I watched a video today and a woman’s pet sphynx cat that she called Nudacris. That tickled me Grin

There's a lady local to us, who has a Dachsund. We were walking our Labrador and my then 5 year old daughter shouted, "Aah! Sizzles!" and made a fuss of the Dachsund.

I was explaining Charlie and Lola to her and she said, "I know, it's actually his name."

I’ve met a couple of times the most glorious white standard poodle called Mark IV.

Is there a reference to get there, or just the unusualness of it?

MotherofWhippets81 · 03/01/2024 06:45

I had a greyhound called Barry - his racing name had been Bernie Scripps (the old man who ran the garage in Heartbeat).

He had a little terrier friend in the same village called Brian. We met in the vets once and rendered the receptionists helpless when Barry and Brian sat together and then had to be called in.

I met a posh lady with 2 well groomed dogs when out walking my own dog.
She addressed the dogs as Colin and Barry, which I thought was fab!

Were they pugs in Lincolnshire? My very lovely posh friend has two pugs called Barry and Colin 💕

Did anyone else think this was going to be about the nicknames couples have for each other?

No?

Just me?

Let's assume you were right...

My favourite is Molly Wobbles for Molly Weasley. It's a shame we don't find out what she calls Arthur.

Chickenwing2 · 03/01/2024 09:17

We were walking in the park and a man was screaming "Haggis! Get out that water! Come here Haggis!"

It was so funny, I am naming my next dog Haggis.

ememem84 · 03/01/2024 09:18

One of the ponies I rode at the stables is called Brian. Which I think is hilarious. All the others are “ie” ending names “holly, molly, polly, fuzzy, etc,,,” then there’s Brian. 🤣

A hamster named Ziggy Sawdust

RicherThanYews · 03/01/2024 09:22

A hamster called Damian and a bulldog called Mr Ernie. Mr Ernie only ever responded to MR Ernie and he could carry his own lead, I was both in love and deeply impressed.

A friend bought his young family a kitten. All three children and both parents had to write what they thought he should be called on a piece of paper, which they put in a box. The first name drawn out of the hat was the cat’s designated name.

He was called ‘Fury’. He lived up to his name.

it was only two years later that the youngest child confessed to his Dad that he wanted to call the cat ‘Furry’ , but he couldn’t spell.

Cuppachuchu · 03/01/2024 09:27

No, it was in the Cotswolds, but it's lovely to know that there is more than one Colin and Barry doggy pair!

I read somewhere that Southwark cathedral adopted a stray and named him Magnificat

That was Doorkins Magnificat. She was a stray who turned up at the cathedral door one winters night and they gave her a home. She had free run of the cathedral and attended many of the services. She was hugely loved by everyone there and people visited especially to see her. She died a couple of years ago and the cathedral now has another cathedral cat, a tuxedo called Hodge. He, like Doorkins was a homeless cat who had been cared for by a cat sanctuary.
