This isn’t good. Post office may now face an unexpected 100m tax bill and be insolvent.

Seems it was illegally claiming tax relief on compensation payouts to postmasters.

I may have been a child when the Falkland war happened, but I lived it. Watching the news every night hoping for a glimpse of my df so I knew he was alive.
Watching as the wives and mothers went through hell, the stress they were under trying to keep it together.

The population wanted to remain British and needed support.

I've read many books on the subject, listened to stories from those who were there and believe that it was the right thing to do at the time.

This war of Sunaks is corrupt, it's for the wrong reasons and entirely contrived. It won't get through scrutiny and if any of our servicemen lose their lives for it he should be jailed. It is not self defence, it is not we, it is him and vanity.

L1ttledrummergirl · 12/01/2024 22:13

It would be interesting to see how much unexpected surplus the post office had and put back into the post office profits, compared to how much they stole of the sub branch officers?

Hampshire Country Council have opened a consultation on what areas they should cut their services to 1.4 million residents, to ensure they meet their £132 million shortfall by April 2025 - following years of austerity cuts.

The options are pretty grim

But that's a Conservative council

Hampshire County Council expected to use £86m from reserves to balance the budget (msn.com)

That's going to upset the narrative in the Daily Mail where they seem to only mention Labour run councils......

Now, if only there was a way for councils to not go bankrupt. Like say, the government giving them enough to meet needs. Crazy, I know.

DuncinToffee · 13/01/2024 20:26

The Times is reporting that Theresa May’s government pushed through a CBE for Paula Vennells, the disgraced former Post Office boss, despite concerns raised on the honours committee about the Horizon IT scandal.

Another Tory low-life trying to take advantage of the ongoing Post Office situation. Noel Thomas is one of her constituents on Ynys Mon (Anglesey) who was wrongly jailed and featured quite heavily in the recent ITV series. So pleased to see his daughter standing up for him and telling Virginia Crosbie where to go.

I’m really pissed off about how this has turned into a political bunfight with everyone blaming everyone else and trying to score points. Politicians of every party have contributed to this dreadful process. Now just bloody sort it out and stop wasting time!

In an effort to win friends and influence people Rishi has refused to delay Parliament’s start time by an hour so MPs can attend Betty Bothroyd’s memorial service.

Obviously it’s more important for us to concentrate on international law. And it’s a complete joke if you consider all the times that they have finished early because the government can’t be arsed to table any business.

That is a disgrace. An hour would make no difference.

BIossomtoes · 14/01/2024 17:20

Hope the chamber’s completely empty apart from Sunak and he’s sitting there alone. Little shit.

I agree @IClaudine - a total disgrace. BB gave a great deal to her role in the Commons for many years.

DuncinToffee · 14/01/2024 17:27

It's petty.

Rwanda is back and 4 refugees died today trying to cross the Channel

From the Times

The US govt and Joe Biden CUT political engagement with Rishi Sunak in the lead-up to the Houthi strikes

Diplomat: "The leaks in the hours before the attack really pissed off the US to the extent that engagement on the political side suddenly evaporated"

“We had planes in the air with pilots flying over dangerous, difficult terrain. They were pretty grumpy about operational security.”

US also annoyed by Shapps' "watch this space"

Quite.
They certainly weren't making the most of their available hours last year - made me think of this -

"So in the second half of 2023, the House of Commons sat for just 56 out of 183 days...

Wheels up for Christmas! 🛫⛷️🏖️"

He's clearly saving it for people who really matter, like Georgia Meloni, for example. Bastard.

From the article

Three of them – Danny Kruger, John Hayes and Mark Francois – on Sunday urged colleagues to stand firm in backing rebel amendments, hailing back to their success in stopping the Theresa May Brexit deal.

This is a little confusing for me, because I thought it was all But Jeremy Corbyn's fault that Brexit took so long, and secondly Boris' oven ready deal was not substantial different from May's anyway and certainly had all the same flaws.

Typical Tory bollocks. There will be a meeting of the "star chamber" where 3 people will attend by zoom, then 1 will abstain. I'm so bored of it.

Yes, more time taken up by infighting and jostling for attention.

It's far less about immigration than it is about who gets a prime spot after the election.

And all for a policy that is so poorly designed that they have to disguise (lie) how much it costs taxpayers.
