Lesser Known 90s Song that You Like

Following on from the success of the 80s song thread, I thought I'd start one for 90s songs.

I'm thinking about songs that aren't really played much now, but also songs that maybe didn't get the attention they deserved at the time even though they're brilliant songs.

Looking forward to hearing everyone's suggestions. Smile

Unsure if this is little known. I spent the mid nineties pregnant and up to my ears in babies and toddlers so missed it first time round. But I have recently come to love Yes by McAlmont and Butler.

I may even add it to my funeral song list (not that I'm planning to go anytime soon). It's gorgeous

Yes - McAlmont & Butler

Yes (full version) - McAlmont & Butler (1995)Goosebumps. Every time.

Tomorrow - James is another one. The only song that ever seems to get played is "Sit Down" which, IMO, is not one of their best.

I think James' stuff was better pre-Sit Down. Their first two albums were amazing then they went a bit generic imo. I came on to say "Just Hip" by James but checked and that came out in 1986?!? Fuck! Am so old!!!!

Another Gene fan here! My favourite is Where Are They Now? Also loved Mansun.

Gigolo Aunts - Where I find my heaven
Marion - Sleep
The Pogues - Thousands are sailing
Cake - Short skirt/long jacket
Something happens - Parachute
Milltown Brothers - Which way should I jump
Menswear - Sleeping in

Anyone remember Gary Crowley's show on GLR (now BBC London)? Heard so many new bands on that.

@Whatnousername

OMG! Thank you so much. I had forgotten about Grey Cells Green but it is better. I love that song

The whole vibe of that video pogoing around in a psychedelic coloured mosh pit with lads with long floppy hair and lumberjack shirts sums up my early 90s in Brum.

Raahh · 27/01/2024 18:06

I was never really a big dance fan, but due to my job, listened to everything, Trance was big in the mid 90s
I loved
Jam and Spoon - Find Me(Odyssey to Anyoona) and Right in the Night.

There was a lot of very different music around at the time, because whilst people were coming in buying that, Riverdance was massive Grin.

SerendipityJane · 27/01/2024 18:17

All About Eve - Touched by Jesus

OmegaAmigo · 27/01/2024 18:38

L.S.I - The Shamen
I believe - Happy Clappers
Open Up - Leftfield

In fact, I love everything by The Shamen.

I would say it's well known. Was a pretty big hit when released, think it got to about no.5 in the charts, and it's been a radio staple (in the UK at least) ever since.

Adding Oriole to that list

Great song!

although one of their recent songs rather than 90s. God, I'm a pedantic nerd.

You by Ten Sharp.

This would have been my choice too!

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 27/01/2024 20:04

I’ve no idea! Was she really? It defintely wasn’t her I worked with. It was the dark haired one. It was a very artsy place, everyone had a side gig of music or art or theatre. Or just incredibly cool. I really didn’t belong there. I also worked at the record shop next door and they were also the same, just incredibly cool and I was massively intimidated by all of them.

It was the dark haired one. I think she was a friend of the girl going out with Bob from St Etienne and was just doing a few shifts. Everyone was enthralled by her stint on Top of the Pops , but in an ironic kind of way, obviously.

How did I manage that? Pedantic is good. Grin Let me substitute Omerta.

I quoted someone saying Independent Love Sing on this thread too!
I must love that song Smile

Doseagullstasteoffish · 27/01/2024 22:01

Loads of my favourites have already been mentioned so I’ll add:

Fantasy - The Levellers
Follow you Down - Gin Blossoms
High Hopes - Shed Seven (who I finally got to meet a few weeks ago and were the nicest bunch despite being incredibly hungover!)

Delighted to see Monday Morning 5:19 and Breathe (A Little Deeper) mentioned too!

Yes the blond one in the middle is Lauren Laverne :-)

Horrorqueen81 · 28/01/2024 07:59

The Jagged Little Pill album by Alanis Morrissette was my sound track to the 90’s. Still love it
also anything by Pulp

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 28/01/2024 08:33

Fantastic thread and so many memories being triggered by the songs.

Ash Oh Yeah takes me back to driving my first car on a summer's day with the window down and the music up.

Longpigs She Said to the dancefloor of our favourite nightclub.

And I still know all the words to Ladykillers!

My contribution is White Town Your Woman, all but forgotten until it was sampled recently.

Lurker85 · 28/01/2024 09:25

Same! Peps me up for work on the way back from the school run even now 😂

WinkyTinky · 28/01/2024 10:09

@GorgeousLadyofWrestling My claim to Kenickie fame is that Lauren and Marie were in the year below me at college. Lauren wandered around the corridors in a typically cool 90s grungy mopey shoegazey way, and I can't believe she's doing all the stuff she does today!

WinkyTinky · 28/01/2024 10:13

The Auteurs - Lenny Valentino.

I don't know ANYONE ELSE who know this song. I'm hoping someone will come along here!

munchbunch12 · 28/01/2024 10:45

Hey Jealousy the the Gin Blossoms
Riverflow by the Levellers
