I assumed it was mostly men there
I hope this story grows some legs as it's being down played a bit on the news at the moment just saying ' his apologized '

Piggywaspushed · 24/12/2023 08:15

The lack of speechmarks around joke on BBC reporting ahs annoyed me. I also see no text of this 'apology'.

IClaudine · 24/12/2023 08:26

The BBC just said "alleged" remarks. WTF. He has already admitted it!

Saucery · 24/12/2023 08:30

Unfortunately, this sort of Bernard Manning shite ‘humour’ is still alive and well in some sections of society. Oh, but they don’t mean it. Their wife actually wears the trousers in the marriage and everything, everyone knows it’s just banter, what’s wrong with you, can’t you take a joke, jeez.

Saucery · 24/12/2023 08:30

Edited to remove duplicate post.

Notonthestairs · 24/12/2023 08:47

I just dont get it.

Why after announcing a much needed crack down on spiking drinks would you make those comments - to a group of women - about spiking your wife's drinks? Why would anyone think that was a sensible response?

Yes, as Saucery says, it will be passed off as people being unable to cope with bantz. And no doubt Cleverly's wife will say she thought it was hilarious etc etc.

But fucks sakes - its not hard to avoid this situation. Just don't make jokes about drugging women - any woman.

the80sweregreat · 24/12/2023 08:48

Sky news earlier on said he had 'apologized '
So that's ok then
🙄

cakeorwine · 24/12/2023 09:16

"Banterm,innit"

I wonder what his female Cabinet colleagues think?
The ones who are anti woke and think people can't say anything nowadays!

the80sweregreat · 24/12/2023 09:17

I feel sorry for his wife married to such a nasty vile Individual, he clearly doesn't think too much of her.

A group of political journalists as well.
I wonder if they were expected to laugh at his "humour"

Roussette · 24/12/2023 09:32

It is a joke Jim Davidson (that ancient mysogonistic bigoted racist) would crack.

If James UnCleverly wants to be aligned with him, that's all we need to know...

Currently a thread in feminism (chat) on this. 11 posts in and not turned in the way expected yet. But quiet.

I am guessing his wife is , at best, mortified and more likely furious.

I honestly do not believe a Labour or LibDem prominent front bencher would survive this.

I just read your excellent post on there

Mine?

I am not remotely surprised and fully expect Mr Antonym to go about his business undisturbed by this. Typical of many men in his party, whose contempt for women is writ large in their everyday speech and behaviour. I expect that's because they all know what a woman is. For.

RafaistheKingofClay · 24/12/2023 10:21

It’s all fine. It’s just a little bit of rohypnol to stop the wife nagging him… possibly. It’s very unfair for people to be making an issue out of this.

More seriously… I know I’ve said this before but what the fuck is wrong with male Tory MPs and the Tory party. In any other government he won’t have a job this afternoon.

I just find it so very frustrating. THIS is what feminist Mumsnet and sites devoted to women should be shouting about from the rooftops. This deep rooted, harmful and disturbing misogyny is more widespread , more invidious, and extremely harmful.

I am cheered that there is a thread on it but it should be a major talking point of this site.

pointythings · 24/12/2023 10:55

@Piggywaspushed the apologists have come out on the thread now. It's appalling. Some are classic posters with a track record of Tory fangirling.

Piggywaspushed · 24/12/2023 10:56

Ah, OK. Is it trending then? That is what attracts them.

DuncinToffee · 24/12/2023 11:10

It's not really trending, I am guessing certain posters would like to silence the threads

OP posts:
DuncinToffee · 24/12/2023 11:24

It's just depressing the justifications people post, it was the same with the world cup 'kiss'

Piggywaspushed · 24/12/2023 11:28

The only real defence of him I can find is a woman on telly this morning (Dawn Neesom?) who was editor of The Star, who claims it was a joke about nagging. Even she had to add words to the joke to make it not about rape.

IClaudine · 24/12/2023 11:45

Lammy on LBC just referred to him as "poor old James". I had a good shout at the radio.

Did he? Ironically, I presume??
