So today me and hubby decided to sit down and watch saltburn. Thank god we decided to watch this just the two of us and not with his or my parents.

it’s the strangest film I’ve ever seen. I adore strange films and my previous weird film which I loved was ‘dogtooth’

this one really goes above that for strangest.

so tell me your weirdest. Strangest films you’ve ever seen!

PS. Has anyone else seen saltburn? What did you think?

You may like an old film 2016
Nocturnal Animals , it is so menacing

OMG. My bestie and I talk about this film all the time!!

But not in a good way.

It was sooooo boring and slow and she wouldn't let me switch it off, so I kept fast forwarding it. And the ending??? WTF!!

That and Manchester by the Sea, are our two most boring films!

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 30/12/2023 08:53

I really liked it especially his dance scene at the end. Strange film but loved it. As others mentioned The Lighthouse which was excellent and I think Robert Pattison was his younger self and he had just lost his mind after been left at the lighthouse for so many years. Great acting.

To Dinodays I loved Nocturnal Animals and Manchester by the sea. Just the dialogue was brilliant.

Men
Dead babies
Gummo

'Mulholland Drive' is probably the weirdest film I've ever seen but I watched 'Sick Of Myself' (it's Swedish) last week and that would probably come a close second.

I enjoyed Saltburn.

AnnaMagnani · 30/12/2023 09:48

No-one for Un Chien Andalou? The classic of surrealist film, no idea WTF was going on but very very weird.

Also:

Belle du jour - bored housewife works as prostitute by day, has weird fantasies of having mud thrown at her
Viridiana - woman decides to become a nun, no idea what is going on apart from a lot of sex, apparently it's a masterpiece
Last Year at Marienbad - about 2 people who may or may not have met and had an affair, and a man who may or may not be the husband. By the end of the film you still don't know.

Even the writer and director of Last Year at Marienbad disagreed about whether the characters had met or not. Well if they don't know, who does!

Gonksmum · 30/12/2023 09:48

Loved Saltburn! It was seriously weird and quite disturbing. The main character was brilliantly acted and all the others were interesting. I also liked his maths mad " friend" at the beginning.

I think a Spanish film from a couple of years ago called The Platform was one of the oddest I've ever seen - it was about a prison with many (100s?) of floors with a table-shaped hole in the middle. Loads of food was loaded onto the table at the highest level and inmates would eat what they wanted. The table would then travel through the hole down the floors with the prisoners grabbing what they could. Obviously, once it got to the lower depths things started getting nasty as no food remained. There were various rules etc which I've forgotten.

It's amazing eh? How different we all are. See it all the time on Mnet. The vegetable curry thread is a great example of that.

I would chew my own arm off rather than watch either of those 2 films again.

Phantom Thread - so good, but such a strange turn of events.

Eyes Wide Shut - I actually enjoyed it but I have no clue what any of it means.

I LOVE Phantom Thread

Oh Lord yes, I'd do anything not to watch Manchester by the Sea again!

Edited- wrong film, I DID like it, I'm thinking of Only Movie Stars Die in Liverpool (?)...with Annette Benning.

DinoDays could also be to do with our age. Good we all like different things. I really cannot watch rom-coms as find them boring as hell as so fake. Watched Goodfellas other night with adult son and forgot how good and fast paced it was. Depending on mood also how we enjoy a film. Happy New Year to all xx

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/12/2023 19:59

I am rewatching Saltburn now, Rosamund Pike is so good "fingers for pudding ...and it hasn't even worked!" Imagine her as your mother 😱

BabyPigeon · 31/12/2023 02:03

Never let me go with Carey Mulligan came to mind. Another sad movie...

Newyearnewarse · 31/12/2023 15:34

Last exit to Brooklyn is not so much weird as disturbing. There is a scene in that which I still think about nearly 30 years on.
If we are talking about TV as well I would nominate Twin Peaks as the weirdest but I loved it.

Newyearnewarse · 31/12/2023 15:36

Has anyone else watched Man bites dog ? That was truly weird.

1990s · 02/01/2024 20:45

Since this thread started I’ve now watched the new one from director of Dogtooth and The Lobster - Poor Things

I… don’t really know what to say about it. Other than it was one of the weirdest things I’ve ever seen.

Last Exit is a very disturbing book also. Quite difficult to read with some chapters ALL IN CAPITALS.

another odd film is the Banshees of Inershirin.

Went into the cinema thinking it would be a comedy along - Irish blarney like Waking Ned. Nope.

Was it any good @1990s ? I've watched clips and it looks... interesting to say the least. Can't decide if I'd like it or not though, was surprised it was an 18

1990s · 02/01/2024 21:18

I really don’t know @covetingthepreciousthings. I wasn’t ever bored, we talked a lot about it afterwards… was it good… I don’t know.

covetingthepreciousthings · 02/01/2024 21:24

@1990s thanks for that, might give it a go. Certainly looks interesting..

brainworms · 02/01/2024 21:24

I loved Saltburn.

rocket74 · 02/01/2024 21:55

Little Otik is the weirdest, longest most tedious film ever made. Marginally beating The Death of Mr Lazerescu - billed as a dark comedy. FFS. Both could have been an hour shorter.

I also find Coraline creepy as hell and The Wizard of Oz gives me so many bad creepy icky vibes all the way through.

Cute weird is Marcel the Shell with Shoes On.

dayswithaY · 02/01/2024 22:54

I used to love the Wizard of Oz, but now that I’ve learned about all the cruelty and abuse towards the actors, it’s totally lost its charm to me.

Poor Judy, she was so exploited, the other actors suffered physical injuries and long term health issues. Very dark.
