Do you look your age ?

Not wishing to brag, but I often feel I could pass for 5 - 10 years younger. I've never asked anybody this question and I'm purely using the judgement of my own eyes. If I go back in time 39 years to when my late Dad was the same age as I am now (53), I see a man in early middle age with a full head of black hair - some greying - but a rather lined face and seemingly expanding ears! I, on the other hand, have a lot more grey hair than he did but a much denser texture and no obvious facial lines. I've always had bags under my eyes but not Peter Woods proportions! My sister is 61 but she could pass for late 40s, in my opinion.

Maybe there's no right or right or wrong answer. I could have a skewed personal perception or perhaps we're all living longer and I'm seeing that played out at close quarters.

PS. The old man had, along with Mum, raised seven children by the time he was my age whereas I have no children. So, no parental stress!

In my head I’m still about 27 so photos of middle aged me are horrifying to me.

I probably look about my age - which I’m not super in to - so I just don’t look too often and maintain the 27 year old delusion…

mumofthemonsters808 · 22/01/2024 21:13

I look my age and so does everybody I know, I’m yet to meet anyone who shocks me when their biological age is revealed.Im not being mean I genuinely don’t understand where these people who look decades younger live.

Mybootsare · 22/01/2024 21:14

I find it so weird people saying they don’t know anyone who looks younger? I know plenty of people apart from myself who look younger and other people comment on it all the time whether about me or others. Or even with celebrities there’s several the same age who look way younger /older in comparison. Surely you don’t think we all age the same?

When I was at uni a guy said to my friend “your friend doesn’t look old enough to be at uni” I was mortified because I’d taken a gap year and was actually older than both the guy who said it and my friend. I have no idea why he said it to my friend and not to me. It was like he really believed I was a silly school kid lol

When I worked in high schools, I’d get mistaken for a 6th former sometimes or in primary schools someone on work experience from a high school. I was late 20s

I’ve had (predatory) men my own age show disappointment once they pursued me and found out my true age as they were clearly looking for a younger woman.

When I’d go out in my early 20s, the same people in our group would get asked for ID - I was one of them.

I also get ID’d now and again for grocery deliveries - you need to be 18 to accept online food shops apparently.

I have friends who look younger than me too and once went to view a flat share with two women slightly older than me who looked way younger.

It was quite embarrassing as a teen/early 20s women to get mistaken for being younger but the older I get it I have to say it’s more of a compliment.

But looking young doesn’t necessarily mean looking good btw. Some days I look quite dishevelled, tired and messy. I have a lot of friends my age who look their age and always look extremely polished.

TheOGCCL · 22/01/2024 21:14

I think it’s hard to judge. Even people saying people say they look younger, because everyone has their own ideas about what an age looks like. I also think people overflatter a lot, or are just a bit silly.

Its especially hard now everyone wears similar clothes.

There are many instances where I see someone in the paper who is younger than me but doesn’t in my opinion look it, but again that’s only my own perspective and there might be plenty of people who are that same age and look a lot younger. How do you get that average?

Gowlett · 22/01/2024 21:15

I looked younger. Until peri-menopause. Hagsville now!

Mairzydotes · 22/01/2024 21:17

I've been told I look younger throughout the years. It's less frequent now , although people are usually surprised when find out I have an 18 year old .
I've always protected my skin from the sun , as have many my age and it shows.

My hands look old . They are wrinkly with misshapen knuckle. They say one can always tell a woman's age by her hands . But nobody looks at the details and the whole picture. They make a split second judgement.

NotInvisible · 22/01/2024 21:18

Nope. I'm 30 and often mistaken for under 18, lol. I always get asked for ID. Surprises everyone when they see it.

Workawayxx · 22/01/2024 21:19

I used to look younger in my 30s but since hitting 40, 3 mc and another baby I look about my age maybe a bit older. I probably look younger from a distance as I’m slim with long hair but older up close! My skin has always been a bit rubbish with one thing and another so I’m not too bothered about having great skin, at least I have fewer spots now! I’m doing skin&me (tretinoin) so will be interesting to see if that makes a longer term difference. It has already improved the texture quite a bit.

DustyMaiden · 22/01/2024 21:20

I remember my DM moaning at me and DB she was wearing her hair in curlers , completely grey, taken her teeth out. I was 16, she would’ve been 40. I really don’t think I look as old as she did. I may be deluded.

I was like this at 30! Got asked for Id still. I’m afraid 50 is a different ballgame ..!

NannyGythaOgg · 22/01/2024 21:25

I am the age I am and I don't care who knows it.
I have 2 totally separate groups of friends. (All 69 to 79)

One of them, all about the same age, the others are both living with medical challenges, which, whichever way you look at it, show. Probably more in their mobility rather than face. If they look their age then I definitely look younger when I am with them.

The other group are fit and active, more so than me. I suspect people may well think I am older - or at least midrange - as I am actually the youngest in this group.

My siblings, as a whole, look at the younger end of their age range. My parents both lived into their 90s, so I suspect, there is a large genetic component.

(As an aside, in Turkey on holiday, my daughter (mid 40s) is definitely seen as younger than her age. Genuinely believe this is that their much harder life makes them look much older)

ProfessorPipsqueak · 22/01/2024 21:25

I'm 37 and I reckon j look 35-42 depending on the day. I have a chronic illness and sometimes when I've had a night of feck all sleep I look in the mirror and think bloody hell, then other days when I'm feeling more spritely I think I look in or around my age. No-one would ever think I was 27 though.

Moier · 22/01/2024 21:26

Yes l look younger.. think it's because l can't raise my eyebrows so don't have frown lines.. I've never smoked or drunk alcohol.. I'm a bit over weight so my face isn't sallow.
I go to the hairdressers every six to 10 weeks for cut and high lights
I don't like myself without my glasses.
So my face looks younger.. unfortunately my doesn't and it doesn't feel it.
I'm 65.. ladies l didn't know who l met at my friends restaurant in Kendal last week thought l was @56
I was well flattered.

Jellykat · 22/01/2024 21:28

I didnt until about 2 years ago, people couldnt believe i was as old as i was, then wham!!

sqcrispsal · 22/01/2024 21:30

@DustyMaiden you probably do look better than your Mum because having your teeth out prematurely ages you as it causes bone loss in the jaw and accelerates aging in other ways. People shouldn't really have teeth out unless it is necessary but in the past it wasn't uncommon for people to get all their teeth out at quite a young age and have dentures instead. However as most people now keep their teeth, have better nutrition and so go grey later and can dye their hair if they wish then it changes what 40 looks like in general so having your own teeth and colour hair is just normal for that age.

shangelawasrobbed · 22/01/2024 21:30

I'm 35. I look mid-late thirties, I think. Maybe early forties on a bad day, or to someone much more affluent than me (I think rich people tend to look younger).

To be fair, though, I'm an ex-smoker and I used to drink far too much alcohol, which probably hasn't helped. I also don't use any skin care products other than makeup remover wipes (and I often forget to use them until morning). So I don't really "deserve" to look any younger than I am!

God bless my mum though. She doesn't think I look a day over 25.

IggOrEgg · 22/01/2024 21:33

It makes me laugh how many people are adamant they look younger than they actually are. I’ve had several people say it to me irl and they’re always wrong. Not to say they look shit but they just look their age! I just think people are terrible at guessing ages and have their perception skewed by media etc. The clothes you wear, the make up you choose, the hair etc, it all makes a difference but facially, people nearly always look the age they are.
I look my age and I don’t think that’s a bad thing, given I am that age! I’m 29 and I look like a woman in her late twenties, some may say I look mid twenties, some may say early thirties but no one is going to genuinely believe I’m too much one way or the other.

Riverstep · 22/01/2024 21:33

Quite common to look younger in your 20’s and 30’s. People in their 40’s onwards generally look it. I only know one person in her 40’s who genuinely looks quite a lot younger than she is. She has a great figure and fabulous skin.

mrlistersgelfbride · 22/01/2024 21:34

Yes according to other people- but I think I look 100.

I work with a 24 and a 31 year old. One of them says we all seem the same age, and I'm nearly 39, so I'll take it.
I work out a lot and try not to eat too badly. I've always been into skincare and make up.
But I'm also quite immature 😅 which is obviously not great but I suppose it's better than being old before your time!

Goddessonahighway · 22/01/2024 21:34

I'm in the group of looking younger until peri. Think I pretty much look my age. My older sister is a decade older than me but looks about the same age.

Shodan · 22/01/2024 21:35

I looked younger than my real age until fairly recently.

Then my neck went all crepey and I think I look like my age (55).

However- people always think my DP is older than me and he's actually 3 years younger, so I'm ok with that 😁

HearMeSnore · 22/01/2024 21:35

Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

Had a new passport photo taken recently and when I saw it all I could think was "Who is that haggard old crone wearing my coat?"

Then at work I was asked how long I've been doing my job. I said 25 years. They said "you can't have - you're not old enough, surely?"

So, good days and bad days, I guess.

Mythnames · 22/01/2024 21:37

I literally have no idea, I’m late 30’s. I’m not about to go around asking people for the truth as I’d dread the answer I’d get 😂😂. A few (maybe 3 or 4) people have said unasked that I look a lot younger but I always just think they are being polite. I’m quite boring and don’t often wear loads of make up etc - dunno if that makes me look older or younger 🤷‍♀️

Rocknrollstar · 22/01/2024 21:38

People are surprised when I tell them my age as they always think I am at least five years younger. DS is four years younger than me and has always been assumed to be the older sister. Even on her wedding day people told her ‘we’ve just met your younger sister’. She looks very good from the back.

curvesfordays · 22/01/2024 21:42

I look my age - maybe even a bit older. Im carrying baby weight especially around my middle and I have had terrible acne post pregnancy and acne scarring - my hair is greying terribly at the front... but wrinkles I have none. So yeah not doing too badly but things aren't great either in that respect.
