Do you look your age ?

Not wishing to brag, but I often feel I could pass for 5 - 10 years younger. I've never asked anybody this question and I'm purely using the judgement of my own eyes. If I go back in time 39 years to when my late Dad was the same age as I am now (53), I see a man in early middle age with a full head of black hair - some greying - but a rather lined face and seemingly expanding ears! I, on the other hand, have a lot more grey hair than he did but a much denser texture and no obvious facial lines. I've always had bags under my eyes but not Peter Woods proportions! My sister is 61 but she could pass for late 40s, in my opinion.

Maybe there's no right or right or wrong answer. I could have a skewed personal perception or perhaps we're all living longer and I'm seeing that played out at close quarters.

PS. The old man had, along with Mum, raised seven children by the time he was my age whereas I have no children. So, no parental stress!

It’s not your face, if you’re slim and short your age gets dragged down

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 22/01/2024 20:48

Yes, I do. Most people do, tbh.

sqcrispsal · 22/01/2024 20:49

People always mistake me for an undergrad at the local university and the male students there are forever chatting me up and get the shock of their lives when I tell them my real age, go on bet you can't guess!

Do you look your age ?
bestofall · 22/01/2024 20:49

I'm 61 and people at work think I'm between 45-48
I've had to show my passport to a few to prove it.

I look about 107.

I'm 54

Same . I look so haggard. at some point I need to see if I can afford a decent haircut and see if it makes a difference

sqcrispsal · 22/01/2024 20:51

@Countrylife2002 I bet you look great and also your age, I agree though that a good haircut can make you look so much better and more importantly feel better!

Babyblackbear78 · 22/01/2024 20:52

People are often shocked when they find out I have a son who's graduated uni and one who's at uni. They asume I'm early 30's. I'm mid 40's.

Countrylife2002 · 22/01/2024 20:53

Just read back and I feel a bit better as I swam a lot last year and have just added in weight training so hopefully getting in shape will help too! I now exercise 6 days a week.

Missingmyusername · 22/01/2024 20:53

I think the majority of people look younger now as we take more care of ourselves, dress better, exercise, eat well, Botox, filler, spf etc.

SausageAndEggSandwich · 22/01/2024 20:55

I think people live healthier lives than they used to and an average 50 year old now looks better than your mum did when she was 50. People have fewer children, drink less, smoke less, use sunscreen.

Also I think PP has it right that a lot of it is about attitude rather than looks per se. If you are 40+, wear clothes with a nod to fashion, are interested in the world around you, keep up to date with modern culture you could easily tell people you're ten years younger than you are and people would just accept it.

Fizbosshoes · 22/01/2024 20:56

I think I look younger, I am sometimes mistaken for younger, or asked if I am. I am pretty short and always dress casually so I think out of laziness people might assume I was younger.

But MN insists no one looks 5 years younger than they are so I probably don't!

MargaretThursday · 22/01/2024 20:57

Obviously the majority of people look about right for their age otherwise we would adjust our expectations accordingly. 🤣

I think something to realise though is I think most people in RL if asked to guess an age will guess lower than they actually think, to save hurting feelings.

thefunnybones · 22/01/2024 20:57

Ppl can never believe when I say I'm almost 40, I often get told I look 10 years younger

RolyPolyFishHead · 22/01/2024 20:57

It honestly changes depending on how much sleep I have had, I don’t sleep that well quite often and when I get a good nights sleep I do look a lot younger, sadly not often.

AdoraBell · 22/01/2024 20:57

Apparently not, according to DDs and neighbours. Last year I cut back severely on sugar. I’ve always been an emotional eater and struggled with my weight. Last year, at the ripe old age of 55, I decided I’ve had enough. Instead of having pastries/cake just because I’m having a coffee I now have just 1 or 2 each week. Also stopped buying biscuits and crisps because once a packet is open I can’t resist finishing it.

Both DDs, DH and other people have said I have lovely skin and actually look younger than I looked last year. The only thing I can put that down to is the cut in sugar and processed foods.

Amy1998 · 22/01/2024 20:58

I wish there was a more private way to actually prove you look younger 😂

sunshinegirl28 · 22/01/2024 20:59

I think I look about 46 - I am 41!

If people post a pic, I'm sure half the posters would just say they looked 98 to try to prove them wrong! 🙄

HedgehogB · 22/01/2024 21:01

I am 51 and was asked for ID in Sainsburys on the weekend! That was just silly but some people think I’m under 40. I am greying but I have my hair coloured and a few highlights put in. No wrinkles apart from a couple under my eyes but I’ve always had elastic skin (no stretch marks, cellulite etc) . I don’t wear much makeup but I think too much can be ageing. I don’t dress young, more Phase 8 , smart type stuff? Nothing more ageing than dressing too young I think. I’m slightly overweight, I’m 5 foot 8 and 12 stone, but I think being too thin can make you look older. I’m sure a massive slide will shortly happen however, as I’m now in perimenopause …..

MissingMoominMamma · 22/01/2024 21:03

When my face is ‘resting’ I definitely look my age. When I’m smiling, I look my age, but fitter and nicer.

They could never say that to me 😂

sqcrispsal · 22/01/2024 21:04

There was a thread recently where people did post pictures to prove they looked younger but it turned out that most people could indeed guess their correct age, obviously there were some mean spirited people but most people were pretty much on the money and these were photos of posters who were adamant that they looked much younger and that everyone else thought they looked younger. In 99.9% of cases these people are delusional. Even Jlo was in the press today looking every bit the 54 year old she is and she looked fabulous. Stop making looking young a prize!

Neverpostagain · 22/01/2024 21:06

Yes I look my age. I'm 61. This is what 61 looks like.

LocalHobo · 22/01/2024 21:07

I read somewhere recently that most adults think they look approximately 20% younger than they actually are.
I can tell the story of, when buying party paraphernalia for a significant birthday with a zero on the end, the retail staff got down all the stuff for the significant bday a decade before mine. So yeah, I look great I think. None of my friends look their age in my opinion either, but when someone my age comes on TV I am shocked how ancient they look.

Edited

For under 25s if people say they’re young then they genuinely do look young. Plus irl is different because if you’re thin and short people think you look younger. I’ll be honest, the older women saying they look young really don’t to me they look older or their actual age
