Cates on R4 seems to be saying that they know Rwanda isn't safe but it's the only country they could do a deal with.

Illegitimi non carborundum @IClaudine, please stay and give hope to the rest of us. Bloody grim though, innit. Feel for you.

DuncinToffee · 16/01/2024 10:09

Johnson has emerged from his fridge to support the Rwanda 'rebels' 🍿

Thanks. I am forcing myself to ignore them all!

"Rishi Sunak will fast-track migrant appeals against deportation to Rwanda by drafting in 150 judges & freeing up courtrooms in bid to stave off mass Tory revolt"

Have they got 150 judges? How do you "draft" judges?

There are VAST delays in court cases at the moment - lack of judges, lack of barristers, crumbling infrastructure - but clearly that isn't important enough to fix!

Notonthestairs · 16/01/2024 11:15

Oh realised how you draft mass numbers of judges - you cancel their existing lists. This creating further delays and bottlenecks elsewhere. Neat.

I understand the urge to leave MN @IClaudine - I get it too intermittently and have no doubt will think it more regularly in the months to come.

DuncinToffee · 16/01/2024 11:56

But you will have to cancel out those woke lefty tofu eating judges Wink

Me too. Our toxic politics are driving me to despair at the moment. I’m so grateful to all of you on these threads for keeping me sane. 💐

Perhaps some other crimes could be decrimnalised as the Tories have done with rape, because they know what a woman is.

I had to log off from MN yesterday as there seemed to be an influx of benefits/disability bashing posters and threads which were really doing my head in. I very nearly deleted my membership. Strange they all popped up on the day of the disaster poll...

Can't resist logging on today though to see the Rwanda debacle unfold and read all your comments! Just need to ignore all other threads.

I did that last week after stupidly posting on FWR. Was horrific Sad
I'm trying only go on friendly threads for a bit

AdamRyan · 16/01/2024 12:46

Listened to R5 this morning talking about the increase in machete attacks and someone saying that countries that have reduced knife crime have done it by treating it as a public health issue not by locking up offenders. So depressing as I cannot see the Tories doing anything proactive like that, just awaiting a "tough on crime" splurge from Sunak instead.

AdamRyan · 16/01/2024 12:48

Also WTF is this? I'm a bit scared (either that it's accurate and the Tories have done good gerrymandering or that the BBC have somehow become a Tory propaganda machine)

The polls jump around a bit, but the swing to Labour presently is significantly more than that required.

Sadly yes. I know a few.

IClaudine · 16/01/2024 13:38

Aargh!

RafaistheKingofClay · 16/01/2024 14:18

One way to reduce the number of appeals would be to not try and deport people illegally. We could try that for an idea.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 16/01/2024 14:41

Not in my circle. I think we have a much clearer view of the car crash seeing as we're not caught up in it.

Honest Bob claimed in the Commons that "The law is our servant, not our master." Confused

DuncinToffee · 16/01/2024 14:50

As it stands, Braverman, Jenrick and Clarke are saying they will vote against the bill if not amended

Notonthestairs · 16/01/2024 15:16

What about cates? If cates does then Kruger will.
If Braverman does then Hayes will, etc etc.
They all have their stooges and their hopes for the next leadership election and cabinet positions etc.

Tedious isn't it?!

Another defence to try if you get caught and the police don’t accept you were breaking the law in a specific and limited way.

Notonthestairs · 16/01/2024 15:17

I'm sure I read earlier that the DUP will vote against so presumably they have a deal done.

RafaistheKingofClay · 16/01/2024 15:19

I don’t think there’s going to be enough support to get any of the amendments through is there? So the 3rd reading is going to be put your money where your mouth is time.

Last time lots of people said they wouldn’t and then did.
