Explain slippers to me

Genuinely don’t get slippers and thought Christmas might be a good time to ask.

So you’re in the house, taken off your shoes or boots and you have tights or socks. It’s inside so tights and socks are warm enough. When you want to go outside you slip on crocs, plimsolls whatever.

I don’t get slippers. Why do you need shoes indoors?

Shoes off at door as I don't want to walk dirt into my house. Slippers because I have either tiled/ wooden floors downstairs and it can be hard and slippy with just socks.

TheChosenTwo · 14/12/2023 09:13

I don’t wear slippers either op, nor does anyone I know other than MIL.
We have hard floors downstairs,
carpet everywhere else. Underfloor heating though so it’s not cold.
I would trip over in slippers, all of them look far bulkier than my feet! I’ve never once slipped over on our wooden or tiled floors, never stubbed my toe, if the floor gets wet it gets dried. No furry pets either.
I can see why others wear them if they get really cold feet, I’m okay with socks on. I’m also up and down the stairs all day and feel like because I’m not used to wearing slippers I’d end up going arse over tit in them 😂

Mumtime2 · 14/12/2023 09:15

I would never wear footwear in my house.
We have always had slippers since I was a child.
Our climate is colder, so slippers with bare feet.
I am clumpsy, so I prefer my feet in slippers.
Soft wool and light footwear are ideal after a day on my feet. My slippers were a gift that I love.
Also my feet are ugly!
Socks, I take off as soon as I am home, I prefer to wear only when I go out in my shoes.

I have raynauds. If I don’t wear slippers, my feet are purple.

queenMab99 · 14/12/2023 09:40

Lots of people have explained politely, why they wear slippers, what are you going to object to us wearing next? Are knickers allowed? Why are you trying to interfere with our freedom to wear what we like, in our own homes. Mind your own business!

Goatymum · 14/12/2023 09:41

I love slippers but usually only wear in winter as my feet get cold.

Carsarelife · 13/12/2023 23:18

Tights or socks can be slippy on wooden flooring so slippers with hard bottoms work

This.
I used to wear thick socks mainly. But I have worn slippers indoors over the past year and I prefer them in terms of grip and warmth on wooden floors. I have woollen felt clogs with a sturdy sole.

biter · 14/12/2023 09:43

Because outdoor shoes are filthy and covered in traces of dog shit and all manner of disgustingness which I don't want to traipse into my house.

Slippers are comfy., warm and save my socks from getting all manky.

Wink

I don’t object.
People are saying my post is stupid because it’s obvious why people wear slippers. As a non slipper wearer I don’t get it and asked what they get out if them.

You mind your own business. It’s my thread .

Are you really claiming you hadn't realised some people feel the cold differently to you? Have you never noticed people wear different numbers ans types of layers in all weathers?

CMOTDibbler · 14/12/2023 09:56

I find even thick socks quite cold, so apart from the summer where I do prefer nothing on my feet, I wear what I refer to as slippers. But actually they are knock off Ugg boots which I only wear in the house (with socks) as I don't like slip on slippers and prefer the foot support of my ankle boots

anythinginapinch · 14/12/2023 10:12

I've never worn slippers. Vile things FOR ME. Fair enough for others.

But all these people saying ooh my hard floors are cold/hard in winter ... yes, they are, and that's what CARPETS were invented to minimise.

The trend for fake wood flooring which has taken over the nation must have been sponsored by the slipper manufacturers

DappledThings · 14/12/2023 10:24

Carpets don't warm the air. I have carpets. I'm in a room with carpet now. The air is still chilly, my feet would be cold without the extra layer all around them

DragonflyLady · 14/12/2023 10:30

Love my slippers. Toastier than socks!

Anotheranonymousname · 14/12/2023 10:50

I'm mid-40s and live in a Victorian terrace that is chilly at this time of year but brilliantly cool in the summer. I wear slippers (with socks) in the house because I like the feel of the extra layer, they help to keep my feet a bit warmer and my socks to last longer. I am another person who will take slippers with me when going to a friend's house of a similar style.

My teenaged DCs often wear slippers too, one for the cosy factor and the other because they like to have something on their feet.

I didn’t know slippers were even about keeping your feet warm though.
I thought people wore slippers because they are softer than hard floors.

Do you see how people doing things differently actually works?

I’m a non bloody slipper wearer and because everyone is buying them for Christmas I asked the question. Now I know most people wear them for warmth. So thanks those that answered the question.

Because they’re warm, warmer than socks and I don’t like walking on a hard floor without padding under my feet. (We have carpet in some rooms but not all).

This. I can't walk for too long on hard floors nor barefoot. I need some sort of heel or I get foot pain.

MeinKraft · 14/12/2023 10:54

I hate having warm feet. And restricted feet. No slippers here! I even go outside in my bare feet in winter and end up with chilblains.

DelphiniumBlue · 14/12/2023 10:54

Our kitchen floor is cold and hard ( quarry tiles) so socks are not enough in winter. I do also wear Crocs but with bare feet they are uncomfortable, whereas my slippers re nice and cosy.

blankittyblank · 14/12/2023 11:01

I LOVE slippers! They're so cosy and warm. You seemed confused about them being dirty/not washing them. I don't wash mine, but I only ever wear mine with socks. I never wash my shoes. Am I supposed to wash them? Didn't even occur to me.

RampantIvy · 14/12/2023 11:02

Seriously Shock
Have you no common sense?

Alighttouchonthetiller · 14/12/2023 11:06

Bit worried about you, OP, if you need slippers explaining to you. What next? 'I am very confused by cardigans and have no idea how they work. Can someone help?' Or perhaps 'Can someone explain cups to me?'

Alargeoneplease89 · 14/12/2023 11:10

People wear them for warmth, comfort, not slipping.

No one wants to wear outside shoes inside, that's gross. You can wash most slippers and people wear socks with slippers so no sure why you think its grim?

Catsmere · 14/12/2023 11:30

The word is "rigid" and who has so little imagination that they can't comprehend why people wear slippers? Of course you're going to get judged or simply mocked for asking about the bleeding obvious.
