Which is why I didn’t specifically blame the government for his suicide Janiie. It’ll be far more complex than that. But the conditions people are kept in on that boat will lead to mental health and other issues and was one of the things charities were warning about at the start.

Totally agree with this. Having been involved supporting suicidal people for ten years in the past, current circumstances can quite obviously tip a person over the edge. Yes, MH issues are complex but it only takes one small act or word from someone to make life at that moment unliveable. And believe me, not all those who take their life have 'complex mental health issues'.

I'm sorry to hear about the person close to you.

Also spent majority of my working life working for a homeless/MH charity
absolutely agree that it really does only take a very small moment in time for a person to be tipped over the edge I’m also very very sorry for anyone who has lost anyone close to them, it’s shattering for all & casts a long shadow of grief.

Drakeford has resigned.

A doctor - don't we have shortages of doctors? Isn't he the type of person this government should be interested in giving a visa to, in their choice of who deserves entry?

Exactly this. It’s such straightforward common sense.

DuncinToffee · 13/12/2023 11:31

@Janiie

Michael Essouma is named as the young man who ended his life on the #BibbyStockholm today. A doctor from the Cameroon with over 32 peer reviewed clinical research articles, something dreadful drove this talented young man to seek a safe haven in the UK, sadly to be let down.

Drakeford has resigned.

I’m sad about that. He always said he would stand down before the next Senedd elections. I always think of him as a person of great integrity.

He’s 69 and recently widowed. He deserves a bit of rest, poor man.

BestIsWest · 13/12/2023 11:48

Yes of course he does.

He's brought in the recent unpopular 20mph, not everything he's introduced has been popular though. I can't believe that most A roads in Swansea are 20mph but considering the state of them going any faster will bugger your car up even more.

Roussette · 13/12/2023 12:50

It sounds like the roads round here! One wag did fill one of our potholes with earth and plant polyanthus!
And don't talk to me about broken street lights! Reported twice. I had to escort two 80 something neighbours back home the other day. Pitch black, wet leaves, awful.

Wes Streeting on Politics Live. He's good.

DuncinToffee · 13/12/2023 14:10

The man who died on the Bibby Stockholm was wrongly identified.

Not that it changes the tragic circumstances

OP posts:
BIossomtoes · 13/12/2023 14:14

It’s still a tragedy and now we know there’s a doctor on there whose skills are going to waste when he could be working. What a bloody mess this is.

'And that’s on top of the questions about how we’ve made conditions so bad for asylum seekers that we are breaking their mental health even if it wasn’t broken before.'

Bad? They are all housed and fed, rightly so. I'd guess treated far better than the war torn countries some are fleeing. They are treated far better than our own homeless people are. No doubt whataboutery and I'm sorry for the man who took his own life yesterday but you do know suicide is the biggesr killer of men under 40 in the UK? Sympathies for this poor man and his family but let's have some perspective.

They’re housed and fed? Great, so we’ve not abandoned that particular standard of human right then. Yet.

No doubt whataboutery and I'm sorry for the man who took his own life yesterday but you do know suicide is the biggesr killer of men under 40 in the UK?

yes, you’re right, it is whataboutery. It’s a statistic that should be shocking and not delivered with a shrug in a dismissive fashion.

The bottom line is... we can feel bad about more than one thing at once. Male suicide is a shocker, and yes more needs to be done about it.. whether that's help with MH crises or understanding it more, raising awareness and removing the stigma.

And we can feel bad for those people herded onto an industrial barge with no idea when their claims will be processed because the Government are using them as a political tool to whip up hate or because they think it is a vote winner

Cornettoninja · 13/12/2023 14:28

Well put @Roussette, you’re right.

BIossomtoes · 13/12/2023 15:32

Couldn’t be more right @Roussette.

Piggywaspushed · 13/12/2023 15:57

Just to correct the record : more women attempt to take their own life than men.

DuncinToffee · 13/12/2023 16:20

Maybe @Janiie would like to read this article

https://bylinetimes.com/2023/12/13/asylum-waiting-lists-rocket-by-236-as-migrant-housed-on-cramped-barge-takes-own-life/

Migration experts say the uncertainty asylum claimants feel about the future, and the indefinite waiting time for a decision, cause intense feelings of psychological distress, which can lead to suicide.

Added to that are issues around the quality of accommodation, such as the cramped conditions aboard Bibby Stockholm, which has the capacity to house around 500 people in little over 200 rooms smaller than a parking space, described by one MP as a “quasi-prison”.

Asylum Waiting Lists Rocket by 236% as Migrant Housed on Cramped Barge Takes Own Life – Byline Times

A day after the suicide of a man aboard the Bibby Stockholm exclusive data obtained by this newspaper shows migrants waiting three years or more for a decision on their future has more than trebled in the past year

Jesus.
You came onto the thread especially to say that? That's horrific.

AdamRyan · 13/12/2023 17:24

Interesting too that when I try to dicuss feminist issues I often get told I should care more about male suicide and it should be a priority. I wonder why this one has caused you to be so dismissive of the problem?
