What do you say when your groceries are delivered?

Idly pondering this as I wait for my Sainsburys delivery.

I always say “pop it in the porch and I’ll unload it.” Then empty the crates into big Ikea bags to carry through to the kitchen.

if you get groceries delivered, what do you say and do?

I often have my nightie and dressing gown on if it's an evening delivery, and hope they don't think it's a come on or are a sex offender. Even when dressed I do realise they can see down my cleavage when I bend down - if they really want to gawp at 55-year-old saggy boobs in a mumsy bra.

positivesliceofpie · 18/02/2024 12:05

I used to put everything in a laundry basket.
Now i just get the crates and tip straight on the hall way floor thank you by shut the door and pack it away.
Got to get another laundry basket.

We have our big ‘Bags for Life’ ready at the door to unload the crates into the bags and teenager carries the bags to the kitchen as we go. Then we unpack the bags at a leisurely pace when the delivery person has left. I have always thought that there is a time element that the delivery person doesn’t want to be hanging around too long so we should be quick.

RoseMarigoldViolet · 18/02/2024 12:37

We usually have a little chat with them during the process but it is pretty quick. We have it down to a fine art with all family member’s expected to help.

Onand · 18/02/2024 12:39

‘Thanks’ as I quickly unload the crates and then hand them a fiver/ tenner depending what I have on me.

MadDogMama · 18/02/2024 12:44

I am a supermarket delivery driver.

Everyone does things differently, some carry the totes through to the kitchen and unpack there, some unpack into carrier bags, some tip the contents of the totes into their porch/hallway, and some ask us to carry through to the kitchen and help them to unpack (elderly/disabled).
Every option is fine, it's whatever works best for the customer.

Most people are polite and kind to us, but others look down their noses and don't even thank us. It is of course, lovely when we do get a small tip, or an offer of a drink/snack or even to use the loo. 😊

mt9m · 18/02/2024 12:48

I take out any breakables and then tip the entire crate onto the kitchen floor or into an ikea bag. They usually arrive early when I'm working and don't have time to individually unload each item. Takes 10 seconds to dump it out.

Blanketpolicy · 18/02/2024 12:54

Depends on the driver and if they are running behind on their deliveries, some will plonk the crates inside the door when I open it and I'll carry the crate to the nearby kitchen. I have a delivery saver so get two smaller deliveries a week and there is never that much to unload. More often they will say where do you want them and I'll ask them the bring into the kitchen.

Most are chatty and would play with my very placid Labrador who would be standing watching the delivery (they still say they miss him being there), some would chat about random stuff, like how irritating the neighbour across the road with the loud exhaust must be, or the lack of parking in the estate, weather, any plans for today etc.

Unless they arrive early outside their timeslot and I am on a work call, then I just point to the headset, they give me a thumbs up, unload onto the worktop for me and leave quietly.

Good guys generally.

Thank them and give a couple pound tip

thomasinacat · 18/02/2024 12:59

Sometimes unpack crates at door into big shopping bags, but usually ask drivers to carry crate through into kitchen and then I unload there. Drivers from all 3 of the supermarkets I use (Sainsbury's, Ocado & Waitrose) will bring them in if you ask, majority will offer to help you unload.

Friendly smalltalk about the local area usually. Most are cheerful and friendly, once just as delivery arrived our cat brought a mouse inside and the driver helped me chase around the living room to catch it.

Mazuslongtoenail · 18/02/2024 13:01

‘Thank you. Im going to shut you out to keep the heat in’.

close door, take crates through and unpack onto the counter, return and swap over to the next batch.

I used to like it pre Covid when they came into the kitchen and would have a quick chat while emptying the crates but it’s now so established to do a doorstep handover that I think I’d sound a bit creepy making them come into the house 😆

Blanketpolicy · 18/02/2024 13:04

‘Thank you. Im going to shut you out to keep the heat in’.

I couldn't bring myself to shut the door on them leaving them freezing outside looking at my door, it would just seem so rude! Even during covid I would have left the door open and talked to them from the kitchen while I was unloading!

Janetsmug · 18/02/2024 13:06

I usually use Tesco, who bring shopping in crates and I unload into bags at the door whilst making polite small talk. Last week I decided to try Morrisons, was all geared up, bags and small talk at the ready, only to be presented with my shopping already bagged and the delivery guy calling a cheery 'bye' as I opened the door. Couldn't decide whether I was relieved or disappointed at the time but have ordered from them again this week so my antisocial side obviously won Smile

Mouse82 · 18/02/2024 13:08

I don't see mine as I have authority to leave at the door. I get a photo once they've been dropped off. On occasion I'll have time to yell out a quick thank you to them.

Lorac23 · 18/02/2024 13:12

The bags are why we're often happy to pay a bit more for Ocado (though for many things we buy they're on a par with every other major supermarket that delivers). If getting deliveries from a non bagger I always have big IKEA or other large bags on hand and decant in the porch but I am always conscious of how slow I am.

PickAChew · 18/02/2024 13:16

I ask them to carry the crates into the kitchen for me, where I unload them onto the side from a stool. I can't manage too much bending and lifting without knackering myself for the rest of the day.

Tiddlywinks63 · 18/02/2024 13:21

TeenLifeMum · 18/02/2024 10:32

I say hi, thank you… here’s my bags, there’s 16 of them. (Ocado so you hand back the bags and get 10p per bag you return a so much faster to take to the kitchen after years of crates with Asda).

Me too.
If Asda or another company then I unpack the crates into my washing basket and lug it into the kitchen to put away.
always say thank you and make small talk.

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 18/02/2024 13:23

Pack into bags at the door and chat to the driver - normally about the dog who's barked his head off or the cat who's peering at them out the window. Sometimes they'll talk about the weather or the roads or ask if the dog can have a treat too.

Then say thank you, sign the little device thing and say goodbye.

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 18/02/2024 13:24

‘Thank you. Im going to shut you out to keep the heat in’.

This seems so rude to me Blush

Hobbi · 18/02/2024 13:30

I usually mumble my thanks and try to avoid eye contact. I've heard some delivery people are not degree educated.

merryatsea · 18/02/2024 13:33

I mostly use Sainsbury’s and the driver always asks how I am as an opening greeting (they all do it). I have large bags/boxes by the front door and unload into those. It's just small talk, about the weather etc, or checking substituted items are fine. Sometimes they will help and pass things from the crates to me.

Waitrose delivery man (seems to be same) is a bit pushy about bringing it through to the kitchen for me. I don't use a Waitrose delivery much now though.

I haven't used Ocado for ages. They're still delivering in bags? They used to be handily hung in the crates that I recall, so you could just lift them out.

Sgtmajormummy · 18/02/2024 13:53

Over the intercom : “Hello, second floor, there’s a lift.”
In person “Hi. Did you manage to park safely? The traffic’s always heavy on this road. Just leave it here on the doorstep, I’ll see to it. (Stay back crazy dog!)”
Before they go: “This is for you. Thanks, bye!”

€2 tip normally, €5 if it was particularly heavy and I feel guilty for being able bodied but having no inclination to do the shopping myself.

penjil · 18/02/2024 16:22

I've never had groceries delivered. Does the driver have to wait on the doorstep while you empty it all out of the crates and into your own bags/kitchen?

I'd feel pressured to hurry.

Yes they do hence why I just tip it all out as would hate to leave someone at the doorstep waiting for me to unpack everything.

As a delivery driver myself, I often close the door for them as they walk away and tell them I don't want them to let their heat out.
I knownit may seem rude but I personally never mind if they close the door, unless they take ages and it's pissing with rain 😂
