The poorest are about to get poorer too as a lot of the financial help for the CoL crisis stops. Which is going to make it very difficult for them to campaign on how much better the economy is doing and how people are better off.

Johnny Mercer now doubling down and calling Vorderman a 'creature' is going well...

Ooof.

Government by X. Marvellous. Hmm
But also, by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned. so that’s good.

If you have to resort to name calling....

integrity latest. Government has quietly deleted a damning report on Bibby Stockholm from its website.

Cates' tweet got community noted, saying it is not a manifesto commitment, merely an option under discussion.

Liz Truss has got her honours list, 11 names

Vote Leave stooges have done very nicely out of Truss - Matthew Elliot & Jon Moynihan.

Piggywaspushed · 30/12/2023 07:19

It's despicable really although her award for Shirley Conran seems deserved.

LlynTegid · 30/12/2023 07:36

I am all for honouring people such as charity fundraisers, but would not allow any political honours at all.

Notonthestairs · 30/12/2023 09:15

Agreed Conran is very deserving.
But she was the only non political person. Did Truss' 'business advisor' really deserve their honour?
Nope, it's donors, aides, friends (and grifters).

I am generally a bit of a stick in the mud but it's time we adjusted the system. As Llyn says limit it to those that contribute to society, not political parties.

BIossomtoes · 30/12/2023 09:38

On the bright side Jilly Cooper is now a dame.

Yes that was nice news. She's going to have quite a year in 2024 with the Disney adaptation. Pretty extraordinary at 86 years old.

Piggywaspushed · 30/12/2023 09:58

Hmm, I don't know, I think some politicians do amazing work highlighting some causes and issues and I guess some 'non political' charities and causes can be pretty dodgy.

I liked the guy who got an MBE for talking down suicides at a train station. They reckon he has saved 29 lives.

Notonthestairs · 30/12/2023 10:04

Well if we could exclude lobbyists from think tanks (that won't explain who funds them) from peerages that would be a start.

And Tony Hudgell, who has life changing injuries caused by his birth parents. Only 9 and what an amazing young person he is already.

There’s an awful lot of good, decent people in this list. Truss’s meaningless backhanders to meaningless people fade into the background when you start to look at the wider cohort.

Notonthestairs · 30/12/2023 10:58

Peerages and those that gain the opportunity to shape legislation & direction of the country is a bit different I think.

Muddling the NY honours with Truss' list of political grifters is of course what Sunak wanted, hence releasing both lists simultaneously.

DuncinToffee · 30/12/2023 11:05

Elliott, chief executive of Vote Leave and who founded Conservative Friends of Russia, now sits in the HoL writing our laws.

Sunak approved his peerage

Roussette · 30/12/2023 11:12

Surely the HoL must be absolutely rammed now, given the number of PMs the Tories have got through.
Truss's is beyond awful, how someone who decimated the economy and was in post for less than the life a lettuce, got to nominate, god alone knows.

The HoL can do a lot of good but this shitshow of a Government spoilt that with their news moguls, donors, Russian KGB connections and a daughter/love interest.
Pathetic.

DuncinToffee · 30/12/2023 11:18

It's no coincidence that this list got quietly released with the NY Honours

OP posts:
Notonthestairs · 30/12/2023 11:34

"a daughter/love interest."

That very fact that nobody knows (or is willing to say publicly) why Owen is in the HoL shows the scale of the problem.

But Not there's a super injunction out on reporting of this.

So obviously it's one of my choices!

Notonthestairs · 30/12/2023 11:58

Is there a super injunction?
How do we know?

I'm semi joking (largely infuriated).

Roussette · 30/12/2023 12:04

It's reported everywhere as so... who knows if it's just gossip or true. But, and it's a big BUT, the media are not reporting on the appointment, so nothing would suprise me.

newnamethanks · 30/12/2023 12:23

There has to be an injunction. Anything less would see her hounded from pillar to post for, at least, an explanation as to why the taxpayer has been handed the bill for Lady X for the rest of her life. I thought state subsidies were unacceptable for the Tory Loons? Hope she's not claiming housing benefit too.
