Do you make the beds before or after the school run?!

Just curious. I like to try and have everything done (dishwasher unloaded and reloaded from breakfast, beds made, toothbrushes put away etc etc) before we leave so that I can come home to a relatively clean flat but it is a MAD stressful rush!

Folded back to air in the morning, takes 2 seconds. Folded back over to look neat some point in the early evening. Also takes 2 seconds. I don't like getting into an unmade bed but it really isn't a significant chore.

OolongTeaDrinker · 07/02/2024 09:49

Usually make them just before bed, unless I go into the bedrooms during the day.

Do the what?

Haha
Pull it up when you get in kid!

DRS1970 · 07/02/2024 09:54

I generally make the bed as soon as we are all up.

You’re gonna hate me. Not only do I make beds every day I also iron the bedding ( 1X single, 1X double and 1X king size ) it’s how i was brought up. My dgm was spotless, as is my mum. I try 😁

U wot?? 😮

Ariela · 07/02/2024 10:01

Let me guess, @Bunbum doesn't have kids?

Beds: each child's responsibility to do their own, we do our own
Tootbrush: ditto
Dishwasher: dirty stuff is put in by the user, when full I will put it on later in the day to take advantage of solar power, emptying: delegated chore - the glasses to go in the high cupboard are left on the counter below, otherwise it's put away.

I iron all the bedding too. But indent change it as often as some people do 😂

Beamur · 07/02/2024 10:04

My Mum would turn in her grave.
I don't iron my bedding and rarely make the bed. I probably only make the bed if I think someone will see it unmade and assume I am a slattern (which I am) but don't need everyone to know that.

PlumpAndGrump · 07/02/2024 10:05

@DappledThings There's ironing bedding after it's been washed before it goes on the bed (not for me but understandable), and then there is ironing it every day again while making the bed as PP said.
I just don't know who has the time 😆

That's not how I read it. I read it as "I make the bed every day and I also iron the bedding when it's been washed". If that assumption was wrong and that poster is actually running the iron over the made up bed that is in indeed absolutely bonkers

My husband is up and out of bed a lot earlier than me 90% of them time, so i 'make' our bed when i get up. In reality this only involves plumping and replacing pillows and pulling the duvet back to air. The kids sometimes make their beds when they get up. If not, I either do it during the day (I WFH) when i pop upstairs for other reasons, or me or husband will do it at night just before they go to bed, so they get into a made bed.
I get the toothbrush thing - and I blame us as parents for not dealing with this! When the kids were younger toothbrushing was such a pain/trauma/fuss, that we did everything to make sure it was done. This involved taking the loaded toothbrush to them and letting them brush their teeth anywhere. therefore they have to be returned to their home in the bathroom. We still do this for them and its a pain. This thread is a reminder to start insisting they do them in the bathroom!

I barely have time to breathe 😂 I'm not doing beds

😅

Mariposistaaa · 07/02/2024 10:14

Everyone has to make their own! And yes, it's done before we all leave the house.

MamPadi · 07/02/2024 10:21

DH or me do ours before leaving the house, DDs do their own (12 & 9 yrs), usually youngest DD doesn't bother but I think that's her problem if she is happy to have her room a mess!
We both have work after the school run so it's not getting done then

NoCloudsAllowed · 07/02/2024 10:24

So people air their beds daily but put damp spitty toothbrushes away in a drawer where the air can't dry them out? Don't they go mouldy?

Personally I not only don't make my bed, I have a policy of not touching a duvet with my hands so I just flip myself in at the end of the day and writhe around until at least 68% of my body is covered.

And as for pyjamas - I get up twice a night to change them and I always wear pants to bed, colour coded according to the day, phase of the moon and whether it's the week for black bin collection.

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 07/02/2024 10:27

I make beds if someone's coming over, usually in a last minute rush just before they're due.

PPTorPDF · 07/02/2024 10:27

Don't make beds here. It's healthier to air them with the covers back so that's what happens here.

TravellingT · 07/02/2024 10:35

I flip them over and make them tidy while airing them out, then after school run I can make them properly. House has to be tidy before I leave so I can clean it when I get back

suki1964 · 07/02/2024 10:35

I just pull the duvet down off the bed to let the bed air during the day whilst at work. When I come in and change out of work clothes, I plump the pillows and throw the duvet back on

Toothbrushes live in the cup on the sink

The only "housework" I do in the mornings is give the bathroom sink and loo a once over and maybe if needed spray the shower

Life is too short

garlictwist · 07/02/2024 10:37

Always make the bed. It takes what, 10 seconds, tops? Also, I am not sure if everyone wanging about about "airing the bed" is sleeping but unless it's in a vacuum then I doubt it's necessary.

pontipinemum · 07/02/2024 10:37

I only have a duvet and pillows, no blankets./ throws/ cushions in the morning I leave the duvet thrown down a bit to let it air, get DS, etc... then throw over the duvet before leaving.

I was in the Cadets from age 12 then the TA until I was 22. It might be from there but I can't leave it undone.

If you accomplish nothing else during the day, at least you have made your day. I hate going into a bed that is undressed.

sHREDDIES19 · 07/02/2024 10:41

The op asked a specific question as to whether people who make their beds do it before or after the school run. If neither applies, no need for people to comment at all and furthermore to be condescending and insinuate that making beds is a pointless waste of ones precious time. You could argue that responding to a post that doesn't relate to you is a waste of time...

sHREDDIES19 · 07/02/2024 10:42

BTW in answer to your question, I have periods where I make the beds and open the windows, and the days I manage that I do feel better! They look scruffy otherwise but then I work from home. If I didn't not sure I would be as bothered.

Kalevala · 07/02/2024 10:44

Making their own bed is a school child's job surely?

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/02/2024 10:44

”make the bed” once a week when linen is changed. Fold duvet back so bed can air during day then pull it up when we get back in. Assumed everyone did the same.
