Please can somebody explain the hype?

I have friends (I am 50) who were seriously sad when they didn't get concert tickets (not in UK) and others who did, who were practically celebrating.

I don't get it. Don't want to ask for fear of looking like a twit.

For context, I have a 16yo DD and she just rolls her eyes and says wouldn't be caught dead at a TS concert. So no help there.

I am neither for or against TS, but no I would never go to the hassle of the hoops people have to jump through to get tickets to see anyone regardless of who they are

i don't think it is probably any different to the mania over the beatles or whoever 'back in the olden days'

But yes I do think it is weird this hysteria of any celebrity and this obsession thing people do where they feel they own a celebrity and their relationships etc. is just plain odd

MermaidMummy06 · 12/02/2024 04:52

A lot of the drama is hype. Limit tickets so it creates a frenzy and exclusivity. TS is about to land here in Aus for her concerts & it's going mental.

Whereas Pink is also here, a performer we've adopted because we love her so much. An equally fantastic performer (I have been). However she does many shows & has in the past added more to meet demand. There's very little overblown hype.

I don't have an opinion on TS but do understand why she's so popular.

No discernible talent and satanic element to her performances.

You need to calm down

@MermaidMummy06

Taylor is doing 150 nights over about 18 months. With logistics of moving her show from place to place, and having rest time for her and her crew, how many more would you like her to do? 😅

You need to calm down

Or stop ingesting those pink pills that come through letterboxes that have a sign 'may hallucinate if you try hard enough'

AutumnCrow · 12/02/2024 05:24

She came onto my radar when she re-recorded all her old catalogue (the 'Taylor's Versions') to take back control of her own compositions. That rather elegant 'fuck you' move, and the work rate involved, while writing and recording new albums, and performing & touring, was pretty impressive.

Theatrefan12 · 12/02/2024 05:50

You can never say anything even slightly critical about TS without the Swifties coming after you.. even on Tattle and that’s saying something

Personally I don’t agree with the “great role model” narrative. Yes she is shrewd and her taking down of Scooter Braun was admirable but I think she is very calculating and comes across with a lot of Mean Girl energy these days. If you are not in her clique or of use to her then I don’t think she would give you the time of day

I would definitely consider Olivia Rodrigo a much better role model for young girls these days than TS

PuddlesPityParty · 12/02/2024 06:08

Hmm does she have great morals though? She never speaks out about relevant things/ political things unless it’s something that directly impacts her and she’s suing a college student!!! Or trying to. Taking a 13 min private jet ride doesn’t seem that moral to me…

thedancingparrot · 12/02/2024 06:27

She has nailed her ‘brand’ - I think that is the key. She has some good, easy listening songs and an image. But like the spice girls, none of them were great singers, the songs were poppy & appealing to a younger audience but they had a popular image many bought into.

Madonna is the same in many ways, nice voice but nothing special but is able to distinguish herself from the crowd.

foxlover47 · 12/02/2024 06:33

I really like her music and I like her style , she comes across as "real "
To me .
My 12 year old isn't a fan she prefers Olivia R.
The Swifty fan base is hugely loyal to her aren't they

TheaBrandt · 12/02/2024 06:58

Remember when dd2 was having a hard time at 13 with bitchy “friends” at school . TS had been through the same at that age but she had written songs about it.

She’d get home from school crying we would listen to Mean loudly and it would make her feel better. Also Best Day a song for her mum “I’m 13 now and don’t know how my friends can be so mean” then describing a day out with her mum when they laughed until she “forgot all their names/ I don’t know who I’m going to talk to now in school / But I had the best day today with you”.

Scoff away but it genuinely helped at the time that someone like that had been through the same thing and come out the other side.

dailyduel · 12/02/2024 06:58

I like some of her music however, it’s in the radio all the time. That could be said for people like Lewi Capaldi and Adele though.

I am 52 and would see her in concert if I could get a ticket. I’d also see Pink and Adele and others. Basically I think it’s brilliant to see these women do so well. I don’t think the music industry is kind to them - by that I mean getting to somewhere likes where TS or Pink are at the moment. Obviously, they’ve got tonnes of cash so the financial reward but actually getting the break.

She is suing a college student because he is STALKING her. She takes private jets everywhere because she is STALKED. She is one of the most stalked women in the world.

I honestly adore her. Going to see her twice this year. Once with my 7yr old. We have bonded so, so much over her music. Sat in her room today, death by 1000 cuts in the background making our friendship bracelets together.

I honestly implore anyone to listen to folklore and evermore. You could just read the lyrics like actual poetry. I have never come across an artist who has the ability to so intricately describe what it feels like to be a woman, how the writings from her diary could literally describe so many different things in life.

I really started to pay attention after Kim and Kanye tried to take her down with the doctored phone call. They way she disappeared for 1yr and came back with Reputation was honestly one of the best/smartest moves I have ever seen, and the confidence it takes to do that!

Her documentary Miss Americana is really good at seeing how her brain works and she writes such amazing songs. Her ability to switch genres is unmatched. And being the only person in history to win the grammy for album of the year speaks for itself.

I made you my temple, my mural, my sky, now I'm begging for footnotes in the story of your life. Drawing hearts in the by lines, always taking up too much space and time, you assume I'm fine, but what would you do if I....

You get it! My DD is utterly obsessed, her room is basically a shrine. And I am too. You either get just how incredible she is, or you don't, but you will one day Grin

He’s not stalking her, posting publicly available information isn’t stalking. Privately owned jets are the least stealthy way of moving around vs hiring jets or commercial.

Tilleuil · 12/02/2024 07:39

My dd used our email addresses as well as her own to try to get tickets for Taylor Swift.
She didn’t get any.
I don’t know much about her but I’ve only heard good things.

quisensoucie · 12/02/2024 07:46

The fact that grown women get hysterical over another person is worrying. Upset because they cannot get tickets to an overpriced show?
With you OP

reluctantbrit · 12/02/2024 07:48

Well, we had The Beatles hysteria, Take That where teens went into mourning when Robbie Williams split up and most likely many more.

DD, also 16, really loves her, she saw the cinema documentary and the Netflix recording of an earlier show.

I am impressed by TS attitude, she is not a pop princess looking cute, she has talent, she does her things and takes control of her work. If you read up on her, lots of what she voices is what young women should listen to instead of following reality TV „stars“.

TheTwirlyPoos · 12/02/2024 07:48

She's doing 152 shows across five continents. Not sure how you could keep just offering more.

I still understand why 'grown women' aren't allowed to get upset

Yeah that’s literally not what’s happening at all 😂 the flight logs are public, he’s just putting it on Twitter. He’s doing it for other rich people with private jets, including Elon musk. It’s called holding people accountable.

PuddlesPityParty · 12/02/2024 07:53

Dunno, I don’t feel either way about her but her following is very cult like. Her songs aren’t anything special and I feel lyrically are on the same level as Olivia Rodrigo songs, which are seen as quite teen angsty. I listen to both don’t get me wrong, but I think TS has had a good PR team which got her to the point she is at 🤷‍♀️ I do think she needs to be held accountable for her private jet usage though - she uses it for very short journeys and if it was any other celeb they would be being called out for it.

"I'm going to ignore all the facts because I feel like she has mean girl energy".

You mean the OR who has had to credit TS on her album as her songs sounded so similar?

TheTwirlyPoos · 12/02/2024 08:02

But she Is being called out for the jet use? And rightly so I think, but I don't know how much more calling out there could be?

She isn’t really; some people are now, but it’s literally only just happening and her swifties certainly aren’t calling her out for it.

TheTwirlyPoos · 12/02/2024 08:10

I disagree, I think there's been a lot about it in the media. Especially when allegedly Travis Scott was more polluting than Taylor last year?
