Who paid? We know he doesn't know how to pay for things like petrol, does he know how chip and pin works?

The camera man?

Ooh I wonder, do you think Sunak has a prime minister's photographer like Johnson did?

IClaudine · 23/12/2023 22:32

That is deeply creepy. Yuk.

jgw1 · 23/12/2023 22:32

Is that what they mean when they say they know what a woman is.

BIossomtoes · 23/12/2023 22:45

WTAF? And someone as deeply misogynist as that holds high public office? At least Mrs Cleverly is now in no doubt about where he considers her place to be.

DuncinToffee · 23/12/2023 22:45

Women's Aid

"We rely on political leaders to take action to end violence against women and girls, and the misogyny that underpins it. It is vital that spiking survivors see ministers treating the subject seriously and not downplaying the reality so many women face."

This would be career ending for him in any other government.

Yes it would. They’re so fucking arrogant, they think they can do and say whatever they like and just get away with it. I can’t wait to see these bastards lose their seats.

jgw1 · 23/12/2023 23:02

Remember the contortions some went to, to say that it is ok to break the law for a short period of time.
Didn't think to use date rape drugs as an example of a law it was acceptable to do a little bit of. Can't think why not.

IClaudine · 23/12/2023 23:04

So if I go out tomorrow and do a little bit of last minute Christmas shoplifting, I'll be OK?

IClaudine · 23/12/2023 23:05

Sadly, Braintree (Cleverly's constituency) is likely to be a Conservative hold.

As long as its in a specific and limited way, then I reckon you will be fine.

He's working on it changing.

I don’t really care, to be honest. Watching his acute discomfort on the opposition benches would last longer than the transient pleasure of seeing him lose his seat.

Zonder · 24/12/2023 00:49

Even for the current incarnation of the Tories this is pretty grim.

the80sweregreat · 24/12/2023 07:25

James ( not so )cleverly should just go.
I hope his wife divorces him too
Advocating date rape, just vile

Piggywaspushed · 24/12/2023 07:33

Currently a thread in feminism (chat) on this. 11 posts in and not turned in the way expected yet. But quiet.

I am guessing his wife is , at best, mortified and more likely furious.

I honestly do not believe a Labour or LibDem prominent front bencher would survive this.

Piggywaspushed · 24/12/2023 07:41

I am actually glad the exact wording has come out, otherwise there would be a lot of wriggling and whataboutery.

I wonder if any of the people who were regaled with his wit called him out on it?

Roussette · 24/12/2023 07:44

What I don't understand is....who would find this funny? Who does HE actually think would find it funny? I can't think of a single person, young or old, that I know that would.

This was at a Tory do, does this mean they're all like him and think date rape is a laugh?
If so, we've got more of a problem than I thought...

Zonder · 24/12/2023 07:50

The fact that he felt comfortable saying it suggests he knows he has cronies around him who would find it funny. That's pretty worrying.

Piggywaspushed · 24/12/2023 08:00

It was said to women. One of them at least didn't like it enough to tell The Daily Mirror, it seems.

The only defences I have found so far is it was 'private' (not sure that works ) and 'clearly intended to be ironic'.

the80sweregreat · 24/12/2023 08:02

At least he knows what a woman is, one to be date raped apparently
I wonder how many laughed like a drain at his ' jokes '? I'd like to think one or two might have walked out. Seems unlikely

Zonder · 24/12/2023 08:03

Saying it to a group of women is even worse. I still think he is comfortable with the idea that that kind of comment is fine in his usual work culture.
