What do you say when your groceries are delivered?

Idly pondering this as I wait for my Sainsburys delivery.

I always say “pop it in the porch and I’ll unload it.” Then empty the crates into big Ikea bags to carry through to the kitchen.

if you get groceries delivered, what do you say and do?

Thank you. Usually the same driver, and if not they make a note of your delivery preferences (waitrose) so no need for anything else, so usually then on to a very british chat about the weather!!

Hoglet70 · 18/02/2024 10:02

Crates stacked in the porch and I unload them in to bags. I would love to take them through to the kitchen but the dogs would escape.

soundsys · 18/02/2024 10:02

Usually just thanks! I take the crate of fresh stuff at the door and then unload in the kitchen, while I'm doing that the kids unload the other stuff in piles in the hall

TeabySea · 18/02/2024 10:03

I thank them. I unpack at the door (kitchen at front of house), and make small talk about how busy they are, popular shopping delivery options etc.

Edited for spelling

Wishlist99 · 18/02/2024 10:04

Thank you and here are my bags to return : but I get Ocado so it comes bagged and it’s a quick transaction.

CurlsLDN · 18/02/2024 10:04

Of course I do say thankyou first!

Oh and in terms of what I do - carry crates through to kitchen, unload them and give them back. Usually rope in dh and or 1 child to help

Elephantsarenottheonlyfruit · 18/02/2024 10:05

Doesn’t your stuff come in bags? I get Ocado and take the bags out of crates at the front door , take them to kitchen and repeat!

ChanelNo19EDT · 18/02/2024 10:06

Nothing much. Since covid, they never bring it in. Probably for the best.

TooBusyGazingAtStarss · 18/02/2024 10:06

Does any one tip their delivery driver? I usually give them a few quid.. but we do have our delivery early on a Sunday morning.

DappledThings · 18/02/2024 10:07

"Hiya, thank you". And then they put the crates down and I carry them through one-by-one to the kitchen. They've never expected to do anything else, I don't think I've had to give an instruction.

CorylusAgain · 18/02/2024 10:10

I say "Hello" and respond to any chat from them. I unload from the crates at the front door into bags. Then say "Thank you. Bye"

CurlsLDN · 18/02/2024 10:11

Interesting, so it seems some people pick up the crates and carry them through to the kitchen to unload, then return them to the driver at the door, while others unload at the door. And Ocado people still get given bags.

theres no deep meaning to this ‘survey’, i just always wonder if im doing the same as everyone else or if the delivery driver approves of my method! I always want to send them on their way as quick as possible as i imagine they must be on tight schedules.

I decant the stuff from crate to big shopping bags at my front door while making idle chit chat. Don't want them in my house......

"yes, I'm working later"

"yes, it's been a lot milder recently"

"oh look Tesco person, my fruit is mouldy again, can you refund this"

"No bread this week, fancy Tesco not having a single loaf of any bread related product for a substitute......"

Skillest · 18/02/2024 10:13

Usually "you're half an hour early again"

Fucks me off. I order a 1h time window for a reason. They're never late, but I'd say at least 50% of my deliveries come early.

Familiaritybreedscontemptso · 18/02/2024 10:14

Just thank you, potentially a bit of small talk. I use Ocado so everything comes in bags, quick unload at the front door, give them bags back then off they go.

BananaPyjamaLlama · 18/02/2024 10:15

I ask them to put the crates on my doorstep. I then unload into my own collapsible crates, say thanks very much and wave goodbye. Quick and easy for me to then unload and put away and quick and easy for the driver.
Carrying the crates through and then unloading........... no driver wants you to do that I dont think.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 18/02/2024 10:15

I say yes please, the usual driver carries crates into kitchen (Tesco) I unload crates and stack at door, give them a tip and say goodbye!

amieloue · 18/02/2024 10:22

Ohhh I've always stood at the front door. Took things out of the crate and put behind he on the floor. Then once they have gone I move it into the kitchen?

Could I be doing it easier?

MintTwirl · 18/02/2024 10:24

Thank you several times. Chat about his wife and grandchildren if it’s my regular driver, the weather if it’s someone else.
We have a side door into our kitchen so they put the crates there and I transfer into an ikea bag/onto the kitchen table.

chatw0o0 · 18/02/2024 10:24

"Hello"

They put the bags in my doorway.

"Thank you" - and respond to have a nice day/evening/weekend/whatever - if it gets said.

amieloue · 18/02/2024 10:24

How come some of you have usual drivers too? I have mine delivered every week and it's always different. Do you live in a village / town?

ceecee32 · 18/02/2024 10:25

Morrisons - everything in bags that they bring into kitchen. Always tell them that they have been a massive help bringing them in.

Springisintheair01 · 18/02/2024 10:27

I didn’t know people tipped. Those who do, how much do you give?

ColourMeBlue · 18/02/2024 10:27

I take from the crates on the floor into shopping bags I have ready.i am now thinking is there an easier way.ive never known someone carry the crates into the kitchen.and I've certainly never tipped😂
