Do you look your age ?

Not wishing to brag, but I often feel I could pass for 5 - 10 years younger. I've never asked anybody this question and I'm purely using the judgement of my own eyes. If I go back in time 39 years to when my late Dad was the same age as I am now (53), I see a man in early middle age with a full head of black hair - some greying - but a rather lined face and seemingly expanding ears! I, on the other hand, have a lot more grey hair than he did but a much denser texture and no obvious facial lines. I've always had bags under my eyes but not Peter Woods proportions! My sister is 61 but she could pass for late 40s, in my opinion.

Maybe there's no right or right or wrong answer. I could have a skewed personal perception or perhaps we're all living longer and I'm seeing that played out at close quarters.

PS. The old man had, along with Mum, raised seven children by the time he was my age whereas I have no children. So, no parental stress!

I look late 30s, I'm mid 40s. People always assume I had my DC really young when they find out they're all late teens early 20s.

I put it down to my Mediterranean complexion, my mum and her dad are the same, not too many wrinkles and very few grey hairs.

ReflectiveRogue1001 · 22/01/2024 20:05

I look about 107.

I'm 54

LoobyDop · 22/01/2024 20:06

Pointless circular question. You are the age you are, therefore your age looks like you do.

MaryActsLikeSheDontCare · 22/01/2024 20:11

I think I look older than I am. I know this because of various things colleagues who wouldn’t know my age have said to me, eg discussing menopause symptoms even though I’m not quite there yet.

It used to bother me. It doesn’t anymore.

bakewellbride · 22/01/2024 20:13

I'm 34 and think I look perhaps a few years younger but I'm incredibly boring and haven't touched a drop of alcohol in 7 years!

MrTiddlesTheCat · 22/01/2024 20:15

Most people think I'm kidding when I say I'm 51 because they think I'm around 40. I think they all need to go to specsavers because I think I look about 70.

KirstenBlest · 22/01/2024 20:16

I look much older. I know this because someone told me.
Until then I thought I looked a bit younger.

MissTrip82 · 22/01/2024 20:16

Probably, almost everybody does.

In nearly two decades of meeting thousands of strangers whose ages I know for professional reasons, I’ve not once seen anyone who looks ten years younger than they are. Not once. Not ever.

Its never occurred to me than when people say they’re surprised at how old you are
or that you look younger that they’re being anything other than polite. Mumsnet however is full of 75 year olds without a single wrinkle.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 22/01/2024 20:19

I absolutely look my age and a bit more probably. The only people who think I look younger are my patients who’s average age is 80+ 🤣

I worked nights for years which aged me massively.

I don’t care, I am who I am. I’ve never been ‘pretty’ so not lost anything. I don’t care anymore about my looks which is really liberating.

Ladyof2022 · 22/01/2024 20:19

I am 65 but because I am so fat I have no wrinkles in my face whatsoever. As well as that I do not have a single grey hair on my head and that's without ever dyeing it, just luck.

I also have quite a childish sense of humour and I've never had any kids or been married. All these things together combined most people when asked to guess think I'm about 48.

Midnlghtrain · 22/01/2024 20:20

I always thought I sort of just looked my age, until someone I'd not met face to face before at work until last week asked me when I'd be leaving the apprenticeship programme. I'm 30 😂

Blueeyedmale · 22/01/2024 20:21

I follow my dad for my younger looking skin I'm 43 but can pass for 10 years younger but I remember this caught up with my dad in his late 40,s.so enjoy it while it lasts sadly we all age no mostirizer and serum won't stop me getting old might slow it down but it's coming

Rosiiee · 22/01/2024 20:21

I’m 30 in a few weeks and look early/mid-twenties. It’s honestly so frustrating and I always try to make myself look older. It’s frustrating because I feel like people are judging me when they see me with my kids and I also have a serious job and it’s hard for people to take me seriously/look at me as a figure of authority. I know I’ll be grateful for my young looks later on in life but right now it’s just holding me back I feel.

I think that I used to look younger, but I've caught up and look my age now.

sqcrispsal · 22/01/2024 20:22

Literally everyone thinks they look younger than their age, everyone. Even people who have aged badly. I've yet to see anyone who actually looks younger than their biological age, some look better, less worn of course but they still look their age, even movies stars look their age.

BarelyLiterate · 22/01/2024 20:23

In some ways yes, in others not so much.

The way the genetic lottery worked out was that I got the good hair & skin genes. My hair is thick, full wavy, and I have had appreciative comments about it throughout my life. I have looked after it rather than abusing it with strong chemicals & heat treatments - largely because I haven’t needed them for it to look good. My skin is in good condition for my age with very few wrinkles. Again, I have always looked after it. No sunbeds or tanning for me.

I wasn’t so lucky with my teeth, which are and have always been crap.

PicklesAndTequila · 22/01/2024 20:24

I absolutely look my age, and then some.
It doesn't remotely bother me.

Adrifting · 22/01/2024 20:24

No, I look 5-10 years older than my age.

sqcrispsal · 22/01/2024 20:25

@DustyMaiden Somewhere around 55-58 Its hard to tell from that photo as we can't see your skin really as its very blurry.

whiteshutters · 22/01/2024 20:27

@DustyMaiden that's from 2020?

DappledThings · 22/01/2024 20:27

No idea. I think so. But I'm a terrible guesser of age in anyone else so no idea what anyone of any age is meant to look like!

I used to look younger than my age by quite a bit. That wasn't a compliment though, more that I seemed quite naive I think. Pretty sure I now look the 44 that I am.

When I was 25 a stranger asked my parents (who were viewing a house in the area at the time) if I would be going to the grammar school for my GCSEs.

Soccermumamir · 22/01/2024 20:28

I turned 40 end of last year and everyone thought I was turning 30 lol My mum looks 10 years younger than she is and when my dad was here he also looked younger than he was. Hoping it continues 🙂

verdenate · 22/01/2024 20:28

I think I look about my age (44) but the affluent, less stressed, non-smoking, non-drinking version of it. I have very few grey hairs, and a few fine wrinkles. I have neglected my self care a bit with young dc, but I'd look a little younger I think with more hair dye, yoga and face treatments.

RunnerDown · 22/01/2024 20:29

I’m in my Sixties and reasonably slim. Unfortunately that means my face is also thin . I have always had dark shadows under my eyes and I have eye bags now. So I definitely look my age - if not a bit older.
My hair is ok so I look younger from a distance 🤣
