Susie Dent -

Word of the day is ‘recrudescent’ (18th century), used to describe something unpleasant that returns after a period of respite.

Susie Dent! On point as usual.

I don’t think there’s going to be enough support to get any of the amendments through is there? So the 3rd reading is going to be put your money where your mouth is time.

Last time lots of people said they wouldn’t and then did.

Thing is if the Government are defeated, surely surely SURELY Rishi has to call a GE. So I reckon the rebels are all hot air

What about cates? If cates does then Kruger will.
If Braverman does then Hayes will, etc etc.
They all have their stooges and their hopes for the next leadership election and cabinet positions etc.

Tedious isn't it?!

Presumably Cates with her keen interest in women's rights will be using her vote and influence to ensure that the bill does all that it can to support women and children in desperate need?

DuncinToffee · 16/01/2024 16:54

Update from the Telegraph about an hour ago

The rebels prepared to vote down the Rwanda Bill
Marco Longhi
Miriam Cates
Nick Fletcher
Robert Jenrick
Sarah Dines
Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg
Sir John Hayes
Sir Simon Clarke
Suella Braverman

  • four more MPs who spoke off the record
AdamRyan · 16/01/2024 16:58

Not enough then, surprise surprise
It's so tedious

Notonthestairs · 16/01/2024 17:02

I always think it's weird when MPs tell journalists that they will vote against etc but won't put their name out in the public until after the vote.
We never know who are the rabble rousers behind the scenes and compliant in public.

DuncinToffee · 16/01/2024 17:04

The debate is over 2 days so plenty of time for more twists and turns.

What a delightful group of humans.

DuncinToffee · 16/01/2024 17:10

Badenoch could join them but it sounds like she on the fence

"I want to thank all colleagues who are trying to strengthen this bill...I will support these amendments.."
Says she will "turn my fire" on Sunak to "get a move on"

RafaistheKingofClay · 16/01/2024 17:16

Badenoch’s PPS is going to join the rebels though.

DuncinToffee · 16/01/2024 17:18

Hahaha, "secretly", how pathetic

Around 40 Tory rebels secretly meeting in a back room in parliament.

Liz Truss, Suella Braverman , Danny Kruger, and Iain Duncan smith all inside

Mark Francois, chairman of the ERG, going through rebel whipping with the other five families

It looks organised…

Jane Stevenson, I just saw that retweeted by Beth Rigby

AdamRyan · 16/01/2024 17:26

Miriam Cates yet again not knowing which party she belongs to: (From BBC live)
A short while ago we heard from Miriam Cates, Tory MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, who said the UK has become known as a "soft touch" among those looking to enter the UK illegally. She says this is because the court delays and hotel accommodation is well known about.

Probably the delays and hotel accommodation are Labour's fault for not opposing properly

DuncinToffee · 16/01/2024 17:35

She is also comparing it with her parenting style

"It's the same with parenting. Effective deterrents are, by definition, fair."

I wonder where she threatens to send her children to

More from Rigby

As for those on govt payroll minded to vote for rebel amendments, this from a govt figure: “The Chief Whip has made clear that any member of the payroll that doesn’t support the Government this evening will have made their position untenable”

Stevenson is on the Government's payroll

RafaistheKingofClay · 16/01/2024 17:39

Sending your children to a country that carries out extrajudicial killings is quite a parenting style.

RafaistheKingofClay · 16/01/2024 17:40

30p Lee and Brendan Clarke-Smith are on the payroll too.

Brave move from Sunak he had enough problems trying to fill 1 Home Secretary spot.
