Explain slippers to me

Genuinely don’t get slippers and thought Christmas might be a good time to ask.

So you’re in the house, taken off your shoes or boots and you have tights or socks. It’s inside so tights and socks are warm enough. When you want to go outside you slip on crocs, plimsolls whatever.

I don’t get slippers. Why do you need shoes indoors?

Bit worried about you, OP, if you need slippers explaining to you. What next? 'I am very confused by cardigans and have no idea how they work. Can someone help?' Or perhaps 'Can someone explain cups to me?'

Why do some women wear under wired bras 🤣

RampantIvy · 14/12/2023 13:09

I agree, I hate slippers, they are stinky.

Only if you have stinky feet. Are your shoes stinky @Chewbecca?

inappropriateraspberry · 14/12/2023 13:10

My feet get cold very quickly and my toes can go numb. We also have some hard floors that are cold underfoot. Slippers help a lot!
The floors can also be sloppy in socks, so the slippers have a grip that helps. If you have a completely carpeted home, and warm bathroom floors, you probably don't** NEED slippers, but they are a cosy feeling if you are settled and sitting still for a while.

Do you ever get the feeling that some people are perverse just for the sake of it?

BarbaraBuncle · 14/12/2023 13:11

They keep my feet nice and warm. We have wooden floors downstairs and the heating isn't always on so it can feel cold.

And, slippers protect my feet from DCat whose favourite game is to chase people up the stairs, nipping at their feet 🙄

GlasgowGal82 · 14/12/2023 13:19

I'm sitting at my desk in a carpeted room wearing socks and slippers because without the slippers my feet would be cold. I don't wear shoes in the house because they track dirt through the house, and even where we have hard floors downstairs, I prefer to remove shoes and minimise cleaning. I am interested to know what temperature you heat your home to that your feet are never cold?

RampantIvy · 14/12/2023 13:22

Pretty please.

Hard soles are good for the kitchen as the floor can get wet and you don't want soggy socks.
soft totes style are good elsewhere as they have grips but are cosy and flexi
Socks/tights are no good as they aren't as warm and also slippy if you have a wooden floor
Bare feet - cold and tacky and every little thing sticks to them

BertieBotts · 14/12/2023 13:27

I am not a fan of slippers and find shoes too uncomfortable to wear indoors, especially when it's been wet outside, but I get cold feet. I like the slippers that are basically just shoes made of sock. Primark do good ones.

Yes! Fed up of cheerios sticking to my socks, or standing in water on the bathroom floor.

Well yes, I did have a problem with stinky feet when I was younger. Cured by being very careful with 'shoe hygiene', never wearing the same pair on consecutive days for e.g.
It's about the amount of time worn. Some people wear the same slippers all day every day, that's what makes them stinky. Generally shoes are worn for fewer hours and varied more so they're less stinky.

Whatineed · 14/12/2023 13:58

Perhaps you'll need a fainting couch nearby OP, when you discover that all Kita, Kindergarten and Primary kids in Germany, Switzerland and Austria have their own space under their coat peg in school to store and change into their slippers before they enter the classroom.

And most houses have a hanging pouch of guest slippers for people to wear when they visit.

My feet get cold on the tiled floors in our house even through socks. But the main reason I wear them is because I suffered from plantar fasciitis and one of the things suggested is to avoid walking around with bare feet/just socks. So I bought myself some very nice slippers with a proper thick cushioned sole and thye've done wonders. In the summer I wear fit flop style sandals indoors.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 14/12/2023 14:18

I love slippers and have four pairs. I buy new Moshulu ones every autumn for everyday wear. Clean ones for after a bath, ones in a matching bag to take to friends and relatives houses, ballet flats if I need to be a bit smarter.

We have flagstone flooring in the kitchen, it can be freezing in winter. Our family and friends are trained to bring their own slippers.

There are a lot of things I don't understand the point of (for instance face flannels, inflatable Christmas decorations, dogs) but I'm good at slippers.

UnderMontanaSkies · 14/12/2023 14:19

@Alphabet1spaghetti2 no dying at all 😂 in fact it's common practice amongst to take our slippers with us when visiting! And then gasp in horror at our mad small children running about barefoot on a flagstone floor seemingly oblivious to how cold their little feet must be!

shearwater2 · 14/12/2023 14:22

Our floors are slate and York stone. Definitely need slippers.

Even on carpet, I've slipped on the stairs with socks on and slippers are so much cosier and warmer and grip better.

RampantIvy · 14/12/2023 14:25

My podiatrist has recently made me some bespoke orthotics to wear in shoes Which are the best slipper brands that don't cost £££ that offer great arch support?

redlavender · 14/12/2023 14:28

I didn’t know slippers were even about keeping your feet warm though.

This thread is clearly a wind up Grin

Cute slippers! My curiosity was peaked and I think I'm going to order a pair.

I used to get the Fat Face slipper boots every year for winter but my dog loves chewing the elastic/toggle adjustment fitting so these look a bit more robust. ☺️

inappropriateraspberry · 14/12/2023 14:36

@Whatineed I had some moshulu slippers - they wore out pretty quick, I was quite disappointed. I did wear them a lot as a SAHM, but they wore through at the toe for some reason.

Princessfluffy · 14/12/2023 15:14

I live in a cold house and wear slippers for warmth. My dd and DH live in the same cold house and don't wear slippers. I think they are mad not to wear slippers 😝

Princessfluffy · 14/12/2023 15:15

I only buy slippers that are machine washable

Same.

I have a lovely pair of Ugg slippers, fleece lined, and the insoles are washed regularly in a cold cycle with Woolite along with all my other wool items.

I take off my socks and shoes when I come in and put on the slippers - saves the wood floors. In summer I put on flip flops indoors.

We used to have indoor shoes/ slippers in primary school in Ireland, and the same set up with pegs for coats and a cubby below it. We all had drawstring bags on the pegs where the indoor shoes were kept. The cubbies were for outdoor footwear, which was often wet or muddy.
