Do you make the beds before or after the school run?!

Just curious. I like to try and have everything done (dishwasher unloaded and reloaded from breakfast, beds made, toothbrushes put away etc etc) before we leave so that I can come home to a relatively clean flat but it is a MAD stressful rush!

We don’t have breakfast at home on office days and don’t unload the dishwasher in the morning.
Beds are aired or have a cat in them. Not made anyway.
Toothbrushes live out.

tealweasel · 07/02/2024 10:46

I pull the duvet back to air the bed before I go downstairs in the morning (and open the window to air the room) and then pull it back over and close the window before I get dressed, usually 45 mins or so later. All done before I leave the house for work. Takes less than a minute and the place looks neater for doing so.

gluenotsoup · 07/02/2024 10:46

They get made before I leave for work, sometimes that’s before the school run, sometimes after. They get done daily, aired for a bit, sheets smoothed out, hospital corners on the top sheet (I know, I can’t help it 😬😂) duvet shaken, pillows plumped, blankets and cushions placed.
Toothbrushes have to be rinsed after use and put in the cabinet above the sink. I hate the idea of people using the bathroom and washing hands etc with the toothbrush still out and hanging around and bits of dust and bacteria getting on them.

Cheeesus · 07/02/2024 10:47

I might do mine mid morning if I go back in there. But usually I just come back and get straight into work.

RecycleMePlease · 07/02/2024 10:48

I pull the cover over when I get up, so the cats don't leave twigs in the bed.

The kids generally forget, so they don't get made at all (unless it's a cold night, then I make it when I turn the heated underblanket on so it all warms up nicely).

notacooldad · 07/02/2024 10:53

What's the point in making beds? You only get in them again
what’s the point of dusting, it’ll only get dusty again
whats the point in hoovering, it’ll only need doing again.
Whats the point in putting things away it’ll only be used again.
of course there’s a point.
most people have quilts. It takes seconds to straighten out a bed. It makes the room look cared for and it’s nice to get in a made bed.

I guess they brush their teeth in other rooms, eg we brush our kids’ teeth in bedrooms. Yes ideally they would not swallow toothpaste and would rinse afterwards but it’s a win that their teeth are even being brushed at the moment tbh

Ah ok, this makes sense now

My DDs are adults now but I did the beds after. Breakfast things in the dishwasher first, bedding folded back to air the bed. I taught my DDs to pull the duvet down to the foot of the bed when they got out of bed from an early age.

If you prefer the beds made first then make it part of their morning routine. Not like a 5 star hotel, just straighten the duvet /sheets when the get up. Then the beds will just need a quick tidy when you choose to during the day.

soupfiend · 07/02/2024 11:03

Dusty toothbrushes!!!

Ive heard it all now!

TheBayLady · 07/02/2024 11:06

Our country is doomed, i cannot understand how anyone can make it to be an adult and not know how to make a bed. For all those that say it is a waste of time, when you stay in a hotel do you expect the bed to be made when you first enter the room and everyday of your stay ?

TheMainCharacter · 07/02/2024 11:10

Before.
I pull the duvet back to air when I get out of it, then make it properly just before I leave the house. If the bed is made the whole room feels tidier.

There are people who say they don’t make the bed because it’s healthier to let it air, but they do pull duvet back and straighten it up a bit which still counts as making it really. Then there are people who don’t make the bed but who just leave it all in whatever tangled mess they slide out of (DP, dc1, dc4) and it’s not getting aired like that!

I put the younger dc’s toothbrushes away before leaving too, the dc rinse them and leave them on the sink but they live somewhere they can’t reach so I put them up there. Everyone else just does theirs as they use it.

Sorry I may have titled it wrong, title implies that I am solely talking about bed making but I do mean the other small domestic type things that need doing in the morning when you have kids!

I am definitely all for making the bed. I can’t stand getting into a messy looking bed and personally feel it’s a good habit to teach the kids, although I understand it may seem silly to others.

I am clearly aiming this at SAHP’s or those WFH. Not just assuming that everybody who does the school run swans off back home after!

Just curious that’s all, it’s a nice feeling coming back and the beds are made, no dishes are waiting for you etc!

I’ve always hated tidying up and cleaning, I do it (all the bloody time) but hate it. So always keen to hear other people’s tips on how to keep a place clean and organized (especially with young children around), without spending hours on end doing it.

Let your beds breathe... it's a good reason not to make them

Anjo2011 · 07/02/2024 11:26

Our bed aired and then made when I’m back from school run. Kids do their own thing , eldest makes hers, youngest couldn’t care less.

Bunbum · 07/02/2024 11:28

@sHREDDIES19 perfectly put!

I'd love to have the entire house clean and tidy when I get back from the school run, but we are up at 6:15 out by 7am no way in hell I'm giving up a cup of tea and a shower to make everyone's beds. And I'm definitely not getting up any earlier!

muckymayhem · 07/02/2024 11:30

Oh, and to answer the question - I do it later! At some point.

Walker1178 · 07/02/2024 11:36

I’m with you OP, I’ll always do a quick whip around to make sure everything is nice and tidy before I leave the house or go to bed.

W0tnow · 07/02/2024 11:40

When the kids were old enough they had to make their bed and have a tidy room before we left. Breakfast cleared away was by me. I hate coming home to a messy kitchen.

I had a non negotiable no TV in the morning rule, which I think helps enormously.

mummydoris2006 · 07/02/2024 11:54

@Timeisallwehave I always make my bed and I suffer quite badly with depression and anxiety some days. On those days when I feel down in myself and frustrated I can always say that I accomplished at least one thing that day, making my bed!

goodnessmeits2024 · 07/02/2024 11:56

What was that....making beds you say Grin

PurpleBugz · 07/02/2024 11:57

Haha. I used to get so much criticism of how I made my bed as a child. What I do now would not meet standards it takes 5 seconds and involves flapping the duvet in the air so it's straight (ish) and walking away. I do it as soon as I'm up before I get dressed

Paw2024 · 07/02/2024 11:59

I don't generally make the bed in that sort of way but I fold back the duvet to air it, open the window and flip the pillows over

CactusMactus · 07/02/2024 12:09

I prefer to air my beds on a daily basis - it's quite simple if you know how... just throw the duvet off the bed and leave the room. My kids have a natural ability here too!
Oh and I prefer to air dry my toothbrush - again, quite simple but maybe I'll put an insta 'how to guide' up....

Where is anybody saying they don't know how to make a bed?
