Voting to 'Get the Tories Out'

1000 replies

DewHopper · 06/01/2024 09:55

Pro Labour posters are all over this platform telling posters to vote for whoever gets the Tories out. It does not seem to matter who it is as long as voting for them gets the Tories out nationally.

It's a worrying voting strategy from my pov but I tend to vote at constituency level. If I had an excellent Tory MP who cared about the things I cared about and served their constituents well, I would vote for them. Similarly Labour ( I would absolutely vote for Rosie Duffield) or Independent.

Do those people who will just vote for anyone as longs as this will oust the Tories - and what could be a very good MP - ever consider the effects of this locally? They may have got the Tories out at a national level but saddled themselves with a useless MP who does nothing for the locality.

Take for example women's rights. I am a gender critical woman and care very deeply about the erosion of women's single sex spaces etc. I am sure that many of the 'Tories out at all costs' people feel the same. The pro Labour people keep telling us that Starmer will be better for women's rights BUT if you vote on a single issue - getting the Tories out - you may well elect a hopeless constituency MP who is TWAW and who will be standing up to every pro woman move that Starmer makes. I worry that there will be a lot of these in the next parliament.

So should we be voting on the single issue - get the Tories out? I don't think so - AIBU?

Personally I think at this point the country is in such deep crisis after so many years of Tory rule that it’s absolutely reasonable to vote tactically however necessary to get the Tories out at national level, however that translates at local level.

IClaudine · 07/01/2024 15:27

What are your thoughts about Sunak's aim to make the lives of disabled people harder @EasternStandard? This will directly affect more women than men as there is a higher proportion of women who are disabled than men. Also, as unpaid carers of disabled people are more likely to be women, it will indirectly (and possibly directly in financial terms)impact women more than men, too.

Well there obviously has to be an outcome. Males allowed access or not. And the law may well change to protect single sex spaces

I’m not disagreeing about an outcome I’m just pointing out that there is no discussion to be had is there?. It’s a black and white agree with me or don’t. That’s it. There’s nothing to debate and more pertinently nothing for an MP to stand as a representative of a community, which will encompass both sides, to diplomatically navigate.

Personally I’m not interested in an MP who takes no care over inflaming existing tensions, not least because I don’t believe this is entirely black and white. As I said earlier the trans genie isn’t going back in the bottle and is driven by society as much as feminism and women’s rights are. To have any influence over the direction that takes requires at least an acceptance of the fundamental beliefs of that section of society. Not agreement, but acceptance.

DrCoconut · 07/01/2024 15:38

For me getting the tories out is a top priority at the next election. The only time I would not vote tactically against them would be if the possible alternative was something like the BNP or UKIP. They are destroying the country and someone else needs a go now, it can't be worse (subject to the above).

DewHopper · 07/01/2024 15:48

The attacks and derision, name calling and superior attitude on here from various posters to women voicing concerns about genderism on here are getting quite old tbf. What is the massive issue? The posters you are constantly having a go at are not going to suddenly vote Labour just because you have been vile to them on an internet forum.

Well that’s up to you. Others will feel differently and welcome political response such as the WM debate or court cases to protect women.

I’d prefer a vote as then everyone gets to decide, whichever way society wants as a democracy.

@DewHopper agree. It’s constant.

Bit weird. You started the thread in AIBU and bought up gender. Seems an odd choice if you aren't able to hear a different perspective without thinking its "vile"

EasternStandard · 07/01/2024 14:56

So @jasflowers and others with the complaint instead of using it as an opportunity to berate and deride why don’t you quote each other on the other topics?

What???

Asked you and others about funding, services and now tax & benefit cuts BUT you always bring it back to Gender.

Which makes me think thats your sole concern, a single issue voter.

HRTQueen · 07/01/2024 16:06

The superiority of a number of the left has been an issues for some time

A belief by some (and I have seen it posted on here) that by putting a cross next to labour makes you morally superior is laughable

it has driven voters away as what people want is to be listened to (have we learnt nothing from Farage) and too many on the left want to preach and have no interest in listening to voters that don’t agree with them

You are claiming ad hominem when that’s not the case. You just won’t engage in an actual discussion.

EasternStandard · 07/01/2024 16:08

jasflowers · 07/01/2024 16:04

What???

Pretty simple

Instead of doing your usual tired attack lines feel free to discuss other topics with each other since ‘gender’ is very dull

Apparently you are all champing at the bit to talk about other things. Go for it.

DuncinToffee · 07/01/2024 16:10

I assume all the attacks, derision and name calling posts have been reportted to MN and subsequently been deleted?

EasternStandard · 07/01/2024 16:11

lol Labour threads would be Swiss cheese if derision and mocking was deleted 😂

For some it’s main posting style

Firefly2009 · 07/01/2024 16:12

You are not willing to say why you don’t want to discuss any other issue. The original post and thread is disingenuous because it’s supposedly about the general election. It is you who don’t want to discuss anything other than the gender debate. Why not? By your reasoning we should all just stay in our own echo chambers. Achieves nothing other than this disingenuous narrative that somehow not voting Tory equals decimation of womens rights, whilst very conveniently ignoring every other issue.

I still have no idea what on earth your on about, the only person coming out with derision and sarcastic comments, like your last 2 posts is you.

Feel free to talk to other posters if Gender is Dull.

Abhannmor · 07/01/2024 16:14

Whatever happened to local government? Tories fucked it up of course.

Still might be worth putting pressure on local council about eg , women's single sex spaces?

Nope my last few posts have been about public service cuts, tax cuts and DV.... no Gender.
In fact i did say earlier its a very important subject, just pity you and others refuse to engage in anything else, but its a free country.

EasternStandard · 07/01/2024 16:17

You can post your thoughts can’t you? On the other topics

Firefly2009 · 07/01/2024 16:26

@EasternStandard we have posted about other things. You only wish to talk about one issue, as does the OP. Why?
