Lesser Known 90s Song that You Like

MuddledMadge · 26/01/2024 11:58

Following on from the success of the 80s song thread, I thought I'd start one for 90s songs.

I'm thinking about songs that aren't really played much now, but also songs that maybe didn't get the attention they deserved at the time even though they're brilliant songs.

Looking forward to hearing everyone's suggestions. Smile

The Distance by Cake. I still listen to it now, my kids thought it was a new release! It doesn't sound dated IMO.

It did pretty well in the UK in the mid 90s, particularly in the alternative chart, but never made it that big.

Yes! Love that song. Cake and stone temple pilots are both big bands of the 90s that are still underrated imo.

I moved down to London when I was 17/18 so 97/98. I worked in a cinema (an independent artsy one, not an Odean) with the girl singer from Kenickie and someone who was going out with someone from St Etienne. I was massively into trip hop and I only really knew She’s on the Phone. I don’t think they were too impressed with me, this uncultured, uncool northerner they were forced to spend time with.

Gold Against the Soul - manic Street Preachers

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 26/01/2024 19:14

I’ve just looked Kenickie up and clearly I don’t know anything because there’s three female singers 😂 The dark haired one. She was actually a bit nicer than the girl going out with Bob from St Etienne. She talked about going on Top of the Pops but I didn’t have a clue.

Oh god, I've just re-read my previous post and realised to my horror I confused Echobelly and Belly. I used to be so scathing of anyone who did that in the 90s. Anyway, I love them both.

Also now adding:

Your Ghost - Kristin Hersh
I Kissed A Girl - Jill Sobule (nothing to do with the Katy Perry song)
You're in the Air - REM (not an obscure band but not many people know this one)
Susan's House - The Eels
Holes - Mercury Rev
Summertime- The Sundays
