Do you make the beds before or after the school run?!

Just curious. I like to try and have everything done (dishwasher unloaded and reloaded from breakfast, beds made, toothbrushes put away etc etc) before we leave so that I can come home to a relatively clean flat but it is a MAD stressful rush!

I do the dishwasher and move the washing on while the kids eat breakfast, DH makes the bed while he's getting dressed. I get the kids dressed downstairs. Hairbrushes toothbrushes etc get tidied away when I'm done as they have a box with clothes and everything needed for getting ready for school for the week that lives downstairs.

Then they all head off for work and school and I get myself dressed!

Quornflakegirl · 07/02/2024 12:24

I make mine as soon as I get up and dc do the same. They hate an unmade bed as much as I do.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 07/02/2024 12:26

All before because I go straight to work. The only thing I do when I get home is sort any laundry, vaccum & mop (if needed).

peachgreen · 07/02/2024 12:28

Yes, I try and get the beds made / load of laundry on / dishwasher emptied before we leave if I can. It is always a bit of a rush though, neither DD or I are early risers!

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 07/02/2024 12:30

beds made, toothbrushes put away

How old are your children? How is putting toothbrushes away even a "thing". Isn't it just putting them in a holder that is presumably directly in front of you when brushing your teeth?

Illpickthatup · 07/02/2024 12:34

Why are you making beds? Get the kids to make their own. My 5yo makes hers every morning and opens her blinds and curtains. We also get up earlier than we need to so we're not rushing about.

Farwell · 07/02/2024 12:42

If you don't have work to get to, why do this to yourself? The morning jobs like the dishwasher can be done after you get back from the school run while the kettle boils for the first peaceful cup of tea of the day

School age kids are old enough to at least try to make their beds and to put away their own toothbrush instead of abandoning it somewhere.

As an adult, making my bed etc takes seconds. And is done when I first get up.

Before, one of the best pieces of advice I was given by an uncle as a child was to make sure my bed was made. I was told it helps clear the mind and start the day organised. It genuinely was true for me.

My aunty said the same thing.
I air the bed when I get up and make it before I leave.
It makes the room look smart and tidy (easy and takes minutes)
I always feel better for it.

mitogoshi · 07/02/2024 12:58

Bed is made (by dp) whilst I'm in the shower (he goes first) dc (yes they are adults) never make beds!

It takes seconds, I'd never leave it until after breakfast. Tooth brushes live next to the sink

mitogoshi · 07/02/2024 13:00

Load dishwasher straight from the table then he puts it on... its simple this way and we do this on weekends too though the time is very different

BiffandChip1 · 07/02/2024 13:09

As soon as I get up. I have 3 under 4 and this just works! I'm surprised how many people don't make beds though.

user1492757084 · 07/02/2024 13:30

I like to throw bedding back and allow air and sunlight to freshen them. I make the beds before dinner at night in readiness for a hot water bottle later, before bedtime.

Nonplusultra · 07/02/2024 13:30

I’m a morning person - beds, lunches, hot breakfasts, patience and good humour.. Love to have a neatly made bed to fall into a night when I’m shattered and have just left a pile of dirty dishes waiting in the sink and snarled at the dc to get back into bed.

user1471523870 · 07/02/2024 13:30

Before. Ours gets made at some point between showers and getting dressed (depending on who is doing what and when, between the two of us).
I normally make DS' bed while he's brushing his teeth/washing his face/etc.
Toothbrushes are put away (in the toothbrush holder they got out from, sitting on the sink) from the same person who use them, straight after said use.

What's the point in making beds? You only get in them again

Honestly, life isn't forever, don't waste more of it than necessary on dull domestic shit

Makes me really happy to climb in to a nicely made bed. That’s the point for me!

Also I make my children’s beds because I’m a pretty firm believer in tidy space - tidy mind - I know that I function better in an uncluttered space.

OP - fold them back to air when we all get up - and do a quick whip round to pick up stray PJs / make beds when I get back from drop off.

Favouritefruits · 07/02/2024 14:13

I do all the jobs after the school run, I’m a SAHM so have the time. It’s such a busy time getting the kids dressed and washed in the morning that I wouldn’t want any more stress. I like it to be cal for the children to start the day.

DemBonesDemBones · 07/02/2024 16:25

Hahahahahhaa. Ha.

Intheshadowofthemountain · 07/02/2024 16:28

I stopped making the bed when we stopped using flat sheets and blankets. What is there to actually do with a duvet other than pull it down to the bottom of the bed to allow the bed to air? That must take 3 seconds.

And putting the toothbrushes away where exactly?

Mumsnut · 07/02/2024 16:31

I fold my duvet back to air and plump and tidy the pillows.

Sometimes I make the bed later and sometimes not.

The kids are adults so I don't look

Validus · 07/02/2024 16:38

Make the beds???

I straighten mine ne when I get out of it. The kids are told to sort their own. 😝

superplumb · 07/02/2024 16:40

Usually just before I leave. I air them out first for a couple of hours.

OrangeMarmaladeOnToast · 07/02/2024 16:46

Never, I don't actually like a 'made' bed. To the extent that if I'm presented with a neat one I mess it up! All covers pulled back to air as soon as the person has got up, and I don't think I've ever tried changing a bed before school.

DGPP · 07/02/2024 16:48

What is making beds? And who cares when they’re done? Far too much time on one’s hands

DrasticAction · 07/02/2024 17:44

I don't? It's just duvets and rather than making beds then folding back duvets for the bed and to "breathe" it will breathe anyway... With crumbled duvet

Our country is doomed, i cannot understand how anyone can make it to be an adult and not know how to make a bed. For all those that say it is a waste of time, when you stay in a hotel do you expect the bed to be made when you first enter the room and everyday of your stay ?

I know exactly how to make it, I just have no interest in doing it.

In terms of hotels, I expect it made when I arrive so that I have a sense that the bedding is freshly put on. Thereafter, I couldn't give a monkeys if it's made on a daily basis or not. It's only been me in it so I don't care.
