Meanwhile this is happening -

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/jan/14/englands-councils-bankrupt-westminster

A 40% cut to local government

The money councils receive from central government underwent a real-terms cut of 40% between 2010 and 2020. Inflation has put even more holes in their finances, and the pandemic caused a sudden halt to the cashflows received from car parks and leisure centres.

People will still blame the councils. Especially the labour councils.

It is just so depressing.

The Tories will be out soon, but none of them will ever pay for what they have done to the UK. Cameron and his enabler Clegg, May, Johnson, Truss, Sunak and their various ministers will all be fine for the rest of their lives.

newnamethanks · 15/01/2024 11:08

I can't help feeling that a plea of 'lost my WhatsApps' can't be far away. Assume its being saved for later.

RafaistheKingofClay · 15/01/2024 11:14

My WhatsApp have deleted themselves comes after it was Starmer’s fault I think.

This ‘back to square 1 with Labour’ campaign slogan is supposed to be a bad thing right? Because back to square one looks good to me right now. If I were Labour I think I’d run with this.

This. If there was any justice they would be made to pay. They would if they screwed up like this in any other job.

I wish that were true @Zonder . Sadly, they're in the Golden Arc of Jobs along with quango heads, CEOs of privatised companies, you get the picture. All at the level where we pay for their mistakes and carry on paying if they snag a seat in the HoL. Sorry Nadine, just not up there.

Exactly. There's no incentive for them to do a good job - better to do what rewards them and their friends, knowing they will be rich for life.

RafaistheKingofClay · 15/01/2024 20:01

Apparently Tory campaign chief Levido is meeting with 1922 committee tonight to give them his private polling results. Apparently they don’t like the results in the Telegraph poll YouGov did. It’s undermining the government and MPs election chances.

I don’t think it’s the negative polling doing that tbh.

Hilariously that poll gave them 169 seats which is quite optimistic.

Two deputy chairs, Anderson and Clarke Smith are joining the so called 'Rwanda Rebellion'

Notonthestairs · 15/01/2024 20:38

Yep, what a dysfunctional mess they are, threats and counterattacks splashed all over newspapers & social media.

And lucky us, we've got months more of this nonsense.

UNHCR have conducted a legal assessment of the Rwanda bill and concluded it still breaks international law. A decision that will surprise absolutely nobody.

I think they have accepted some asylum seekers from Rwanda recently.

i analysis of Home Office figures shows that 33 asylum applications have been lodged in the UK on behalf of 51 people from Rwanda since the deal was first announced in April 2022. Of those, six have been granted asylum in the UK.

It includes two men from Rwanda who were offered a grant of protection by the Home Office in 2022, and a woman who received the same in 2023. A further three people from Rwanda were granted asylum in Britain under the UK’s resettlement scheme in 2022 after first trying to lodge an asylum case in Kenya.
It means more asylum seekers have arrived in Britain from Rwanda than vice versa since the agreement was signed, which still stands at zero. It comes despite the UK Government paying Kigali £240m for the partnership so far, with a further £50m payment expected later this year.

................................................................................................................................................................

If an asylum seeker arrives from Rwanda seeking asylum from Rwanda, will they be sent back to Rwanda as it's a safe country and that's the policy to send people to Rwanda?

I don't recall.

RafaistheKingofClay · 15/01/2024 23:22

I think being from Rwanda and being granted asylum there is one of the rare exceptions that can’t be overturned in the bill. (And yes that sentence is as stupid as it sounds. There is no way to make this make sense.)

Can’t even imagine what sort of amendments the rebels are going to add to it.

I think the answer is no because Rwanda is only a safe country if you've never lived there.

It's Shrodingers country. If you send an asylum seeker to Rwanda and close the box so you don't know what's happening, they can be considered both safe and unsafe at the same time. You don't know the answer until you open the box.

This isn't a theoretical cat though.

Shapps used the 'not knowing the specifics' excuse yesterday

newnamethanks · 16/01/2024 09:07

I don't understand how a handful of deranged right-wing truth-twisters can have such a hold on the Tory party. Am I just swallowing the Torygraph agenda in believing they have as much power as they would have us believe or are they really so influential? They seem to consist of a bunch of people who'd be slung out of any pub for causing a disturbance. How can they be representing us and shaping the political agenda? Is it because they are donors favourites and there's an unlimited pot for them to stir? I don't get it.

Thread 35 - Sunak, the squatter
IClaudine · 16/01/2024 09:10

I had to log off from MN yesterday as there seemed to be an influx of benefits/disability bashing posters and threads which were really doing my head in. I very nearly deleted my membership. Strange they all popped up on the day of the disaster poll...

Can't resist logging on today though to see the Rwanda debacle unfold and read all your comments! Just need to ignore all other threads.

DuncinToffee · 16/01/2024 09:16

The timing of those threads are no coinicidence like you said. I wasn't on much yesterday so luckily avoided them.

DuncinToffee · 16/01/2024 09:31

Right, because it's not like there is a massive courts backlog, FFS.

Steven Swinford
Rishi Sunak will fast-track migrant appeals against deportation to Rwanda by drafting in 150 judges & freeing up courtrooms in bid to stave off mass Tory revolt

No 10 believes this deals with rebel criticism that courts will be clogged up with individual claims. They insist number of appeals will be limited

But Tory rebels claim it's a tacit admission that courts face being overwhelmed

Meanwhile there are reports that people are being admitted to hospital with hypothermia because they can't afford heating Angry

Sunak is of course correct that the number of court cases pertaining to deportations to Rwanda will be limited, that is because the number of migrants that will be deported to Rwanda is limited.
