Why are modern dinner plates so fucking massive???

wubwubwub · 24/02/2024 09:09

They're HUGE. We're replacing our 1980s dinner set...it's time ... Too many broken, cracked/chipped now.

Looking at new sets..oh my god they're HUGE. Our dinner plates are 24.5cm including rim. Now they're all 27cm+??

Anyone know where you can get a sensible sized dinner plate these days?

If you don't find something that you like in a smaller size you can go for the larger sized with a proper rim (i.e. not a "coupe" plate) and only fill inside the rim as the middle is about the size that you're looking for. Really annoying though! There are quite a few catering type dinner plates with a really wide rim, like a soup plate.

borntobequiet · 25/02/2024 08:10

Plates have been getting bigger for decades. Many supermarket basic ranges have more traditional sized plates, though, hence my last two sets have come from (I think) Sainsbury’s and Asda. They’re plain white and indistinguishable in quality from far more expensive items, in fact have been admired.

@twingiraffes
I agree with you about the u-shaped cereal bowls. They are a nuisance and don't stack properly. Most dinner sets are the same these days, and it is really irritating. I don't want the Leaning Tower of Bowls in the cupboard!

Yes, I agree about the dishwasher stacking and since I keep mine on an open shelf that's the problem that I have with virtually all pasta bowls. I don't like the modern crockery with irregular rims for the same reason.

I often have a rant about non-stacking crockery (I managed to find seemingly the one sole brand/model of stacking double-walled glass coffee cup in existence) and usually get a rant in return from DP about how it's a form of conspicuous consumption — showing off that you can afford a big enough house to not have to stack your mugs, glasses or bowls 🤣 I mean, it's a theory…

Oblomov24 · 25/02/2024 08:22

I have this, looking for plates that aren't too big to fit in dishwasher, drives me mad.

I don't think I'd want things splattered all over shelves in any case but not sure if I agree with your DP!

I'm getting on a bit and have downsized completely to a flat so every inch of shelf is valuable but I don't want it to look too cluttered. I used to have a "best" set of crockery but have managed to sell it so all I want now is something everyday that looks stylish but actually stacks properly.

ChocolateRat · 25/02/2024 08:38

But there seem to be so many of us who want stacking crockery, so it's bizarre that stuff that stacks stably and tidily is usually something that has to be sought out and chosen from a tiny, limited range, and that doesn't usually explicitly state its stackiness.

bouncydog · 25/02/2024 08:49

For 5 years I’ve been ranting about our Denby white plates (middle size) not fitting in the expensive neff dishwasher to the point that I was going to replace it! Then adjusting the top basket setting was mentioned! 😳😳

Deanefan · 24/02/2024 09:17

We have Denby Greenwich (wedding present over 20 years old) the dinner plates are indeed massive but we have a lot of the medium plates too in the accent design and they are around 24.5cm. The large ones are useful for big roast dinners and the teenagers - who then have a medium plate for the extra roasties and yorkshire puds that won’t fit on the main plate!
So take a look at Denby they tend to produce standard shapes and sizes in all the colours/patterns.

We bought a Denby dinner set a few months ago. We have found that despite heating the plates food goes cold very quickly on them. We have given up using the mugs for the same reason.

ObliviousCoalmine · 25/02/2024 09:27

Buy vintage!

OooScotland · 25/02/2024 13:31

We mostly use old Habitat Tzaria pasta dishes, they’re about 24cm (flat with a 4cm high rim, so a kind of cross between a tea plate and a bowl) we eat a lot of ‘mixed’ type food so the Denby Halo cereal bowls also see a lot of use.

We both eat normal amounts (and I’m a couple of stone overweight) but dinner plates are so huge….I can’t remember the last time I got one out of the cupboard.

The John Lewis one I mentioned earlier does stack, but it has a slightly over-neat John Lewis look about it and is quite thin. Sales people usually tell me that bowls that stack untidily give a more rustic look - which I don't like or want. It's a shame the Sophie Conran crockery is asymmetrical because apart from that I quite like it.

angela1952 · 25/02/2024 14:09

I thought that the Layered Lounge set might stack but they were evasive when I asked them about stacking and played the rustic card.

ChocolateRat · 25/02/2024 15:52

Bowls that stack untidily also give a more shards-all-over-the-floor look IME 😒

MEgirl · 26/02/2024 00:28

>I have plain white Corelle plates and bowls.<

I love, love, love my Corelle. It's one of the best things I bought when living overseas. My DD dropped a stack of IKEA stoneware soup bowls which smashed to smithereens on the tiled floor so I replace the whole dinner service with Corelle Forest White and have never regretted the purchase. They have been dropped and not broken, they fit in the dish washer and non have chipped in the almost 14 years that I've had them.

MidnightMeltdown · 17/04/2024 00:55

It's not only dinner plates, it's mugs too. I like standard 300ml-ish mugs made out of fine China.

What I keep seeing in the shops these days are giant bowls with handles, usually made out of some kind of stoneware (which I also hate). To make matters worse I keep receiving them as gifts!

Why would anybody want a ginormous, thick, heavy mug that takes up half your cupboard? I don't get it.

These basic plates from Ikea are very cheap, 25cm and surprisingly nice to eat from.

They also have a range of bowls and side plates to match.

When I saw a dietician the first thing she said was to cut the size of my dinner plate and bowls and it really does make a difference.

OFTAST white, Plate - IKEA

OFTAST white, Plate. This tableware has the same look and feel as bone porcelain, but is made of tempered glass. This means that we can push the price down and you get an elegant and shiny product – at a lower cost.

When you find one let me know! It's my life's work to find dinner plates that don't stop my dishwasher washing properly.

In most modern dishwashers you can raise the top shelf so that larger plates will fit underneath. A surprising number of people are not aware of this.

I was not aware and I am off to look in my dishwasher forthwith!!!

EndlesslyDistracted · 17/04/2024 06:36

Yes but then you can hardly fit anything in the top rack.

So have we! They were bought in the early 90s in groups of 8. Apart from a couple of chipped plates, they go on and on and on.
Great value.

RandomMess · 17/04/2024 08:30

@Gingerkittykat that's the set we have them. Ditched our Denby for them in fact.

The food stays hot, nice and light and take up little space height wise in the crockery drawer as well as the dishwasher.

Originals are at least 8 years old and 1 plate chipped in that time despite the 6 x teens best efforts!!!!

Large mugs still fit on my top rack.

I can't fit tall glasses on my top rack if I move the rack up. I prefer to have smaller dinner plates instead and then everything can fit in
