So today me and hubby decided to sit down and watch saltburn. Thank god we decided to watch this just the two of us and not with his or my parents.

it’s the strangest film I’ve ever seen. I adore strange films and my previous weird film which I loved was ‘dogtooth’

this one really goes above that for strangest.

so tell me your weirdest. Strangest films you’ve ever seen!

PS. Has anyone else seen saltburn? What did you think?

The Disappearance of Willie Bingham? I'm going to watch it now...

Yeah that's the one. It's very thought provoking but left me with a sick feeling.

I like dogtooth

I like a strange film and made thd mistake of watching the Snowtown murders, horrific and played on my mind after

captainjacksparrow · 28/12/2023 11:06

Loved Saltburn and a lot of films mentioned here.

I will add The Bad Batch on Netflix. Just bizarre.

also Brazil which is an oldie but a goodie

Yes that was disturbing! Good though.

Yes, I saw Saint Maud and i found it really disturbing. And a horrific ending.

I had to leave just before the end. I knew where it was going!

People have a different idea of what is weird, clearly, though. I think I've learnt that when critics label something a black comedy translates to super-weird for me.

worrywilma · 28/12/2023 11:38

I tried to watch Beau is afraid yesterday.

I had no idea what was happening 😂

PersephonePomegranate23 · 28/12/2023 11:48

Tusk has to be the weirdest film ever made

I was going to say that!!

MoralOrLegal · 28/12/2023 11:58

"The Saddest Music in the World."

Followed by Men.

Just checked and there are 2 films called Freaks. The one I love is the 1932 film.

Can't believe it's nearly 100 years old.Shock

My 18 yr old DC, film buff has this in DVD. He likes all sorts. Celine and Julie go Boating and Agruirre Wrath of God are amongst the oddest. Mainstream oddities - well 2001 a Space Odyssey and The Shining stand out for me. I can’t stay in the room for the latter

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 27/12/2023 19:35

Mine was also the most disturbing- A Serbian Film. Never again

With Antichrist a close second 😳

QueenBitch666 · 28/12/2023 13:52

Pretty much anything by Peter Greenaway
Eraserhead
Delicatessen
Martin ( 1977 horror )
Antichrist
A Serbian Tale

Fabulous thread 👌

A Field in England was pretty weird

That scene where he comes out of the tent 😳

I think the weirdest film that I still have a memory of is The Cell with Jennifer Lopez. I'm sure that I've seen weirder films but probably zoned out whereas I actually watched The Cell.

That's one of my favourite horror movies 👌

littleburn · 28/12/2023 14:02

I quite enjoyed Saltburn, but mostly felt it was a millennial toff reworking of The Talented Mr Ripley rather than anything really new and different.

Weird films that stay with me are Delicatessen and Calvaire (more disturbing than weird). Someone upthread mentioned the Jennifer Lopez and Vince Vaughan film The Cell - agree! Despite the very mainstream actors it is full of very, weird dark dreamscapes that stay with you.

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 28/12/2023 14:15

I really enjoyed Saltburn.
(Just placemarking for recs)

Sgtmajormummy · 28/12/2023 14:15

In a time when films weren’t made to be intentionally confusing I saw Vanilla Sky and had no idea what was going on. More recently Midsommar.

I enjoyed Saltburn. There were a lot of 1980s Brideshead Revisited vibes (teddy bear on the coffin!) but it was darkly entertaining. I couldn’t work out where I’d seen Barry K. before. He was the young lad in The Banshees of Inisherin with a flawless West Irish accent.

MercyChant66 · 28/12/2023 14:44

Many moons ago, Breaking the Waves and
Wild at Heart both left me feeling very uneasy as did Betty Blue

Peter Greenway's The Thief the Cook, his Wife and Her Lover
The Draughtman's Contract and A Zed and Two Noughts have all stayed with me too.

Mespher · 28/12/2023 15:14

Most films with Dennis Hopper in are a bit strange, for example Blue Velvet

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 28/12/2023 15:16

Lars Vin Trier films aren't an easy watch, and are weird but I love them.

Oh gosh, Saltburn was light.

The most visually intense and utterly nuts film that springs to mind is Climax by Gaspar Noe. It is dizzying to the point of making you feel like you're on some ghastly rollercoaster.

Ooh!!! Gonna have to put that on my watch list!

In dreams with Robert Downey Junior.

also still don’t know what Donnie Darko was about

Donnie darko was all about time travel!

hands down a brilliant film!

Oh and weird awful weird is probably Lawnmower man.

I just looked at the synopsis for titane…..
