Apologies if there is already a thread but I couldn’t find one. What on earth has gone on between Amanda Abbington and Giovanni Pernice during Strictly?AA is apparently taking legal action against the BBC claiming she has PTSD.

Who knows that happened, but terms like PTSD should be reserved for a bit more than a possibly rather aggressive dance coach. Watching people die violent deaths, that sort of thing, that's what I think of as PTSD...

Well you're wrong.

I don't think it's fair to accuse Giovanni without evidence. Katya is known to be quite demanding and rigorous, for example. When you watch any training footage it does look like hard work.

No one has accused anyone. She has requested rehearsal footage.

Mental health is a weird one isn’t it, because while everyone says that people should be open about their mental health, when they actually are, people don’t believe them and tell them to shush

Yep.

Fucking hell. I have never watched Strictly in my life but the level of ignorance about PTSD is ridiculous.

Broadly speaking there are two forms of PTSD. The first is the generally known form of it where someone has undergone a major traumatic event. So for example my ex who waa randomly attacked with a machete.

The other is C-PTSD. This is when people undergo ongoing abuse and trauma. I have this due to a past relationship.

As I said I have no clue about the show or relationship between rhe two dancers but it's not outside the realms of possibility that she has C-PTSD if he's consistently treated her badly.

I don't think Giovanni is a bad person, there is a place in the world for driven, competitive perfectionists, they just shouldn't be paired up with the emotionally fragile. Some people can be told "That's not good enough, do it again" 20 times a day and be driven to do better, other people would be broken by that and need constant positive feedback to be able to push themselves onward. If you are happy and self-confident then you can better tolerate being pushed to get a thing right, because it's the 'thing' that's wrong not you, people with low self-confidence are more likely to internalise constant criticism and believe that the other person dislikes them. There should probably be some sort of sports psychology coaching for the pros so that they can learn to use the motivation method that suits different personality, I think Giovanni only uses the method that works on him.

There are pros who are kind and gentle that she would have been better paired with, like Kai or Nikita.

You know him personally then?

She's a bloody snowflake. Griping at being pushed to do her best. Shes asked for the footage, so if there was anything untoward on there he would have been picked up on it before now.

I don't even watch it but I know it takes time and effort so If she didn't want to put in the effort and hours, she shouldn't have signed up to it

Aaaaaaand there it is.

That awful term snowflake.

Hurled at anyone who declares an issue with MH from the same people who put "Be Kind" all over their SM.

An insightful and measured response. 👌

It’s unfortunate that she was unhappy but I think PTSD is a bit rich.

disorder(PTSD)[a] is a mental and behavioraldisorder[7] that develops from experiencing a traumatic event, such as sexual assault, warfare, traffic collisions, child abuse, domestic violence, or other threats on a person's life or well-being.

However happy to be proved wrong if video evidence reveals some life changing hideous occurrence.

Edited

Ah we have a mental health consultant here who knows Amanda and what her diagnosis is about.

No?

Dazedandcovidconfused · 08/01/2024 18:43

In terms of PTSD, can be caused by any type of traumatic experience, but typically these will be things like involved in a life threatening incident like an accident, war, or rape/sexual assault, or witnessing something horrible happening to someone.
Technically dancing with a v strict or mean professional in a competition for a lot of money and publicity I guess could make you feel traumatised and result in symptoms of ptsd, but without wanting to sound too harsh, if you’re the sort of person who might be traumatised by that sort of experience I feel like you’d know that about yourself and avoid it?

exactly - lets not normalise this when veterans who have witnessed horrors of war and their lives will never be the same again are the ones with PTSD.

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 08/01/2024 18:44

@JayAlfredPrufrock

There may be physical or sexual assault. No one on this forum knows.

Spomsored · 08/01/2024 18:44

Just to remind everyone that she is an actress and he is a performer and Strictly is an entertainment programme and we may never know what actually happened,.

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 08/01/2024 18:45

ChessieFL · 08/01/2024 17:15

Has she called him out for being a bully? She has apparently asked to see the footage but has she actually said anything beyond her statement when she left Strictly? I don’t think people should be making assumptions about what went on until (if) the full story is revealed.

But that's far too sane and sensible!

People dislike her so they've already judged. And name called. A potential victim.

What a world we live in.

theDudesmummy · 08/01/2024 18:46

The term "PTSD" is used rather loosely culturally and in the media, not to refer to an actual clinical condition. But the actual medical definition (in ICD-11, the WHO's classification, which is also generally the definition used in a legal context, which may be pertinent here as there is talk of civil action) requires there to be a trauma "of an extremely threatening or horrific nature. Such events include, but are not limited to, directly experiencing natural or human-made disasters, combat, serious accidents, torture, sexual violence, terrorism, assault or acute life-threatening illness (e.g., a heart attack); witnessing the threatened or actual injury or death of others in a sudden, unexpected, or violent manner; and learning about the sudden, unexpected or violent death of a loved one".

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 08/01/2024 18:47

@ATerrorofLeftovers

What are your qualifications to make that declaration?

Willmafrockfit · 08/01/2024 18:47

they start strictly training 3 months before the shows dont they?

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 08/01/2024 18:47

MILTOBE · 08/01/2024 17:21

Trauma doesn't always involve death. What about women who are raped, beaten, terribly controlled?

Exactly.

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 08/01/2024 18:48

Well if a woman on a bus and most of Mumsnet think she's a snowflake out for a meal ticket who can't possibly have PTSD, that's clearly case closed.

Good grief.

SaraBarca1 · 08/01/2024 18:49

I don't find it that hard to believe Giovanni isn't a very nice person, he could barely hide his contempt for Ritchie last year which seemed mean spirited of him, especially as Ritchie was a super-fan of the show and obviously on cloud 9 to be there. I felt like he ended up having a rubbish experience due to Giovanni

But obviously innocent until proved guilty, likewise if Amanda feels there is a case to hear then it should be looked into, and it's definitely possible to have PTSD from workplace bully - it can be soul destroying

Hospitalshmospital · 08/01/2024 18:50

I don't believe she has ptsd. I do & it's not something to be said lightly. She may be slightly traumatised by her experience but ptsd? Definitely not!

Theunamedcat · 08/01/2024 18:50

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 08/01/2024 18:47

Exactly.

Would the camera crew not say something

Willmafrockfit · 08/01/2024 18:51

how many weeks was she on the show, she left in october?

BoilingHotand50something · 08/01/2024 18:52

Wow. What horrible posts. People really shouldn’t make these sweeping judgements and statements without knowing the facts. I am shocked.

Snowflakecookie1989 · 08/01/2024 18:53

Reminds me of the Roxanne Pallett CBB thing ie all in her head and I'm worried it'll backfire on Giovanni.
