What do you say when your groceries are delivered?

Idly pondering this as I wait for my Sainsburys delivery.

I always say “pop it in the porch and I’ll unload it.” Then empty the crates into big Ikea bags to carry through to the kitchen.

if you get groceries delivered, what do you say and do?

It was quite obvious to me that it was sarcasm. It is especially poignant on MN because many people shake with horror if a tradesperson asks to use their toilet if they’re working in their home for the entire day.

I had a delivery driver ask to use the toilet which I just automatically said was fine without really thinking, it’s near the kitchen but through the house, so I carried on unloading in the kitchen and then when he hadn’t come out for 5 minutes I started thinking (irrationally) a bit silly of me to let an unknown man into my house, he was very big too, oh god what if he’s going to attack me, and then kind of hovered not really knowing what to do and didn’t want to be staring as soon as he came out so kind of hovered in the lounge doorway. He then came out pretty quick and said his thanks and left. Was pretty obvious he’d had a dicky tummy and HAD to go and probably couldn’t have waited (smell but not mess) but still I am not sure what I would say if asked again. I would of course always let a tradesman use facilities. My husband is one and says that often they cannot use facilities in customers houses!

'Hello'
No thanks to the millions of subs (bloody Asda!!)

'Thanks very much have a nice night'

LilBus · 18/02/2024 19:50

awful but I would have said no but mine is upstairs so no way would I have let a strange man in and up my stairs! 😬

EasternStandard · 18/02/2024 19:51

Ocado are very friendly

I say hello, thanks and leave it there in doorway

thanks and here’s x number of bags

Sherrystrull · 18/02/2024 20:09

We've always been very happy with Tesco. I always carry the crates into the kitchen and unload. I wipe the worktops after.
The drivers are lovely. In the summer we give them a can of cold pop as a tip.

FindANewFavouritePlace · 18/02/2024 20:11

Ours brings our shopping into the kitchen. Whilst they’re back and forth to the van, we chat about anything from how their shift is going to sport to our dogs. We put the stuff away whilst we chat and that’s it til the next delivery.

Hibernatalie · 18/02/2024 21:10

They put the crates on the front step and I put it all in the porch, then call the kids to take it though to the kitchen. Then I say thanks and they go.

I didn’t know people tipped. Those who do, how much do you give?

About £3ish

TooBusyGazingAtStarss · 18/02/2024 22:11

We don't tip either but we do all the work, he's just getting the crates out and placing them on the table right next to the van, we do all the carrying and unloading. We don't have cash in the house anyway.

CrunchyCarrot · 18/02/2024 23:16

I say hello and ask them to put the crates on the kitchen worktop (door opens into kitchen) because I have a bad back. They help me unload the crate. Usually some small talk follows. I'm not keen when they are overly intrusive with questions (seems to be some kind of stock script) such as 'what are you doing today?'. I rarely see the same driver twice (if it's Ocado delivering) but Waitrose is often the same people. If it's someone who hasn't been to our street before they will usually complain about it as it's very narrow!

No tipping involved.

Same! It's always quicker to just carry the crates into the kitchen and I'll empty each crate on the worktops at super speed, or tip the frozen stuff out by the freezer so it's ready to go in. I see it as a mini workout.

Agreed the Tesco drivers are always lovely, never met a bad one. Their young drivers are always very polite. I always think if I'm really quick it might help them out and means they get an extra few mins break.

SnarkMode · 18/02/2024 23:37

Sainsbury's driver brings crates up a flight of stairs to the front door (I'm in a tenement). I bring the crate into the kitchen and unload onto the worktop whilst he is downstairs fetching the next crate. Small talk is minimal as they are going up and down the stairs whilst I unload, but obviously always say thank you.

I was always told they categorically cannot accept tips and would refuse incase they were being "mystery shoppered" and got in to trouble so I have never offered a tip.

I'd be happy to let them use the loo, top up flask, get a drink of water though.

Emma2803 · 18/02/2024 23:49

I'm very curious as to why people unload the crates at the front door instead instead of the few extra feet to the kitchen and unload onto a table/ work top etc there?
Is it because they don't want someone walking through their house? Would it not be easier to carry it through yourself and unload it in the kitchen than at.the front door and have to move it all again?
Maybe I have appalling manners 🤔
Some of them offer to carry them in for me which I really appreciate, then I unload onto the island in the kitchen so the crate is empty when he's brought the next one in so can bring the empty out. Otherwise they stack them at the door and I carry them in myself, I doubt they are here any more than 5 minutes all in.

PurpleChrayn · 19/02/2024 00:15

"Thank you for the provisions, bröther. Go well."

BobnLen · 19/02/2024 06:57

I think the unloading at the front door is a relic from Covid days, they always brought them in before that, it just seems to be that's what they do now, I'm not really bothered either way as we only have 2 or 3 crates as there is only 2 of us.

BigDogEnergy · 19/02/2024 07:04

Skillest · 18/02/2024 10:13

Usually "you're half an hour early again"

Fucks me off. I order a 1h time window for a reason. They're never late, but I'd say at least 50% of my deliveries come early.

Asda?

Exactly,, agree completely. In countries where the vast majority of jobs are through the books and employees are paid minimum wage, don't 'import' an economy where employees end up RELYING on tips. just don't.

ChanelNo19EDT · 19/02/2024 07:36

@Skillest Tesco are often early with my delivery, i knew i'd booked between 5 and 7 so I leave work early that day but as I walk, i timed it to be home at 5. I could see the van from 500 metres away and was running up the hill. The guy said to me ''where were you?''

''um AT WORK. Like you''

ohdamnitjanet · 19/02/2024 07:41

IncompleteSenten · 18/02/2024 10:33

I say hello, how are you? they say fine thanks, you? I lie and say doing great thank you (they possibly also lied about being fine). While I stack the crates behind me we exchange some socially expected observations about the weather because silence is apparently considered awkward or rude and weather observations are standard filler, then I hand them the empty crates from the last delivery and say thank you, they say see you next week then I shut the door.

I only tip the person delivering the Christmas shop and it's just a token tenner.

A tenner is a very nice tip 😊

philosoppee · 19/02/2024 07:45

I met my husband through him delivering my shopping.

TooBusyGazingAtStarss · 19/02/2024 08:13

@BounceHighBaby
I like to give them a couple of quid for their time early on a Sunday morning. Don't see how thats an issue. In the pocket it goes. Nobody's gonna know!

HoneyButterPopcorn · 19/02/2024 09:27

I have a regular delivery of loads of very heavy boxes - I give the driver £5 for several very heavy trips and placing the boxes in the hallway. It’s worth it - I couldn’t manage it all.

They will not raise wages whether you tip or not.

Ohhh I've always stood at the front door. Took things out of the crate and put behind he on the floor. Then once they have gone I move it into the kitchen?

Could I be doing it easier?

I do this. They usually say “where do you want them?” - but what does that mean?! Are they offering to come inside my house, walk through to the kitchen with me? Surely not? So I just say “oh here’s great, thank you!”

I just take the stuff out at the front door.
