What do you say when your groceries are delivered?

Idly pondering this as I wait for my Sainsburys delivery.

I always say “pop it in the porch and I’ll unload it.” Then empty the crates into big Ikea bags to carry through to the kitchen.

if you get groceries delivered, what do you say and do?

I say thank you and they leave the bags at the front door ,& I return the bags from the previous delivery.

PawsisShady · 18/02/2024 10:30

I carry the crates in and tip the stuff out on the kitchen floor then sort it once they've gone

LilBus · 18/02/2024 10:30

No bags with the shops I order from so I just literally tip it all out on the crate onto the floor in the hallway then say thanks / bye after (no small talk) a few drivers have made comments about me tipping it all on the floor so I can see from this thread that it’s unusual 😂 can’t be dealing with standing there unloading 1/2 items at a time that would take forever and hate small talk so want them gone as quickly as possible

icelollycraving · 18/02/2024 10:31

I have a little British chat about weather/traffic etc, occasionally moan about the random packing of bags, accept the bags and say thanks for their help and away they go, I use ocado. They are all v friendly.

OldTinHat · 18/02/2024 10:31

They bring the crates to my front door, I apologise for being on my hands and knees but that's easier for me to unload crates into bags that I drag into the kitchen when they've gone.

TeenLifeMum · 18/02/2024 10:32

I say hi, thank you… here’s my bags, there’s 16 of them. (Ocado so you hand back the bags and get 10p per bag you return a so much faster to take to the kitchen after years of crates with Asda).

Talipesmum · 18/02/2024 10:33

Say hello, yes I’m fine with substitutions or not depending, and take the crates through to kitchen where we speedily unload onto the surfaces. Can’t really unload in the hall as it’s tiny, and it takes three seconds to walk through into the kitchen and do it so it’s not wasting any time.

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 18/02/2024 10:33

I just take the crates through to the kitchen and unload onto the kitchen floor/table. Return the empty crate to the driver. It's pretty speedy as I pretty much just tip them out after removing e.g. eggs/lightbulbs and then sort out afterwards.

Why faff about unloading it all into something else first to carry through?

I just say Hi at the start and 'thanks bye' at the end.

IncompleteSenten · 18/02/2024 10:33

I say hello, how are you? they say fine thanks, you? I lie and say doing great thank you (they possibly also lied about being fine). While I stack the crates behind me we exchange some socially expected observations about the weather because silence is apparently considered awkward or rude and weather observations are standard filler, then I hand them the empty crates from the last delivery and say thank you, they say see you next week then I shut the door.

I only tip the person delivering the Christmas shop and it's just a token tenner.

amieloue · 18/02/2024 10:33

I do hate the small talk or silence or general chat. I hate it all. I'm autistic though.

I preferred it when things were in bags. Much quicker.

Can't they make the bags from recycled products?

Moier · 18/02/2024 10:34

I'm disabled so luckily they unload my sainsbury delivery onto my kitchen top.
They are wonderful from Sainsbury.
Iceland would not do this and l had to get my lovely neighbour to bring in from my front path and up my disabled steps.
I'm always grateful to the sainsbury delivery people.

BananaPyjamaLlama · 18/02/2024 10:34

@amieloue decant into your own crates, plastic boxes or reusable shopping bags (those huge canvas ones that stay open easily) - makes it far easier to then cart to the kitchen.

Me too and having a formula for the situation really helps

Also swapping crates rather than emptying them.

We got the first lot by asking the click and collect person if we could start doing that and they said yes, so we've got a few stacked in the utility room and we swap them. The delivery drivers are fine with doing that.

It's getting the first set of crates that's the tricky bit.

HurdyGurdy19 · 18/02/2024 10:37

Just usual small talk, whilst unloading the shopping from their crates into washing baskets, which I then carry through to the kitchen to unpack once the driver has left.

Definitely wouldn't tip them - godfathers, where has this constant tipping culture come from, and where does it end?

TheChosenTwo · 18/02/2024 10:40

When I had ocado I used to just take the bags out as they were bringing the crates to the door, very swift. Hello, thanks, goodbye.
Switched to Tesco as I hated the use of plastic bags and now it’s still pretty much the same hello, thanks, goodbye - I just take the crates through; remove anything breakable and then tip the crates on to the side. It’s so quick. They usually comment on my speed so I don’t know if people are literally taking one thing out at a time and putting them on the side or what! My kitchen is quite far away from my front door but I’m like a shopping ninja 😂

CorylusAgain · 18/02/2024 10:40

Well the "empty the crates onto the floor" approach is a new one to me.
Who knew there was such a variety? 😆
Oh and had no idea anyone tipped

aloysiusflyte · 18/02/2024 10:42

The driver brings the crates to the front door, I unpack quickly into big blue ikea bags that I drag to the kitchen when the driver has gone.

Usually have some small talk about traffic/weather whilst unpacking, they ask if my substitutions are ok, say thank you and they're gone!

HesterLee · 18/02/2024 10:43

I carry each crate from the front door into the kitchen and tip it out onto the floor. Sometimes the driver is chatty, sometimes not, so I either chat or not depending on their preference. Emptying crates at the front door would take longer. Obvs hello and thankyou. Never thought to tip and doubt I ever will.

aloysiusflyte · 18/02/2024 10:44

I also never tip! I can barely afford the food shop.

Tayegete · 18/02/2024 10:45

We don’t tip out the crates. DH brings the crates in to the kitchen and DC and I everything out and pile it up on the kitchen work top.

BinkyBuntyFintyCunty · 18/02/2024 10:46

Empty into big blue ikea bags at door. Tip £2

SleepingStandingUp · 18/02/2024 10:47

Hello,
Ooh yes I've got bags
Oops I didn't realise I'd ordered two of those, can I send one back
Oh dear yes it's heard the traffic was awful
Haha no they're at school today so no one stealing the food
Ooh looking forward to these
Oh lovely, how old are they?
Haha yeah thank you
Brilliant, all done
Thanks, bye

Or something like that.

Champagnebar · 18/02/2024 10:47

I’m not sure that Sainsbury’s delivery drivers would be allowed to keep a cash tip ?

I use Sainsbury’s

Perhaps those delivering from independent stores could accept a tip

happypillsareworking · 18/02/2024 10:48

They put it on the doorstep and we decant into shopper bags.

Said safe travels today as our area is flooded!!

Edited

Because if I tipped £200 worth of shopping onto the sides, I wouldn't be able to move to unpack.
