Would that explain why Cameron does not know if the UK considers Gaza to be occupied by Israel?

He "doesn't know" because there is no acceptable answer to that question....I had no idea of the complexities around Gaza until I started reading up on it during this war. The UN considers it to be occupied by Israel, Israel considers it not to be. If its not part of Israel its stateless, but Israel controls the borders and everything going in and out. If it is part of Israel the IDF are basically destroying their own territory and then asking the rest of the world to rebuild it (without even going in to the human cost).
If Cameron comes down that it's occupied he's going to annoy Israel. But if he says it's not occupied he might be putting the UK in a position where we are obliged to pay for rebuilding (and also potentially annoy Israel, as it becomes obvious there is a siege at play).

It's an absolute mess.

I seem to be very offensive to some when I post on this so if I've upset anyone on this thread it's not intentional and I apologise.

pointythings · 09/01/2024 18:57

@AdamRyan your position on Israel is considered and nuanced, and that isn't going to sit well with quite a few people. I agree with you.

DuncinToffee · 09/01/2024 19:13

He did say

"I don't think Israel regards itself as an occupying force, but whether that is correct, I would want to take legal advice" he says.

However you expect him to be better prepared when appearing in front of the Foreign Affairs Committee.

RafaistheKingofClay · 09/01/2024 19:20

I’d largely agree AdamRyan. It’s not occupied in the same way that parts of the West Bank are occupied but isn’t exactly a free state either.

Besieged might be better terminology.

I’d also suggest that Israel would quite like to occupy parts of Gaza and that may have led them to walk into a trap Hamas set them.

Don’t laugh everyone but Conservative post have tweeted Elon Musk because the Labour Party keep getting community notes published (presumably the ones on Tory party/sunak tweets) in their favour.

This has been community noted pointing out that the Labour Party don’t write the notes and they have to verified as truthful and helpful before they are published.

Is that a genuine account? Shock

L1ttledrummergirl · 09/01/2024 19:40

That's bloody hilarious.

DuncinToffee · 09/01/2024 19:42

It appears to be verified so who the fuck knows anymore.

Having looked through their timeline and the website it looks legit. As much as any Tory support group can avoid accidentally looking like a parody. Sophie Corcoran appears to be writing articles for them.

Yes, I have come to the same conclusion, their leading barrister is a Tory councillor.

I have shared it on jgw1 'excited' thread Grin

RafaistheKingofClay · 09/01/2024 19:59

looking at their feed today’s Starmer is terrible person story seems to be focused on him being against the death penalty and campaigning to get the death penalty removed in commonwealth countries.

What a dickhead. He had a beer and thinks state sanctioned killing of people is wrong. The right wing media do seem to be struggling to find any real dirt to dig.

DuncinToffee · 09/01/2024 20:03

Don't forget he also bought a donkey field for his mum

I missed that thread. You are a genius jgw it's giving me a proper laugh

RafaistheKingofClay · 09/01/2024 20:46

I do actually have a concern over Starmer. He says politics should tread a little lighter on people’s lives so they don’t have to turn on the news 5 times a day.

What the hell are we going to do all day and talk about? Anybody remember what we did before we triggered article 50 with no plan and all hell broke loose?

I just started it, there have been very many excellent contributions.

RafaistheKingofClay · 09/01/2024 22:47

Just because Tories being community noted isn’t going to stop being funny any time soon - here is Bradley Clarke-Smith MP getting community noted on the Starmer death penalty story.

If I was a Tory MP I would probably stay away from suggesting that criminals shouldn’t be represented by lawyers. Although I do have some ideas about where we could start if we wanted to try it out and see how successful it is.

If I was a Tory MP I’d stay well away from Twitter. No good comes of it for any of them.

MPs have rejected by 304 votes to 228 a Labour attempt to force the Government to release documents detailing the cost of the scheme to send asylum seekers to Rwanda.

Tory MPs led by Jenrick have added 4 amendments to ‘tighten up the Rwanda bill’. Congratulations to them on pretty much ensuring the Lords chuck it out.

Notonthestairs · 10/01/2024 07:09

So they won't tell us how much the Rwanda plan will cost (which means it will cost more than they have told us)
AND
the same people who won't tell us about the cost also don't believe the plan will work?
