Explain slippers to me

Genuinely don’t get slippers and thought Christmas might be a good time to ask.

So you’re in the house, taken off your shoes or boots and you have tights or socks. It’s inside so tights and socks are warm enough. When you want to go outside you slip on crocs, plimsolls whatever.

I don’t get slippers. Why do you need shoes indoors?

I didn’t know slippers were even about keeping your feet warm though.
I thought people wore slippers because they are softer than hard floors.

Do you see how people doing things differently actually works?

I’m a non bloody slipper wearer and because everyone is buying them for Christmas I asked the question. Now I know most people wear them for warmth. So thanks those that answered the question.

You are in your 50s and didn't realise that one of the reasons people wear slippers is to keep their feet warm?

That's got sod all to do with "doing things differently". You can do things differently and still use very basic common sense to imagine why people do them another way.

This thread cannot be real.

But you can’t wash sheepskin,/ wool slippers. And people have been wearing the same sweaty pair of slippers for years. Slippers are GRIM! Just more socks surely if you’re feet are cold. There’s thick thermal ones, warm and you can wash when needed.

You can wash Celtic and Co sheepskin slippers on a delicate wool wash.I don't think they do anything special to the fleece. Ugg say you can hand wash their sheepskin boots.

Actual sheepskin doesn't get as sweaty and stinky as fleece/faux sheepskin, and airs nicely anyway.

jay55 · 14/12/2023 12:10

On wfh days I don't put socks or tights on. So keep slippers under my desk for when I get cold.
The rest of my family love slippers and put them on automatically after taking off outside shoes.

If you wore slippers, perhaps you’d be a little less narky OP. Grin

Grin So the fact that they are almost universally fluffy or fleecy didn't give it away? I mean... presumably you've seen slippers?

thesugarbumfairy · 14/12/2023 12:39

I don't have tights or socks on when I get out of bed in the morning! and downstairs the floors are hard and cold. So...slippers

Newsenmum · 14/12/2023 12:41

Because socks alone aren’t very warm and if you drop things on your feet they hurt.

And outdoor shoes in the house are always gross. Have you ever been to a public toilet or walked on the street where someone else might have? Exactly.

How the fuck have got to mid 50s and not realised that people wear slippers to keep their feet warm?!

People wear them for all sorts of reasons….

UnderMontanaSkies · 14/12/2023 12:44

Because I live in an old draughty farmhouse with stone floors and wooden floors and without them my feet would be absolutely bloody freezing!

We don't wear shoes in our house as I don't want all the dirt and crap being traipsed in.

If I lived in a warm house then I wouldn't worry, my friend lives in a barn conversion with underfloor heating and it's blissfully warm underfoot so I don't take them with me.

But most of my friends live in equally cold draughty farmhouses and on the occasions when I forget to take my slippers with me to visit them, then my feet are miserably cold and I hate it!

I literally put them on as I step out of bed and don't take them off inside all day.

Sheepskin slippers are definitely a must round here!

UnderMontanaSkies · 14/12/2023 12:45

And yes we have moppable floors but I really don't want to have mop them any more than I already do because of muddy boots!

RampantIvy · 14/12/2023 12:49

I've never worn slippers. Vile things FOR ME. Fair enough for others.

While I agree that slippers are not a thing of beauty @anythinginapinch, I think calling them vile is a tad melodramatic - the sort of thing I might expect a 12 year old to say.

I don't like trainers with chunky soles. I don't think they are vile, I just don't like them.

BeckhamSeven · 14/12/2023 12:50

I love my slippers. Like, love them. Sometimes I wear them out of the house if I'm driving somewhere (I don't drive in them, but they're in the car with me!) and don't have to get out of the car.
My partner doesn't wear slippers and I can't understand it. He just wears socks or, for forbid, bear feet!!!!!!!!!!

Mrsgreen100 · 14/12/2023 12:52

Slippers for us , wooden flooring and no heating.
i would never walk the contents of the pavement all over my house
grim indeed shoes indoors never

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 14/12/2023 12:54

@UnderMontanaSkies high five! Nice to know I’m not alone in taking my slippers with me when visiting other homes!
i assume your friends don’t ‘die’ like a pp who would if someone brought their own slippers with them?🤣

RampantIvy · 14/12/2023 12:55

What's going on in the world where people don't know that slippers keep your feet warm and (on another thread) they don't know that if you are cold you should put on a/another jumper, or a coat if you are going outside in very cold weather?

ImNotAsThinkAsYouDrunkIAm · 14/12/2023 12:55

Namenumber3 · 13/12/2023 23:24

Sone houses are cold but the floor reflects it so why take off your shoes? I mean if it’s that cold flooring it’s not like the dirt is going to be an issue.
Carpet isn’t cold.p

Eh? Because I want to have warm feet AND clean floors?

RampantIvy · 14/12/2023 12:56

My friends and I bring slippers to each other's houses as well.

Isometimeswonder · 14/12/2023 12:58

I wear socks with my slippers so the slippers are never minging. I wear flip-flops when it's hot.
And I hate bare feet or socks on carpet or floorboards... that makes my feet feel dirty.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 14/12/2023 12:58

@RampantIvy yes!!! I assume no one has as yet died? Or thinks it’s wierd?

Avacadoandtoast · 14/12/2023 13:02

@Namenumber3 come and live in my house for a long weekend and you’ll be wearing slippers in no time. It’s unfortunately too cold to not wear slippers - even our parents keep slippers here for when they visit.

Chewbecca · 14/12/2023 13:04

I agree, I hate slippers, they are stinky.

But I have a really cold kitchen floor and have a little pair of leather ones specially for the kitchen in winter.

LinguisticallyCunning · 14/12/2023 13:05

We don't wear shoes in the house because we don't want mucky floors. We don't put the heating on very high or for very long so our feet get cold. The non slip kitchen floor is murder on socks and they end up with holes in. I like the soft soles inside my slippers as they are more comfy than shoes. Guests just have bare or stockinged feet.

Alwaystired23 · 14/12/2023 13:05

I wear slippers because

  1. I dont want to wear outdoor shoes inside. 2)They keep my feet warm. 3)I don't like walking with socks on as I could slip. Also, I find it wears socks out quicker. And I just don't like the feeling.
  2. It protects my feet if I accidentally stand on something.
  3. I have plantar fascitis, so the advice is not to walk bear foot.
  4. keeps my socks clean.

I don't have the same pair for years, and I can machine wash them so they're not gross and dirty. To be honest, I don't know many people who don't wear slippers, if any.

Terfosaurus · 14/12/2023 13:06

My feet are always cold for medical reasons.
I can't afford to have my heating on.

My carpet is old, thin and not very warm and my landlord won't replace it.
My Dr actually told me I should wear slippers because I'm diabetic and foot injury is more common.

Yes, I was going to say that. I would advise patients with diabetes to wear slippers. They also help prevent falls with elderly people. Good slippers provide a grip and protection.
