabinet for30 years. I've found it's all dishwasher size and proof but not microwavable - perhaps predating microwaves?

When we moved abroad we didn't have any crockery at first, so we bought a random 1950s dinner set from a neighbour who was clearing out their late brother's house. Dinky little white porcelain plates and bowls with a red rose motif and gilding around the edges. Obviously not microwaveable or robust enough for picnics etc, so we got a set of old Pyrex plates and bowls for a couple of euros in a car boot sale. These were brilliant (and microwaveable) until most of them ended up getting broken in the washing up over the years. I've been trying to source replacements but they are surprisingly rare in charity shops. We have some big modern dinner plates but those are for pizzas.

Natsku · 24/02/2024 11:13

Try charity shops, we have 23cm ones that we use for every day and 26cm for special occasions.

MrsElsa · 24/02/2024 11:17

Sainsburys or Tesco basic white ones 🤷‍♀️

noblegiraffe · 24/02/2024 11:17

Yep, I bought what I thought was a normal set of plates from M&S and they didn't fit in the cupboard, you couldn't close the door. Madness.

I was going to suggest IKEA as well.

Mine are massive (and square), I find the bowls to mine are huge. I weighed out the recommended amount of cereal the other day, put it in my bowl and it looked like hardly anything.

@xSideshowAuntSallyx

thats because it is 'hardly anything' in an attempt to keep their 'serving size' nutrition in the guidelines.

EndlesslyDistracted · 24/02/2024 11:27

We've got 25 year old Denby too (wedding present), we all use the 9" ones all the time, the bigger ones only come out for Christmas dinner.

Lilofthevalley · 24/02/2024 12:31

I had the same issue and eventually found some Pierre Cardin ones. Really cheap and inoffensive. lasted a few years so far. I can't actually remember where I got them from but they have some new on Ebay 4 for £14.00.4 Pack Dinner Plate 25cm Pierre Cardin Fossil White Made In Italy BGEU1090 | eBay

Because we as a norm massively over portion it's as if we can't face leaving the TV to get seconds if needed so stuff ourselves instead. Gone are the one palm size is a portion idea ....until you seek medical advice.

GatherlyGal · 24/02/2024 12:59

I gave up on my full size dinner plates years ago and use a large side-plate. Plenty big enough and fit in the dishwasher easy.

I'm not sure it stops me being so greedy but maybe it does a bit.

trulyunruly01 · 24/02/2024 13:01

I have a 1950s English Castles dinner service. And the dinner plates are 2cm smaller diameter than a modern dining plate. The actual central dip where the food should sit is 3cm smaller.
The dessert bowls are much smaller as well.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 24/02/2024 13:04

I bought Dunelm's Chartwell china, after taking a side plate & dinner plate from our old set to check the size & make sure it would fit in the dishwasher - they were the same as my old china from the Pier. Just measured the dinnerplates & they're 27cm.

The only thing that annoys me is the straight-sided cereal bowls don't sit in the dishwasher as well as the conical old ones - they don't stack at an angle. Other than that, Chartwell is perfect & just what we were looking for: rimmed plates, not coupe; a subtle & attractive pattern (no loud colours, no words but not plain & institutional); lightweight & with enough different shapes of china & matching items. The only thing I wish they'd produce is a big serving dish, but with just two of us, the open soup bowls do for small serving dishes.

Buy dessert plates instead. They are wider than side plates and smaller than dinner plates. We have some and use them at lunch time. They are teh size you are looking for I think.

Or Amazon have very plain 24cm ones here

Quizine · 24/02/2024 13:07

God yes, the plates are like manhole covers these days.

I'm not into stylish stuff at all, just want practical and when you think of it, few look at the plate, just what's on it! (I have Denby in the loft for Christmas though).

So I have plain white plates from drum roll..... the Pound shop that I got 8 or so years ago, together with side plates and cereal/soup bowls. They are still going strong and no chips or scratches. The dinner plates are "portion friendly" 23 cm. and they are used every day. Dishwasher friendly too.

I can see the purpose; I have one giant plate that gets used for serving extra-large pizzas.

When I donated the remains of my Pier china (down from 12 settings to six due to wear & tear), I kept the giant plate & bowl for serving huge roasts.
