Lesser Known 90s Song that You Like

MuddledMadge · 26/01/2024 11:58

Following on from the success of the 80s song thread, I thought I'd start one for 90s songs.

I'm thinking about songs that aren't really played much now, but also songs that maybe didn't get the attention they deserved at the time even though they're brilliant songs.

Looking forward to hearing everyone's suggestions. Smile

Girl in a Jigsaw puzzle - The Katydids
Careful -Horse McDonald
Northern Uproar -from a window ( a very local band to me, one of the members died quite horribly about 10 years ago).

I worked in a record shop from 93-99 - so got to hear a lot of things that really didn't become massive hits. I also bought a lot of albums on the basis of one hit wonders Grin. (And rarely listened to them again).

Smile by the supernaturals. It screams IVE FINISHED MY GCSES to me 😆

I used to love Five Star, when I speak about them no one knows who I’m talking about.
very similar to Jackson 5 but from Romford 😁 very worth searching for on YouTube!

I was always amazed that their parents called one of them Doris and one of them Stedman! Such wildly different styles of name.

Deeply Dippy by Right Said Fred.

I bloody loved that song.

So did I

ScrambledSmegs · 26/01/2024 14:26

The Distance by Cake. I still listen to it now, my kids thought it was a new release! It doesn't sound dated IMO.

It did pretty well in the UK in the mid 90s, particularly in the alternative chart, but never made it that big.

5 Star probably belong on the 80s thread- my best friend used to fancy Stedman. Grin
I remember System Addict, and Rain or Shine, they were pretty big hits at the time.

I do remember Five Star, although they were more 80s. What I really remember which nobody else does, and I have mentioned this to friends so they will know who I am if they see this, is a photo story in a teen mag, probably Jackie, in which a girl loved Five Star and got asked out on a date by one of them but the plot required her to not know who he was even though she loved his music so if I remember correctly the story had to give her a strict parent who wouldn't let her have posters up (or, presumably, watch TV or look at record covers). Does anyone else remember this?

This just squeezes in I think because it was released in 1999 - We're Going Out, by Younger Younger 28s.
"Lipstick, cigarettes, packet of three, we're going out"
The video is just a massive nostalgia fest for me - the hair! the make-up! the clothes!

My heart, my head, my fashion and my spotify playlists are all still firmly in the 90s.

I agree with so many of the songs already mentioned. I keep thinking, that's not obscure, I play it all the time, then realise I might be one of a few people who does.

Others which come to mind are:

Monday Morning 5:19 - Rialto
The Way - Fastball
Sixty Mile Smile - 3 Colours Red
Men-An-Tol - The Levellers
I Believe - Booth and the Bad Angel
Breathe (a little deeper) - Blameless
Feed the Tree - Echobelly

I'm sure there are more. I'll be back to this thread!

Also waving to fellow Gene fans.

The Whole of the Moon Safari album by Air

Gorgeous

I used to play that so much on car journeys that my daughter requested it at the school disco aged about 6. Needless to say they did not have it.

Totally agree with this, one of the best albums ever.
All I Need and You Make It Easy ... what a beautiful voice and gorgeous melodies.

They are touring this year and performing the whole album from start to finish.
Also re-releasing the album with some forgotten tracks added.

Crispsandwichrock · 26/01/2024 15:02

I think that was a dream, Silversimca!

Bloody loved the 90s

Loved this song so much. It was on the Xmas top of the pops and I remember recording the whole thing on video just for that one song 🤣

Lwrenagain · 26/01/2024 15:08

@DesignforLife manics fan? 😁❤
Also, this picture is to make you smile!

(I was mentioning something about a 90s disco on another thread so I was googling 90s stuff and this picture just made me so cheerful!)
