Went to see a medium

I went to see a medium yesterday for the first time. It was pure indulgence to see if there was anything in it. The medium did not hit on anything that resonated with me and I felt it was pure speculation. I'm curious now though... Has anyone here had a really accurate psychic or medium reading that simply couldn't have been made up? My friend swears that she has had genuine readings and regularly visits to stay in contact with her mother's spirit.

Yes. Went to a spiritualist church service once with friends. The medium mentioned a harmonica to my friend. Turns out she had bought one for her brother but she had not mentioned that to us.

Load of bollocks. It's all a con.

TheShellBeach · 23/02/2024 19:58

It's all absolute nonsense.

It plays on the emotions of grieving people and to me that's a pretty low thing to do.

My ExH went to one a year after his dad died very suddenly. He found the man very accurate about too many details for him to be a fake. Man wouldn’t take any details or money . Most are fakes but I believe that there are a few- very few- genuine ones

Andthereyougo · 23/02/2024 20:14

Yes, just under 3 weeks after DH died. I’d never met the woman before. I only gave her my first name ( common enough) and named a random town in the county when she asked where I was coming from. I didn’t drive my own car ( just chance, it was in the garage) and parked out of sight of her house. So she had no clues about me.
She gave me at least 20 clear facts . No flannelling such as “ I have a Jim…John….Jack?”
She gave me at least 7 names , accurate first time for each. These included DH’s DDs name ( not an English name) my mother’s full name and my best friend who was sat in her car down the road .
I didn’t give her any info as we went along , I think I was too stunned.

I’ve been to a few over the years and it’s a mixed bag. Some definitely have a gift, but so often with others it’s obvious they are fishing.

I went a lot in my early 20’s after a bereavement. I think they do profile you. As a young woman they’d often say they had a baby/child in spirit near me. That means nothing to me. Cynical old me thinks that they say that because often young women have had a miscarriage/ abortion and are struggling to come to terms with it.

also with the names things- it’s always a Mary or a Margaret.

having said that, some of have been very accurate with exact names and detailed descriptions of a situation.

I’ve struggled to find a good one in recent years, even recommendations can be hit and miss.

I went to see one years ago with a friend from work. Friend made the booking, the medium had no clue who I was. She was extremely accurate with her observations (I wasn't grieving so had no reason to read anything into her statements). I didn't have to tell her a single thing, but she was still spot on.

It's just clever cold reading.

I saw a psychic who described my partner in detail - including the names of the people around him - and a physical description including his personality, career, clothes, height, hair, erm - shortcomings! I didn’t feed the psychic any information about my partner at all.

Untilitisnt · 23/02/2024 23:19

Funny how these people who are supposedly communicating with your dead relative, never let you ask said relative a question. The medium will tell you 'ethel says the teapot is under the mangle', but try to ask ethel a question, and you are told 'it doesn't work like that'
Yeah, right.
Dead people are dead people. C'est tout. Over. No-one is pining for the fjords because they are, as was the parrot, dead

I knew what every post on this thread would say before I opened it.

That’s £500 please. You can pass the hat.

And one of you has a loved one with a name beginning with J, or it might be E. Is there a Jo, or maybe an Emma? It’s definitely something like those.

That’s another £500 please.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/02/2024 23:42

I went to see Derek Acorah during one of his tours .

It was interesting , he didn't hone in on me but I wasn;t expecting anything .
If you didn;t believe it wouldn;t change your mind but it was interesting .

I have also had a very accurate reading but that was years ago (late 80s)

OutOfTheHouse · 23/02/2024 23:48

I’ve heard it said, by a medium, that there are two kinds of mediums. Eyes open and eyes closed.

Eyes open know it’s a con and eyes closed think it’s real.

It’s never real, but some people think it is.

TheFormidableMrsC · 23/02/2024 23:51

I went to a spiritual church medium thing and dragged a mate along. She had lost a brother when he was young. She got picked out to say her brother was telling her she needed to get her breast checked. Months later she was diagnosed with breast cancer. I didn't get anything out of it except she didn't die of something that might not have shown itself for a while 🤷🏻‍♀️

BlushingMermaid · 23/02/2024 23:52

I don't know, I mostly think it's a con but my grandma went to a medium and she told her that twins would be born soon and then she corrected herself to say they would be like twins but not twins and my grandma was like wtf does that mean?

She had two daughters pregnant at the same time and a few months later they both went into labour on the same day and my cousins were born (one was premature).

Which is kinda cool but I mostly think it's BS.

SantaBarbaraMonica · 23/02/2024 23:57

It’s a con. A smart reading/profiling and an ability to hone in on vulnerabilities. I went to my first last weekend with a load of friends. (Not my choice but someone arranged it). A number were shocked at the detail and accuracy. I noticed she tried very similar details with me, but I’m culturally from a very different background to all my friends. She was so off for me but had profiled correctly for the others. She tried on me the same starting points as had worked with the others. Then she rapidly flicked through similar but different prompts waiting to hit on something. I was embarrassed so acknowledged something vaguely and she went to town on it with generic points that couldn’t be disproved ‘you need to speak to your family about that. Someone very close to you has unresolved issues around it. Be careful they are in a bad way but you’ll recognise it when you see it’.

its a game, sorry.

Amugwithoutahandle · 24/02/2024 00:10

I always assume it’s a big con because it’s just a guessing game about someone’s name and how they died ie stuff you know already. No one who has died ever passes on anything very original or specific or interesting do they?

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 24/02/2024 02:55

Of course you can't communicate with the dead because they're fucking DEAD. Their brains have rotted away. They can't think, talk or send messages. How could they?

It's ridiculous enough to think you can communicate with them, but to believe that dead people can also see into the future!
Dear lord, how? At what point does critical thinking kick in to let you know that some things just aren't possible?

I actually find it quite depressing that grown adults can believe such nonsense.

Tourmalines · 24/02/2024 02:58

It’s all a load of nonsense.

Coyoacan · 24/02/2024 03:32

It's kind of boring how so many people on mumsnet are so certain about all the mysteries of the world. I don't know what remains to surprise them now that they have nothing left to learn.

I haven't a clue whether I believe in mediums or not, but it is a fun conversation and some strange things happen

MariaVT65 · 24/02/2024 03:34

No, because they are all con artists. They are just good at reading micro expressions. And if they have your full name they can also now look you up on social media/linkedin etc.

MariaVT65 · 24/02/2024 03:38

I had one tell me I would marry a blonde Austrian man. (Guess who I’m now not married to).

Had another one tell me I would have a long relationship with a guy I loved at the time. He killed himself a couple of years later.

They tell you what you want to hear.

Justtellingya · 24/02/2024 03:42

A lassie I did my social work training with worked as a medium before doing her sw training ( yeah, I know - ethical person eh?) and told me how they did the cold readings. It's pretty despicable stuff- preying on those grieving.

Blackcats7 · 24/02/2024 03:45

There was a post on my local fb group recently asking for recommendations for a “good” medium. I was desperate to post it’s utter bollocks get a grip on yourself but didn’t because any sort of disagreement often gets deleted if the admin (who runs it as a personal fifedom) doesn’t agree with you.
However I was tempted to get my popcorn out when yet more nutters of another delusion jumped in telling the op that she was messing with evil spirits and going against the bible’s instructions.
This bizarre display was allowed by admin so I was kept entertained but it was depressing to reflect on the intellect of my fellow locals.
