Please can somebody explain the hype?

I have friends (I am 50) who were seriously sad when they didn't get concert tickets (not in UK) and others who did, who were practically celebrating.

I don't get it. Don't want to ask for fear of looking like a twit.

For context, I have a 16yo DD and she just rolls her eyes and says wouldn't be caught dead at a TS concert. So no help there.

Oh, ffs. I said she had the face of a mean girl, not a mean face.

How do you get the face of a mean girl? You think mean thoughts. The end.

I don't get the difference
But I have the face that everyone wants to tell their troubles to, so clearly I have a lot of work to do to solve that problem! Must think more mean thoughts 🙄

@ChangeNameagain2 just looked it up, it's 6 In England. I remember dithering about going in 2009.

@BarelyLiterate my ex was under the impression TS only hit was Shake it Off. He doesn't do music though...

so...yeah.

@BarelyLiterate overnight?!

18 years is not overnight!

Perhaps I could have expressed myself more clearly. What I meant was that her popularity has suddenly exploded following a long career as an established artist in both the country & pop genres. That’s what’s unusual.

Josette77 · 12/02/2024 01:03

I love her.

These are my favourite.

And you call me up again just to break me like a promise,
So casually cruel in the name of being honest.

I love her lyrics. 💞

I would say it's grown and grown over 18 years but perhaps no one was expecting the increase in popularity after Folklore, Evermore and Midnights.

ChangeNameagain2 · 12/02/2024 01:07

@Josette77 one of my all time favourite songs, the 10min version obviously! My favourite line is "you kept me like a secret, but I kept you like an oath" that 1 line was what sent me down a rabbit hole of her lyrics.

BarelyLiterate · 12/02/2024 01:09

@BarelyLiterate my ex was under the impression TS only hit was Shake it Off. He doesn't do music though...

And that’s exactly my point. Shake it Off is her only song which was so successful in the UK that it became a massive mainstream hit well known even by people who aren’t fans.

ChangeNameagain2 · 12/02/2024 01:09

Anyone else up this late having a superbowl party because your now sucked into the wold of American football because of her, or just me? 😬

Josette77 · 12/02/2024 01:11

Canadian here and I watch every year but this year I feel extra invested. 😉

Patsykenning · 12/02/2024 01:12

I adore her. I am in my 40s and I haven’t been a proper fan of any music star since I was a teen. I am so grateful to Taylor for giving me that fun and joy again! I always liked her country and pop stuff but her folky albums (particularly songs like Tears Ricochet and Cardigan) brought my fandom to a whole new level. Saw the Eras film at the cinema twice and cannot wait to see the tour live at Wembley. She is so incredibly relatable when she talks about relationships - I wish she’d been around when I was a teen as I needed her!

ChangeNameagain2 · 12/02/2024 01:14

@BarelyLiterate it definitely is not! Love story, bad blood, look what you made me do, blank space, style, everything has changed,22, we are never getting back together off the top of my head.

Patsykenning · 12/02/2024 01:14

Goingtotheyelllowcafetomorrow · 11/02/2024 21:20

I don’t get it either, I mean I don’t dislike her but..meh 🤷🏻‍♀️
Someone once said they imagined she was either the girl at school who was really into horses and a bit geeky or a huge bitch 😬

The misogyny of this sentence. 😩

Patsykenning · 12/02/2024 01:15

Anti hero and Cruel Summer have been huge UK hits too.

BarelyLiterate · 12/02/2024 00:46

It’s odd. Swift has apparently become an overnight sensation, and unquestionably the biggest music star on the planet, in her mid 30s, after a long career and having had only 1 major hit single in the U.K. That’s not your normal musical career trajectory.

I don’t dispute that she’s very talented ; that’s obvious. The overwhelming hype about an established artist at this stage of her career, however, indicates that what we are seeing is something of a fad.

She’s been wildly, consistently popular in the US since she was a teenager, so at least 15 years. I think you’re getting confused with the fact that she went “underground” for a few years due to the Kanye/Kardashian harassment issues and then the pandemic happened. She wasn’t as public for a good 4-5 years, which is why when she came out and started touring again her popularity has exploded.

Also probably overestimating the importance of the UK when it comes to an American singer who has smashed many of their music/album/award records to pieces, including those set by the Beetles.

When you look at figures, I know, but I thought most people were familiar with all the other big hits from Love Story onwards.

i get most of my music from streaming though, haven't done radio for nearly two decades I guess.

night all...if you're staying up for the Super Bowl, I'm looking forward to seeing Usher's set in the morning! Can't beat JLo and Shakira though....

ChangeNameagain2 · 12/02/2024 01:22

@EmmaEmerald he's coming on any min, them I'm giving up!

I think we are going to have to disagree because I suggest that very few of a mainstream R2 / Heart / GHR audience who are not TS fans would recognise any of those songs by the first 2 bars in the way they would with Careless Whisper / Billie Jean / Back for Good / Shape of You etc etc. Or, for that matter, Shake it Off.

ChangeNameagain2 · 12/02/2024 01:31

@BarelyLiterate I think we are going to have to. Those songs were all in the UK charts. I don't even know what those channels/names are that you wrote. I never listen to radio, only Spotify. But if I did it would be cool fm or heart I think it's called. One's that play top 20 type songs. Partial to the ultimate 80s channel tho!

ChangeNameagain2 · 12/02/2024 01:32

Oh just seeing you wrote Heart. She is definitely on that alot as its one of the 2 I would hear in the car.

You are expressing opinions about music but you have never heard of Radio 2??

Time for bed, I think… Goodnight.

BusyMummy001 · 12/02/2024 01:38

Not a fan of her music at all, but she writes it herself, produced a solo album in lockdown and socked it to the managers/record label that shafted her earlier in her career. Admire her acumen over that and her values generally.

Like PPs above, my teens roll their eyes at anything TS but in part that may be because DH is a bit of a fan [cue my own rolling of eyes].

ChangeNameagain2 · 12/02/2024 01:42

@BarelyLiterate I think I would say I'm a bit too young for radio 2. Its more my mums scene. And now that you have wrote it fully, I do recognise it. But no, in my rubbish NI car cool FM is all I usually get, hence Spotify.

DanceForAMomentOrTwo · 12/02/2024 01:43

Heart have Taylor on a lot. Yesterday they played Cruel Summer, I knew you were trouble and blank space. Maybe more, they’re just the ones I can remember.

ChangeNameagain2 · 12/02/2024 01:45

And also, surely anyone is allowed to express there opinions on music? Not everyone is going to like the same stuff, but that's grand. Your 'opinion' on 1 hit single was factually wrong and I just pointed that out.

EconomyClassRockstar · 12/02/2024 02:24

I saw her concert in May and it was fantastic. People from all walks of life, genders, ages, yada yada yada coming together with homemade bracelets and clothes that shimmered. Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it!

pramhelpplease · 12/02/2024 02:46

SummaLuvin · 11/02/2024 21:40

she dated Matty Healy who has done Nazi salutes at his concerts because it's so damn funny, mocked East Asian accents, and spoken about how he enjoys watching extreme porn which degrades black women in a horrendous way - and all this in the space of the last year, he has a long history of being a despicable person. No Taylor didn't do or say these things, but it speaks volumes of what views and comments she tolerates around her.

google her private jet(s) stuff. she is trying to use her billionaire status to intimate a 21yo college student into not publishing publicly available information about it which is legal btw, because it makes her look bad. Not exactly nice girl behaviour.

of course the most important thing for a woman to be is nice
