So today me and hubby decided to sit down and watch saltburn. Thank god we decided to watch this just the two of us and not with his or my parents.

it’s the strangest film I’ve ever seen. I adore strange films and my previous weird film which I loved was ‘dogtooth’

this one really goes above that for strangest.

so tell me your weirdest. Strangest films you’ve ever seen!

PS. Has anyone else seen saltburn? What did you think?

Loathed Saltburn. Only good bits were the ones with Richard E Grant and Rosamund Pike.

Weird film with high gore-o-meter was Saint Maud.

Yes, I saw Saint Maud and i found it really disturbing. And a horrific ending.

Totallymessed · 28/12/2023 00:45

Not a film, but was anyone else terrified by the league of gentlemen? And then a few years ago I watched what was described as a "comedy reunion" of the people who made it and it ended with most of the characters being shut in a cupboard which was deliberately set on fire....

MeandBobbyMcGoo · 28/12/2023 01:09

Weirdest, not goriest, film Ive seen recently is Banshees of Innisherin (sp). I have no idea what the take home message was.

AutumnColours9 · 28/12/2023 02:06

Bad boy Bubby
Very disturbing

Boxing Helena

Crash - whichever one of the two of this name is about getting sexual kicks from car crash victims

Eraserhead

There's a group for this on Facebook - incredibly strange films

Swallow. On the surface it's about a woman who consumes inedible objects. But it's really about a woman escaping an abusive marriage. I spent the whole movie making a very uncomfortable incredulous face, until the end which was amazing. My DD watched with me and we talked about it for days. Definitely a good weird and I highly recommend.

The weirdest film I've seen?
The Skin I Live In - Pedro Almodovar.
By far.
Also very disturbing. Couldn't believe what I was watching the whole way through

flowerchild2000 · 28/12/2023 03:23

Another one is Border. It's about trolls. It has the weirdest sex scene ever. It gets weirder and weirder with every scene. I think it might have been an allegory for racism but it's been awhile since i've seen it. I think I'm going to rewatch and probly try some of the others mentioned here, oftentimes weird equals thought provoking or creative. This is actually one of my favorite genres lol. It's the weird for no reason that comes across as pretentious and stupid imo.

Crash was based on a novel by JG Ballard, I just love him. Such a freak. He had to write a second autobiography because he lied so much in Empire of The Sun, a trauma response I'm sure but still such a funny thing to me. His sci-fi stories are incredible. Always super depressing but so imaginative.

That's all very fair and well, but I don't think I will ever be able to bring myself to watch that film again!

weird film i love - midsommar. Instantly went back and watched from the beginning again

I bought it ☺️ I live for her smile at the end! I don't even watch horror but this was incredible.

My siblings and I used to ADORE this. We loved how you had to be quite into it to get the dark jokes and the more you watched it the funnier the layers of in jokes became.

I bought a few episodes this year actually to revisit and omg. They have not aged well!!! Most of the jokes are basically quips about whether someone might be gay or men dressed in women’s clothing. It makes little england look progressive in comparison!

I still think papa lazaru is hilarious though. Although in itself hideously offensive to roma people, DV victims and to top it all off the actor is even in blackface. Yikes.

flowerchild2000 · 28/12/2023 03:38

I ❤️ Huckabees is another weird one. It's usually difficult to find, but it's so smart and funny. Lily Tomlin and Dustin Hoffman play existential detectives. There's also a Jude Law/Shania Twain thing going on. It's one of those movies I would quote from constantly but no one else has seen it so I can't. If you ever come across it do watch!

I got Barbie free with Sky, I haven't watched it yet, I didn't realise it was weird.

Barbie is totally totally weird and bonkers.

IfTheresTeaTheresHope · 28/12/2023 06:02

Mother! Watched because Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Michelle Pfeiffer and Ed Harris were all in it, thought it would be good. I still haven’t got a clue what it was about. Added to the list of WTH movies.

Mydogisagentleman · 28/12/2023 06:41

My DD and I saw Saltburn last week, we both loved it.
Oddest film was probably the one with Daniel Radcliffe and a corpse

MarjorieDanvers · 28/12/2023 08:09

‘Of Horses & Men’ (very weird Icelandic film) - though strangely engrossing!

’Take Me’ - US indie film - much underrated - but is a bit weird!

For context I do like Tale of Tails and The skin I live in (was tempted to mention ‘Wild Tales’ - brilliant Argentinian film - but not sure it’s weird enough!)

Saltburn was very disappointing imo (style over any meaningful substance)!

Mespher · 28/12/2023 08:32

The Devils with Oliver Reed was a bit weird but very much of its time.

Watched Saltburn last night, it's OK, a bit slow and more like a short miniseries than a film.

CormorantStrikesBack · 28/12/2023 08:35

Midsomer, I’m still traumatised. A girl goes to some sort of sex, cannibal cult in Sweden/norway thinking it’s just a nice commune. There’s torture, death, people eating each other, quite a bit of sex.

ghostbusters · 28/12/2023 08:59

Weirdest film I can remember was Cache, a French language film with Juliette Binoche that came out about 20 years ago. I struggled to follow the storyline and it had no ending, it just stopped. The lights came on in the cinema and we like what?

ilovebagpuss · 28/12/2023 09:52

Leave the world behind. Thought it might be a good thriller as it had some decent actors.
Just a bit flat and wierd. I get that it was making a statement about various issues but it was rather a boring film to watch.

Switcher · 28/12/2023 10:04

@Whatineed no not antichrist that's too much for me. It had Nicole Kidman in. Or there's the Guillermo del Toro anthology, Cabinet of Curiosities, that was great. There's a film maker who does weird really well. Fennel is just a middlebrow toff.

Yozzer87 · 28/12/2023 10:27

Honeydew. Gross and weird. I also recently saw a short film that's about 12 minutes long called The Disappearance of Willie ( can't remember the rest) that was disturbing and has played on my mind since. It's available to watch on YouTube.

The Disappearance of Willie Bingham? I'm going to watch it now...
