Apologies if there is already a thread but I couldn’t find one. What on earth has gone on between Amanda Abbington and Giovanni Pernice during Strictly?AA is apparently taking legal action against the BBC claiming she has PTSD.

Mental health is a weird one isn’t it, because while everyone says that people should be open about their mental health, when they actually are, people don’t believe them and tell them to shush

I think if she has a diagnosis of PTSD and has the evidence, she should go ahead.
I don't think it's fair to judge Giovanni before the event, though.

my comment specifically relates to all the people on this thread and elsewhere who say she cannot have ptsd, don’t believe her etc.

Oh I see. It needs to be investigated properly.

Who knows that happened, but terms like PTSD should be reserved for a bit more than a possibly rather aggressive dance coach. Watching people die violent deaths, that sort of thing, that's what I think of as PTSD...

But you don’t know what she says caused it. You are assuming ‘rather aggressive dance coach’. Could be something happened that… you don’t know about yet.

willWillSmithsmith · 08/01/2024 17:07

The thing is some people respond really well to a more militant, aggressive learning style (regardless of what it is) and some people respond better to a more gentle approach. I’m in the latter category. I can’t learn or improve if someone is yelling at me. I become anxious and stressed and tearful but if they’re kind and patient I can become very confident about my abilities. Maybe AA responds better with the more gentle approach.

TheSpottedZebra · 08/01/2024 17:09

Ranvir Singh is the other who didn't get on with him.

Basically he seemed to get on with the ringers / good dancers, and not the ones who weren't already excellent dancers. Apart from Amanda who could dance but didn't get on.

Maireas · 08/01/2024 17:09

I think he did exceptionally well with Rose.
That was some achievement.

PremiumRaa · 08/01/2024 17:10

Ranvir Singh got on with him brilliantly so much so she kept trying to imply they were in a romantic relationship. She said they had an argument in training but talked about loving him and couldn't sing his praises enough.

IDontWantToBeInAnyGangThatYoureIn · 08/01/2024 17:11

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. It could be career ending for Giovanni if he gets bad publicity out of the enquiry (assuming one goes ahead).

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 08/01/2024 17:11

I don't think Giovanni is a bad person, there is a place in the world for driven, competitive perfectionists, they just shouldn't be paired up with the emotionally fragile. Some people can be told "That's not good enough, do it again" 20 times a day and be driven to do better, other people would be broken by that and need constant positive feedback to be able to push themselves onward. If you are happy and self-confident then you can better tolerate being pushed to get a thing right, because it's the 'thing' that's wrong not you, people with low self-confidence are more likely to internalise constant criticism and believe that the other person dislikes them. There should probably be some sort of sports psychology coaching for the pros so that they can learn to use the motivation method that suits different personality, I think Giovanni only uses the method that works on him.

There are pros who are kind and gentle that she would have been better paired with, like Kai or Nikita.

workshy46 · 08/01/2024 17:11

I think most people would keep quiet and not say anything for fear of it harming their career and being viewed as a "pita" as someone mentioned above so the fact that many of his previous partners have spoken out says a lot. I didn't watch it but she is caring for a partner who nearly died and is now paralyzed so she needed the work , exposure and money so can't see her doing this unless it really was awful but who knows. She doesn't seem like a shrinking violet either and has been in the industry a long time

Milkand2sugarsplease · 08/01/2024 17:12

She's a bloody snowflake. Griping at being pushed to do her best. Shes asked for the footage, so if there was anything untoward on there he would have been picked up on it before now.

I don't even watch it but I know it takes time and effort so If she didn't want to put in the effort and hours, she shouldn't have signed up to it

JayAlfredPrufrock · 08/01/2024 17:12

It’s unfortunate that she was unhappy but I think PTSD is a bit rich.

disorder(PTSD)[a] is a mental and behavioraldisorder[7] that develops from experiencing a traumatic event, such as sexual assault, warfare, traffic collisions, child abuse, domestic violence, or other threats on a person's life or well-being.

However happy to be proved wrong if video evidence reveals some life changing hideous occurrence.

Good for her for calling him out for being a bully towards her

He clearly was similar to Ritchie and Laura

It takes a brave person to speak out and to prevent further upset for future contestants who might be paired with him

Celebrities go on these shows to re kick start their careers so they will naturally be to scared to speak up

Therefore good for her for being brave despite any backlash

ChessieFL · 08/01/2024 17:15

Has she called him out for being a bully? She has apparently asked to see the footage but has she actually said anything beyond her statement when she left Strictly? I don’t think people should be making assumptions about what went on until (if) the full story is revealed.

No, not bullying. All the papers are reporting PTSD.

I've just read that AA is suing for PTSD.

Just heard a woman discussing this on the bus and saying that she though AA was seeing the BBC as a big fat meal ticket.

Surely she must have know what Strictly entailed as it is not like it is in its first year. Even I would imagine professional dance training is very, very hard work.

You didn't watch it, so why are you commenting?

Maireas · 08/01/2024 17:20

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar , although I've seen rehearsal footage of both Kai and Nikita, and they certainly push their partners! Nikita was very rigorous with Layton. It does look tough.

ATerrorofLeftovers · 08/01/2024 17:21

Spongeeater · 08/01/2024 16:51

That doesn't mean your definition is correct.

PTSD refers to death, either experiencing somebody else’s death, fearing somebody could die, or fearing you could die yourself.

Amanda Abington may well have been bullied by Giovanni and she may be traumatised as a result and suffering the sequelae of that. She can’t have PTSD though. I think that sometimes people use that term because they want you to y defend how serious something is. And it can be very serious indeed, without meeting the definition of being PTSD.

MILTOBE · 08/01/2024 17:21

Trauma doesn't always involve death. What about women who are raped, beaten, terribly controlled?

ATerrorofLeftovers · 08/01/2024 17:22

Understand, not defend. I meant they use the term PTSD as they consider their condition to be serious and want others to understand that.

It is incredibly demanding, and Amanda seemed to be rising to it. She performed very well. She dismissed rumours about any negativity between her and Gio, and always seemed so positive on ITT. She certainly had talent and could have got further in the competition.

Moier · 08/01/2024 17:23

She said he worked her too hard during in training and shouted at her.

Milkand2sugarsplease · 08/01/2024 17:23

@TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening didn't realise you had to watch it to be allowed an opinion.
I've seen what's been reported about her and my opinion is as valid (and useless) as everyone elses, including yours - if you sign up to do a show, and take the paycheck, you commit to what it entails. Learning to dance takes commitment and effort.
