Do you look your age ?

Not wishing to brag, but I often feel I could pass for 5 - 10 years younger. I've never asked anybody this question and I'm purely using the judgement of my own eyes. If I go back in time 39 years to when my late Dad was the same age as I am now (53), I see a man in early middle age with a full head of black hair - some greying - but a rather lined face and seemingly expanding ears! I, on the other hand, have a lot more grey hair than he did but a much denser texture and no obvious facial lines. I've always had bags under my eyes but not Peter Woods proportions! My sister is 61 but she could pass for late 40s, in my opinion.

Maybe there's no right or right or wrong answer. I could have a skewed personal perception or perhaps we're all living longer and I'm seeing that played out at close quarters.

PS. The old man had, along with Mum, raised seven children by the time he was my age whereas I have no children. So, no parental stress!

I always looked young (baby face) but I went through a period of drinking in my 20s to 30s not alcoholic style but it was definitely more than I should.
I've cut back considerably meaning I've naturally lost weight and feel much older because I'm thinner and I can see how the drink aged me.
I also look at me before 3 children and think how much I've aged since having them this decade.
I'm 40 now.
My hairs naturally blonde but I've always coloured it a nicer blonde which I grew out during covid to find I'm nearly 50% grey but actually look younger for not colouring my hair.

I’m 48 and think I look somewhere in the region of 50

Fatfinch · 22/01/2024 20:31

There are people that look younger than their years (not me). There was a thread on here a few months ago about Denise Lewis, I would say that she looks 10 years younger than she is, down to genetics, fitness and super healthy lifestyle.

coxesorangepippin · 22/01/2024 20:32

Look younger than my genteel 41 years on this earthly plane

Not sure it's always helpful career wise?!

simpsons1 · 22/01/2024 20:32

Funnily enough I’ve been worrying about this all weekend. I’m in my early fifties and suddenly feel older, and feel like I look older. I don’t have many wrinkles (fat face!) but have noticed my mouth looks a bit downturned especially when I am tired. Was researching cheek fillers but not sure I’d go for ‘that sort of thing’

sqcrispsal · 22/01/2024 20:34

I think Denise Lewis looks amazing, but she still looks like a woman in her early 50's and there is nothing wrong with that.

samthebordercollie · 22/01/2024 20:34

Facially I look my age (58) due to too much sun when young plus lots of running outside. However I'm slim and really fit due to running and strength training so move like someone 30 years younger.

Tessisme · 22/01/2024 20:35

I'm 56 and I look 56 - possibly older. I reckon I might have passed for younger than my age in my forties, but after about 51 everything went to shit🤣 I honestly don't give a toss though. You are the age you are, no matter what your outer casing looks like.

Amy1998 · 22/01/2024 20:35

I get these said to me all the time:
”What year are you in”
”Can I see some ID please”
”So are you back at school then”
”I thought you were 15”
”It doesn’t help that you’re tiny”
”How old are you” - said to me when I wanted to get my eyebrows done

FuckingHellAdele · 22/01/2024 20:36

I'm 49, and I reckon most people would put me between 50 and 55.

It is what it is, I think I've always looked a bit older than I am, even going back to my teens. I've no grey hair yet, and I'm not particularly wrinkly- it's just gravity I guess!

Dacadactyl · 22/01/2024 20:36

I'm 38 but could easily pass for mid 40s. And without make up even older lol!

Boomboomshakeshaketheroom · 22/01/2024 20:37

People usually guess a bit younger (mid-late 40s and I'm early 50s) but maybe they're just being polite/ playing it safe. I do put a fair bit of effort in so I would hope it makes a difference.

Equimum · 22/01/2024 20:39

I look older. I think it's genetic as my aunt used to get referred to an my gem all the time when I young, but she's only 35 years olde than me. I know that I look older (not only due to my grey hairs and many lines), but the fact a mum at school once referred to me as being one of the other older mums - I was ten years younger than her (!) and that people in my uni course often seem to assume I'm nearer 50 than 40 (I'm 41).

MsCactus · 22/01/2024 20:39

I'm 32. I look about 21 I think.

I recently got asked my age by a taxi driver. I couldn't be bothered with him freaking out about it so I lied and said I was 27. He gasped and said "I'd never have guessed you were that old". 🙄

I answered the door a few weeks ago without makeup and a man asked if there was an adult at home 🙄

My mum is 60 and holding my baby in public recently. EVERYONE assumed baby was my mum's and I was my baby's sister. I'm 32 FFS.

But tbh I think it's genetics. Neither me or my mum have a big skincare routine or anything. My family all live a VERY long time though (age 100-110+) so I think we age slowly...

Pinkplans · 22/01/2024 20:39

I’ve had quite a few people tell me I look young for my age. I’m in my 40’s but look 5-10 years younger and I’m very average looking. I think it’s in the genes. My mum and sister are often told they look young for their age too. None of us wear make up on a daily basis but we all moisturise daily, not that I think it makes much of a difference to how old you look.

StarDolphins · 22/01/2024 20:40

I look 10 years younger at least. Not great for meeting people, I can attract them but then they find out I’m 49 & they’re 36, it’s a problem for both of us.

My parents both looked way younger too. It’s not like I’ve lived healthy, I used to smoke & drink loads.

I'm 54 and I think I look it. People's standard response seems to be surprise that you could possibly have a grown up daughter/son or be in your forties or fifties. Pretty much everyone I know looks their age, which isn't a bad thing either.

Illpickthatup · 22/01/2024 20:43

People always look shocked when I say I have a 17yo old stepson. Even more so when they ask if my DH is a bit older and I tell them he's actually younger.

I'm 36 and when we were out just before Xmas a stranger guessed my age as 25.

Post a picture then 🙄

preggegg · 22/01/2024 20:44

Have a baby face and hate it. Especially at work when I feel like I may not be taken as seriously as someone who looks older. A patient of mine recently said "I suppose you're a bit too young, but when you're old enough to have children, you'll understand."

Must look bloody 16!!

daisychainsaw7 · 22/01/2024 20:45

I'm 50 but often get mistaken for a child.

In fact last week someone at work asked why I was there and shouldn't I be at school..LOLOL!

MsCactus · 22/01/2024 20:46

MissTrip82 · 22/01/2024 20:16

Probably, almost everybody does.

In nearly two decades of meeting thousands of strangers whose ages I know for professional reasons, I’ve not once seen anyone who looks ten years younger than they are. Not once. Not ever.

Its never occurred to me than when people say they’re surprised at how old you are
or that you look younger that they’re being anything other than polite. Mumsnet however is full of 75 year olds without a single wrinkle.

Would you know if you had though? You don't generally ask people their age. You'd just assume younger.

A few weeks ago I got mistaken for a child when I wasn't wearing makeup. I'm 32.

My mum is 60 and said something at work about her three children - her colleague said "ooh which school are they at?!"

My brothers are in their late 30s...

poopoolala · 22/01/2024 20:46

I really don't think looking your age is much to do with your actual face .

I am short , have curly hair , naturally long eyelashes and big blue eyes .

I have an hourglass size 8 figure and wear fashionable / stylish/ interesting clothes

I and nearly 50 but most people presume I'm 30's .. I have had this continuously through my life ..

As above though I don't think it's my face although it is I guess not that lined but it's my overall presentation.

I work with a lot of young people and when I see their parents I'm not surprised people think I'm younger as a lot of women my age seem to have just given up .

I do moisturise daily but have never had any injectables and won't either .

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 22/01/2024 20:46

Well, I don’t think I look my age. I met my dh friend’s partner for the first time at the weekend, she said ‘I didn’t think you were that old’. 😂
