Explain slippers to me

Genuinely don’t get slippers and thought Christmas might be a good time to ask.

So you’re in the house, taken off your shoes or boots and you have tights or socks. It’s inside so tights and socks are warm enough. When you want to go outside you slip on crocs, plimsolls whatever.

I don’t get slippers. Why do you need shoes indoors?

What's going on in the world where people don't know that slippers keep your feet warm and (on another thread) they don't know that if you are cold you should put on a/another jumper, or a coat if you are going outside in very cold weather?

There's a puzzling lack of common sense.

Sequinne · 14/12/2023 15:52

We live in a Victorian house with tiled floors in the hallway & kitchen, wood floors in dining room - it’s freezing! Even with socks on it’s uncomfortably cold to walk on.

I don’t wear outside shoes in the house, they come off as soon as we come in, then the slippers come on.

Socks just don’t feel right and I’d only wear them once before I’d need to wash them. With my slippers, I can get away with wearing longer before they need a wash.
Flip flops are for the beach.

Because I dont wear tights or socks.

Noooooo! Flip-flops are for everything! (I may or may not have walked up a mountain in mine...)

redlavender · 14/12/2023 16:07

Op, how warm do you heat your house and do you have underfloor heating??

Singleandproud · 14/12/2023 16:15

Along with keeping your feet warm it's safer to cook in them should you drop something hot such as a pan of hot water or a knife.

It also helps those that are chronically clumsy like me kicking my toes on door frames, tables etc

MerelyPlaying · 14/12/2023 18:56

All the reasons above, plus cats.

If you've ever trodden in a pile of cat sick ... or worse, a dead mouse cunningly placed where it's not immediately visible, you'd understand slippers.

Giesswein, totally washable. Thankfully.

I agree, I hate slippers, they are stinky.

Only if you have stinky feet. Are your shoes stinky @Chewbecca?

I don’t have stinky feet, but my mother washed them repeatedly after insisting I wear them full time in the house and after about two years they started to smell like wet dogs after being in the washing machine. Very cosy and warm but I sadly accidentally burned them on a wood burning stove (don’t even ask, it’s a long story).

ChilledToTheBone · 14/12/2023 19:37

I have a fear of stubbing a toe. So wear slippers. Also with wooden floors and a drafty house its not warm enough in just socks. We don't wear shoes indoors

Pickingmyselfup · 14/12/2023 20:00

They just make your feet so much cosier! I have hard floors downstairs so barefoot my feet are freezing and not much better in socks, plus most of the time I take my socks off and just wear my slippers. Right now I'm wearing socks and slippers, fleece leggings and a fleece jumper and I'm toasty. Heating is off although it has been on so the house isn't freezing.

My slippers are washable, I don't wash them often but occasionally. I'm not at all bothered about the cleanliness of my feet, they are clean enough, I'm not eating with them, nobody is sucking my toes so they don't need to squeaky clean.

Alighttouchonthetiller · 14/12/2023 11:06

Bit worried about you, OP, if you need slippers explaining to you. What next? 'I am very confused by cardigans and have no idea how they work. Can someone help?' Or perhaps 'Can someone explain cups to me?'

I am not a moron. Its a bit like looking at women wearing housecoats or headscarves. they would have given you reasons like protecting your clothes or hair but 50 years on nobody feels the need to wear them

i just wanted to know why slipper wearers feel the need to wear slippers. Most houses aren't really cold in the way old homes that had no central heating were. Most floors are smooth these days.
It genuinely seems odd to me that people want to wear things on their feet all day especially inside. Sometimes my feet will be cold but I don't really care or even think about it. Its only ever a few hours and then I'm either putting shoes on to go out or going to bed.

I suggest you buy a cheap pair and conduct yourself a little experiment then @Namenumber3 and see which you prefer

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 14/12/2023 22:31

Love a housecoat or apron! As for headscarves - hell yes, no need to do my hair and perfect for diy and cleaning.

@Namenumber3 you are wierd being happy to have cold feet for a couple of HOURS. … get some slippers love before you get chilblains.

BinkyBeaufort · 14/12/2023 22:58

I'm totally with you OP, can't stand the things.
On another thread I've posted how MiL has bought me about 3 pairs of slippers over the years, and each time I've thanked her, told her I don't get on with them and is it ok if I exchange them.
Received my Christmas present from her last week, and the label says "I know you don't like slippers but....." So back to the shops after Christmas to exchange them again.

But you can’t wash sheepskin,/ wool slippers. And people have been wearing the same sweaty pair of slippers for years. Slippers are GRIM! Just more socks surely if you’re feet are cold. There’s thick thermal ones, warm and you can wash when needed.

Stop being so rude. Who are you to tell people what they should or shouldn't wear?!

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 14/12/2023 23:15

@Namenumber3 you didn't just ask a question tho? When people gave you their reasons you proceeded to rubbish them all.

momsybear · 14/12/2023 23:19

For people (•like me) who enjoy putting on jammies a few hours before bed! I'm permanently overheated but socks or hosiery don't keep my toes warm enough

I recently machine washed my sheepskin house boots from Celtic.

I’ve had them for several years and have washed them every year.

LaurieStrode · 15/12/2023 00:51

I wash my slippers weekly; several pairs. They aren't grim.

Catsmere · 15/12/2023 02:17

@Namenumber3 why the hell do you think slippers are sweaty and horrible when by your own admission you don't know anyone who wears them? Would it come to a shock to you to learn that a) people wash their feet and b) wear socks under slippers? Do you assume shoes are horrible? They can't be washed, apart from trainers.

I have to help my diabetic mother with her socks and slippers, which she wears more than shoes. I can assure you there's no stench.

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 15/12/2023 02:53

I have carpet in most rooms, vinyl in the kitchen and bathroom, and still wear slippers (actually short Uggs) as my feet still feel cold in socks/tights. I'm even putting them on when I get up in the mornings now - and it's summer here!

I don't quite understand why slippers need "explaining"???

Why would you have cold feet for "only a few hours" when you could just put slippers on and have warm feet?

I can't stand having cold feet. As long as my feet and nipples are warm I'm ok. Ifc they get cold then I struggle to warm up. And it's miserable.

Lifestooshort71 · 15/12/2023 06:58

I take off my socks as soon as I get in and wiggle my toes. Then I slip on my Next slippers (new every winter and machine-washed most months) and my toasty toes are protected from corners of doors and I can wander in and out of carpeted and tiled rooms in comfort. If it's really cold (yup, op, some people are conscious of their heating bills), then I'll keep socks on as well but that impedes the wiggling. You asked a question, got an assortment of replies and then rubbished those that disagreed with you. Think I'm a classier act even in my slippers.

Catsmere · 15/12/2023 09:34

Nicely said, @Lifestooshort71!

Because we are all wonderfully unique and have different needs, wants and ideals. We all require different things to experience a certain level of happiness.

I don't feel the need to post on MN to ask people to explain their need for comfort and warmth....other do 🤷🏻‍♀️
