Explain slippers to me

Genuinely don’t get slippers and thought Christmas might be a good time to ask.

So you’re in the house, taken off your shoes or boots and you have tights or socks. It’s inside so tights and socks are warm enough. When you want to go outside you slip on crocs, plimsolls whatever.

I don’t get slippers. Why do you need shoes indoors?

Sone houses are cold but the floor reflects it so why take off your shoes? I mean if it’s that cold flooring it’s not like the dirt is going to be an issue.
Carpet isn’t cold.p

I don’t want to walk around in my outside high heels/biker boots/wellingtons in the house, let alone having to clean the floors everyday. Normal shoes are not comfortable for padding about cooking, sitting cross legged as I like to, etc. I also have high arches, so even if I did have carpet, I’d find it uncomfortable walking around barefoot all the time. I like glasswien slippers for cosiness and arch support

But you can’t wash sheepskin,/ wool slippers. And people have been wearing the same sweaty pair of slippers for years. Slippers are GRIM! Just more socks surely if you’re feet are cold. There’s thick thermal ones, warm and you can wash when needed.

Cross posted.

You still don't get it do you 🙄

TeenLifeMum · 13/12/2023 23:31

Tights on carpeted stairs are dangerous (I say having slipped down stairs numerous times pre owning slippers and in my current house the hard flooring in the kitchen is not very comfortable when I’m cooking. It’s not cold but I’m cosier in slippers.

All the above, and so that your feet don't get soggy if you step in a splash of water on the kitchen floor. They also help to stop your socks wearing through as quickly (in my experience).

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/12/2023 23:32

OP don't knock em until your tried them 😄

TheUsualChaos · 13/12/2023 23:32

Do you wash all your shoes then OP?

What a bizarre thread 😆

Kikibee · 13/12/2023 23:32

My socks last longer if they are protected by slippers, unslippered I find that socks get holes in rather quickly. There is also the case that we have tiled floors that are cold and it’s muddy outside, I don’t want to walk mud through the house. All shoes are removed in the hallway and slippers put on, always have done and I imagine I always will. I take my slippers with me when I visit others, I like wearing them inside

You can absolutely wash wool and fleece slippers, I use woolite and the 20°C wash cycle, they come out perfectly fine.
Shoes and boots for outside are designed to be more weather proof than warm so that's why I change out of my shoes in to slippers at home.
I'm struggling to understand your difficulty comprehending this.

Simple solutions:

  • don’t buy sheepskin ones
  • buy washable ones
  • or just buy new slippers periodically

OP you’re coming across as faux naive & privileged, asking why people might wear slippers during a cold December in a cost of living crisis 😒. Bully for you that you’ve a toasty warm home - how nice for you!

Honeyroar · 13/12/2023 23:33

Our house is 300 years old. The floors are wooden on concrete on top of the ground. They’re cold. And we have dogs, so there’s hair aroundZ. Feet in socks get cold and dirty. Slippers are comfy, warm and practical. Lighter and more comfortable than shoes.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 13/12/2023 23:33

I have Birkenstock clogs as skippers. In winter shearling lined ones, in warmer weather suede or leather ones. I have PF so my feet hurt if I go barefoot, and we have hard floors which are cold/slippy just in socks. I also have an ancient pair of Ugg boots I wear indoors if it is really freezing cold (Scotland).

Because it's not warm enough and my feet are like ice blocks within 5 minutes of just being in socks?

NotExactlySuits · 13/12/2023 23:34

Weird, weird OP.

No matter how warm my house was I'd never choose to walk around in my socks or barefoot. It's not comfortable, I don't want to step on anything, it's slippery. And I don't want outdoor shoes traipsed all over my house.

There's really nothing to understand.

Do you wash your shoes every time you wear them? I can’t see the difference between wearing socks and slippers and sock and shoes? Don’t you wash your socks?!!

RampantIvy · 13/12/2023 23:30

No they aren't. Slippers are warm and much more comfortable than shoes. We have a mixture of hard floors and carpets. Thin socks on hard floors just aren't warm enough for most people.

I'm surprised you don't know that TBH.

What a silly OP.

Well “surprise’ it’s fine for me, my friends , my kids, my kids friends….none of us wear slippers.

I’m just asking why people do given so many don’t.

Notthatcatagain · 13/12/2023 23:36

My slippers are not grim at all, they go through the washing machine regularly

Well done OP on being privileged enough to have a warm toasty home in December in a cost of living crisis. Clever you. Not like those weirdos who have to wear yucky slippers.

cristokitty · 13/12/2023 23:37

I don't need slippers upstairs but my hallway and kitchen floors are stone and the dining room is wood. They're cold. I don't need slippers in the living room or upstairs which are carpeted.

RampantIvy · 13/12/2023 23:37

I don't know anyone who doesn't wear slippers indoors.

SkaneTos · 13/12/2023 23:38

I can absolutely not wear my outdoor shoes/boots indoors - there's snow and dirt on them! Where I live we have a snowy winter.

My floors are cold.

Therefore I wear slippers. To keep my feet warm.

Moveoverdarlin · 13/12/2023 23:39

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t own slippers.

NeonSoda · 13/12/2023 23:39

I have high arches, PF, and have lived in lots of draughty houses, and keep my thermostat at 15.

I don’t understand slippers either.

Helendegenerate · 13/12/2023 23:39

To all the above replies in favour of them , yes I agree but also if only wearing socks or tights indoors the soles of said hosiery get all clicked and pick up dust and bits and pet hairs so there's another reason to get those slippers on.

Slippers are a vital part of choosing Xmas gifts too. Let's not forget that! 😋
I currently own several pairs including two bootie types which keep the ankles warm.

Not for me they aren't. My feet get cold. Inside in winter I wear normal socks, thick wool socks over the top and slippers.

Im the same. We’ve got tiles in the kitchen and it’s quite slippery only with socks.

And of course I’m taking shoes off. - it’s dirty outside, I don’t want to bring it inside
I don’t wear slippers for ages and wash them regularly in my washing machine, so they are not grim.

TomatoSandwiches · 13/12/2023 23:40

Where do you live op?
