Especially with Schapps on his side

I don't think the PO scandal will do anything for Sunak. People aren't that stupid. They will wonder why Sunak never even mentioned it before the ITV drama. The bandwagon jumping was made painfully clear when Patel opened her poisonous gob.

Agree. It's so obvious this is an attempt for popularity rather than a real care. They've had since decades ago to step this up and haven't. The ITV drama forced their hand and they've jumped in it.

It's as transparent as his other moves!

It’s too soon for the polls to move because nothing’s been done yet. I hope I’m wrong but if all the postmasters get a blanket exoneration, substantial compensation funded by Fujitsu and Alan Bates is knighted, watch the needle move. If I were advising Sunak I’d be urging him to milk it for all it’s worth.

Alan Bates has been offered an OBE previously. He declined because he said he's only done what's right and he's not the only one who went through this

The pair of them together are like characters created by by Ricky Gervais. It's very depressing.

newnamethanks · 12/01/2024 15:56

Sunak and Shapps, that is.

Al Jazeera's website has a list of international responses to the US/UK strikes on Houthi sites. I don't know if the quotes are in full or if Al Jazeera (Qatar) is selectively quoting) but most countries are not in favour. It's quite sobering.

The Falklands was different. It was seen as British people being attacked by the Argentinians. Lots went wrong, Thatcher had her moments - such as the recapture of South Georgia, the sinking of the Belgrano and the eventual capture of the islands after long naval and land battles - with a lot of dead and injured.

There were real patriotic scenes during the conflict.

I don't think this can be compared.

Except it’s well documented that there could have been a diplomatic solution. And sinking the Belgrano was unnecessary. It was a cynical ploy to get re-elected. Disgraceful.

I love that song. Takes me right back to my youth.

I wonder if Alan Bates would accept an honour at this stage. He is not stupid and would know that the timing is not a coincidence. Of course he might be a Tory supporter I suppose...

But the effect in Britain was to mainly support "Our boys against the Argies" defending British territory and saving British lives.

And that's very different to what's happening at the moment.

So that's why this can't be called Sunak's Falklands

Yes, I get that.
The Falklands should have sunk Thatcher though, not saved her.

It clearly didn't.
The Falklands were recaptured.
Lots of British flags, patriotism and a real turn around in how Britain saw itself.

I didn’t say it did. I said it should have. Blood on her hands. Actually hers, not by proxy like Blair and Iraq. She chose a war over diplomacy. Deliberately. Because it would help her win an election. She was an evil hag.

Oh, here we go. The Tories do a fucking awful thing and someone pops up to say ‘but Labour’.

TBH - I was 12 at the time. Diplomacy did take place but the Argentinians did not back down.

I have no issue with what happened.

There was a diplomatic solution not pursued. I was 17. I had a friend deployed. It was an unnecessary and disgraceful war.

No - it was questioning why Thatcher won - and how much did the Falklands play versus the "longest suicide note in history" as it has been described and the Labour party in the early 80s

I think if one is going to criticise the Tories on this it perhaps should be for the short sighted cuts to the Navy they had announced. Sound familiar?

I can do facts if you want - but that would be derailing.
I can talk about the Belgrano.
The luck of the Navy
The lack of aircraft
The deaths and hand to hand fighting on Tumbledown'
I come from a military family

And I’m not at all questioning the behaviour of the military. It’s Thatcher I’m criticising.
