What do you say when your groceries are delivered?

Idly pondering this as I wait for my Sainsburys delivery.

I always say “pop it in the porch and I’ll unload it.” Then empty the crates into big Ikea bags to carry through to the kitchen.

if you get groceries delivered, what do you say and do?

Doesn't occur to me to tip!

NorthCliffs · 18/02/2024 10:50

Cheery hello, decant crates into washing baskets in the doorway with the 'help' of assorted children, remark about the weather, offer one of the children as an assistant for the day, cheery goodbye.

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 18/02/2024 10:50

I always ask "where"s the rest of it?" Cos every week it blows my mind that for £100 l only get 2 or 3 crates. Then l offer the driver a drink if it's a hot day or a bar of chocolate if cold

surfacedeamon · 18/02/2024 10:51

Usually Hi. Then talk about any substitutions. Then I take the crates to the kitchen and unpack them onto the breakfast bar. Kitchen is next to front door so roughly 10 steps away, not the other side of the house.

iwishiwasonhol · 18/02/2024 10:54

I dont tip the driver i work for a supermarket and they arent supposed to accept any tips ,everything goes into large plastic tubs that i then carry into kitchen ,kitchen roll ,loo roll gets flung over my shoulder into the hall,my wine gets handled very gently ,always get told to slow down love your not on supermarket sweep

HeadsShouldersTitsandArse · 18/02/2024 10:55

I make small talk, ask how their day is/is going. If they have many more stops ect.

although, the last delivery man I had was deaf. He was able to lip read so I still tried to be polite and have a conversation, but his speech was so hard to understand I really struggled and got embarrassed.

but when it comes to unloading I just stack everything up on the sideboard or next to it in a mad rush as they wait for the last crate 😂

DRS1970 · 18/02/2024 10:56

Usually just Hiya, or something similar. Then I carry a crate at a time through the hall into the kitchen, and empty the contents onto the work surfaces, and put it all away after they leave. Then I will highlight any issues, and wish them a good day.

thefamous5 · 18/02/2024 10:58

Mine are delivered to the back door which leads straight to the kitchen so get the kids to unload onto kitchen worktop. As we are unloading one crate the driver goes back and gets the next one.

Just say hello, goodbye and thanks.

Westfacing · 18/02/2024 11:00

What's all this crates business?

Ocado driver bring the bags to the door and I say good morning and exchange the usual social pleasantries; ask him/occasionally her to put them just inside the front door of my flat; thank him and hand back the old bags.

All tickety-boo!

amieloue · 18/02/2024 11:00

Tayegete · 18/02/2024 10:45

We don’t tip out the crates. DH brings the crates in to the kitchen and DC and I everything out and pile it up on the kitchen work top.

Family event 😂😂 I just do it myself.

mitogoshi · 18/02/2024 11:03

Thank you and unload into hall, didn't know they would bring them in this f you aren't disabled. The weather as a conversation if required.

Don't think you are meant to tip at all. It states clearly on the Sainsburys website, not sure about others. I have given a driver a homemade cake (I'd just baked), let them use my toilet and refilled their water bottle on a hot day. There are certainly ways and means to say thanks without money

chattyness · 18/02/2024 11:03

We just say something like hi, how are you doing today, then small talk about the weather, how busy was the road etc (it's around 75 -80 miles to get here) We put a plastic table next to the gate so they can pop the crates on top, then we take them from there to the house and unload on to the kitchen table and counter tops. It's very quick only around 5 minutes & then we say thanks very much see you next time & they're gone. We close the gates, let the dog out and put everything away, easy peasy stress free.

BeyondMyWits · 18/02/2024 11:04

I have a small round "bistro style" table at my kitchen door (I don't do bending ... heart... fainting... they don't like it 😄). They bring the shopping round (I put it inthe delivery notes) and we always chat about how useful it is to have a table there. Unless it is my fairly usual Tesco delivery driver who has built up a "relationship" over the past 20+ years (have had Tesco delivery since dial up modem days!) and we chat about our kids at uni.

megletthesecond · 18/02/2024 11:06

Thank you and quickly unload in my porch so the delivery driver isn't waiting too long.
Usually chat about the weather, roads being busy or not and how their shift is going.

Pretty much every other supermarket got rid of bags

ThePoshUns · 18/02/2024 11:09

I did used to empty the crate at the doorstep into bags/ laundry basket to carry through. But became conscious the delivery person could see straight down my top if they were so inclined as I bent to unload.
I now carry the crate into the kitchen and unload in the table
while they wait outside

YellowSunRays · 18/02/2024 11:09

DS has a part time job as delivery driver whilst at uni. He's been doing it since he was 18.
EVERYONE comments on how young he looks so if you happen to have a young looking driver, please don't say it
😆
You'd be amazed by the number of people who aren't in for their shop.
Also the complaints, eg shopping is wet when it's a full on storm and he's got to bring it from van up driveway to door 🙄
As for tips, very welcome to a uni student 😀
He always offers to bring in shopping for older customers/anyone clearly struggling.
Oh, and shut your dog away please, unless they're friendly.

MissSmiley · 18/02/2024 11:10

I always have the same one or two delivery drivers, they usually bring the crates into the kitchen because I can't lift them, we put the shopping on the worktop and put it away afterwards. One week the guy even helped me with the dishwasher tray that wouldn't go back in 🤣 they are very helpful

FabFebHalfTerm · 18/02/2024 11:14

I just take the crates through to the kitchen and unload onto the kitchen floor/table. Return the empty crate to the driver. It's pretty speedy as I pretty much just tip them out after removing e.g. eggs/lightbulbs and then sort out afterwards.

Why faff about unloading it all into something else first to carry through?

I just say Hi at the start and 'thanks bye' at the end.

Why faff about unloading it all into something else first to carry through?

because not all houses/people are the same??

I can't carry crates. I don't want them to carry them into the kitchen & put them on the floor & I don't have enough work surface to put them on & even if I did, I wouldn't want the dirty crates on there.

its quick & easy to unload at the door into my small baskets (like minicrates) fridge/freezer/storage/pantry, then I can carry them through myself & unpack.

when I first came home from hospital they'd help me unload tgeur crates & put mine in the worktop for me & lift in anything heavy.

Tesco have been amazing. All but a couple of drivers have been absolute stars.

@CurlsLDN I get a rotation of drivers. Some I remember things they've told me so I ask about those things, but other than that I'm a boring middle aged woman who asks what time they started/will finish, have to work the weekend or have other plans etc.

always say a very genuine thank you etc as I'd be fairly fucked if I couldn't get my shopping delivered.

i don't tip. I pay Tesco for the service, they get paid by Tesco to deliver the service.

I would tip at Christmas if I had a regular driver.

happypillsareworking · 18/02/2024 11:16

I don't want them to carry them through to my kitchen either so putting into bags works for me! Don't want muddy boots through my house 🤣

motherofawhirlwind · 18/02/2024 11:17

I unload into washing baskets on the doorstep as it's quicker than bags, bottles of drinks / milk just on the floor by the door. They've usually gone back to the van for a 2nd load whilst I do the 1st one, and then we chat about how their useless Satnav brings them to the bridleway on the wrong side of the house, the weather, etc. I'll worry about how much cleavage I have on show if I've worn a v neck that day (can't currently crouch or kneel, only bend). OH will have started the unpacking.

ilovesooty · 18/02/2024 11:18

If it's Asda it comes in crates and I have bags ready. If it's a driver I haven't had before I ask them to hold the crate up while I unpack as I struggle with bending down.

We might chat about the weather or how many deliveries they have still to do. Most of them like my cats and say hello to them and fuss them.

nokidshere · 18/02/2024 11:21

I open the front door, say 'hi, please could you bring it into the kitchen for me', they do, stack it up & help me empty the crates onto the worktop.

When dh had a heart attack recently Tesco delivery arrived at the same time as the ambulance - chaos. The lovely driver took the shopping into the kitchen, unloaded the crates onto the worktop and put the perishables into the fridge/freezer, then let himself out.

WinterIsGoing · 18/02/2024 11:24

Ranges between tipping on to the floor to others take one item at a time to the kitchen

If customer is old or vulnerable he will take them to the kitchen (or wherever)

Tips wise, he gets a few pound coins, more around Christmas
