Do you make the beds before or after the school run?!

Just curious. I like to try and have everything done (dishwasher unloaded and reloaded from breakfast, beds made, toothbrushes put away etc etc) before we leave so that I can come home to a relatively clean flat but it is a MAD stressful rush!

OP posts:

Do people have several electric toothbrushes upstairs and downstairs then? Where would you put them ‘away’?

mondaytosunday · 07/02/2024 08:51

What, you're supposed to 'make the beds'??🤪

Hermittrismegistus · 07/02/2024 08:52

I fold back the duvet completely so that the sheet is exposed and the mattress can air out throughout the day.

Psychoticbreak · 07/02/2024 08:55

I could not get into an unmade bed. Every morning I get up, air the bed while showering, then make the bed fully including my pillows and throws. The kids have been tauhgt to do it from small too so they do the same, then windows get cracked open while we all have breakfasts and coffees and things and closed before leaving for school and work. I would be twitchy all day at work if I thought the bed was not perfectly made up. Takes no time to do.

helpfulperson · 07/02/2024 08:58

Sometimes women are their own worst enemies creating expectations on themselves. Do you partners ever make the beds?

Tessisme · 07/02/2024 09:00

I was almost scared to open this thread to find everyone dutifully making their beds every day and making me feel a bit useless. I'm glad there are at least a few people like me who don't. I do feel some guilt though😆

Looneytune253 · 07/02/2024 09:01

I don't understand the question? Surely you just make your bed as you get out of it, I can't see any other logical way. It doesn't actually take long. And putting toothbrushes away??? Surely you do that as it leaves your hand after brushing?!? Post makes no sense, why would you leave things till later that take seconds (or less) unless you aren't bothering at all

soupfiend · 07/02/2024 09:02

Please can someone tell me what putting toothbrushes away is. This is killing me!

ToWorkOrNotToWork · 07/02/2024 09:03

After! Fold back covers before work to let them air. If I’m wfh then at lunch otherwise end of day. Always thought it’s good to let air in, no?

I guess they brush their teeth in other rooms, eg we brush our kids’ teeth in bedrooms. Yes ideally they would not swallow toothpaste and would rinse afterwards but it’s a win that their teeth are even being brushed at the moment tbh

Grumpynan · 07/02/2024 09:06

It’s not exactly a hard job these days ?, no school runs any more and I use to work from home ( very unheard of those days )

3 children - I would get up turn bed back, wash / dress / coffee / make pack lunches get kids up if not already up, breakfast for kids whilst I got on . Whilst they cleaned teeth / dressed etc I would clean up breakfast and get laundry on the line / airer . Back upstairs , check teeth done etc wipe round bathroom , do hair kids and mine, throw on a bit of makeup. Running short of time by now ! But I only lived 5 minutes walk from school.

i liked to get all my chores done before school, I would get back through the front door at 9 ( school started 8.50 ) house tidy / clean ish . I could pour out another cup of coffee and grab a slice of toast and be at my desk by 9.10 to start work.

I hate a bed not made,

ToWorkOrNotToWork · 07/02/2024 09:07

@soupfiend we put the toothbrushes into the bathroom cabinet … they get a proper clean each week but I don’t like the idea of them getting dusty …

idontlikealdi · 07/02/2024 09:08

I fold back the duvet and give it a shake, plump the pillows before I get back in it at night. Kids
Can do their own if they are so inclined.

Toothbrushes live in pots by the sinks and go back there after brushing.

TheChosenTwo · 07/02/2024 09:08

I just make mine when I get out of it (dh gets up before me) and that’s it. When I say ‘make it’ though I just mean throw the duvet back over the top and square it up a bit. I don’t have an excess of cushions or blankets or anything decorative that some people have, it takes me approx 15 seconds.
As for the dc’s beds, they only get made when the cleaner comes! I don’t care, if they choose to have a scruffy bed that’s their business.

Wictc · 07/02/2024 09:08

Even my 2yr old can put their toothbrush back in the holder. To people have time to burn in the morning? Don’t you have a job?!

CricketWhites1 · 07/02/2024 09:09

The people who don't makes their beds are generally the sort of people who live in messy houses

OP - I do it within 15 mins of getting up. I'll also put a wash on, unload the dishwasher and maybe set the robot Hoover going

But I prefer my house to be nice and tidy as then I feel better. We're all different I suppose

PuttingDownRoots · 07/02/2024 09:22

Aren't you supposed to air a bed before making it?

(I wish the Army had taught DH basic tidiness skills! I have to remind him everyday to do something as simple as opening the blinds.)

PassionateEel · 07/02/2024 09:26

All usually done before leaving. The DC all make their own beds and put their toothbrushes away (in a drawer in the bathroom rather than left at the side of the sink for whoever asked about it) they help to unload the dishwasher and put their own breakfast things in it too.

What's the point in making beds? You only get in them again
Having the house tidy calms my mind. Sleep has a huge effect on my mental health, when I walk into my room to go to sleep if it's messy I feel wound up and stressed and don't sleep well. It takes seconds to straighten the bed but makes a huge difference for me.

Honestly, life isn't forever, don't waste more of it than necessary on dull domestic shit
Using some of my time to do the dull domestic shit means I waste far less of my life feeling depressed with a brain that is too paralysed by feeling overwhelmed to enjoy or do very much at all.

bluesky45 · 07/02/2024 09:30

After. On the days I'm at home and don't have to dash out the door to breakfast club and everything is a mad rush, I like our mornings to be calmer. Why would you make it stressful and not spend any time with your kids before school just so you don't have to make the beds when you get in and have 6hrs to do it?

Psychoticbreak · 07/02/2024 09:30

My recent ex did. Up and make the bed and start on your day. He (bless him) would try to make the bed in my house when here but I would always remake it. He tried though!

Not true - my house is very tidy. I make my own bed as I don't like getting into an unmade bed but I don't bother with the kids beds - up to them, they can if they want to (they don't!).

mindutopia · 07/02/2024 09:41

I only make the beds if we have house guests and they will for some wild reason be upstairs near our bedrooms (our spare room is not in the main upstairs bedroom bit of the house). That happens about once every 2 years. 😂 After the school run, I'm at work.

Sally2791 · 07/02/2024 09:43

None of that business

Zoflorabore · 07/02/2024 09:44

You’re gonna hate me. Not only do I make beds every day I also iron the bedding ( 1X single, 1X double and 1X king size ) it’s how i was brought up. My dgm was spotless, as is my mum. I try 😁

Daffodilsandsunshine · 07/02/2024 09:44

We all make our own beds (or rather the DC haphazardly throw the duvets back over). Dishes IN the dishwasher, not on the side.
I do make them all put out their stuff by the front door the night before so there's less of a mad "where's my schoolbag/shoes/sports kit/coat?" bunfight as we all head out. 😵‍💫
